SJP and The "Intifada"

“Intifada” = Violent Uprising

Since the 1980’s, the Arabic term “Intifada” has borne the connotation of violence and violent Palestinian uprising in Israel.

Israel experienced the First Intifada from 1987-1993 and the Second Intifada from 2000-2005. The so-called Knife Intifada took place from 2015-2016.

The violence that took place during these periods of uprising took the form of rock-throwings, stabbings, shootings, car-rammings and bombings of civilian targets.

Such attacks were often orchestrated by terror organizations, in particular by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and Hamas

Students across North America who seek a space to show their support for “Intifada” find their outlet in the notorious hate-group Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP).

The violence that entails “Intifada” is terrorism. Nevertheless, declaring support for “Intifada” is acceptable speech amongst SJP and its activists.

54 SJP activists, officers and affiliates who have all expressed support for “Intifada” are listed below.

SJP Chapters Encourage “Intifada”: SJP chapters regularly post their endorsement of “Intifada” on their official social media pages. Their members often chant pro-“Intifada” slogans at their events, demonstrations and disruptive activities.

A selection of 10 SJP chapters that have encouraged support for “Intifada” are listed below.

Radical Founder Calls for “Intifada” in the United States:

Hatem Bazian: SJP Founder's Support for "Intifada"

Hatem Bazian

SJP founder, UC Berkeley professor, Hatem Bazian, openly expressed his support for “intifada” in 2004 and showed tacit support for “intifada” all the way back in the 1980’s.

As a graduate student at San Francisco State University (SFSU) in the 1980’s, Bazian rose to become president of the General Union of Palestine Students (GUPS) chapter at SFSU. Perhaps his most notable achievement as GUPS president was his rejection of an invitation to forge a "peace treaty" during the First Intifada with SFSU's Jewish Student Action Committee.

It was at an April 2004 San Francisco rally in support of the
Iraqi insurgency, that Bazian’s made his true position public. At the rally, Bazian called for an “intifada” in the United States:

Bazian
asked the crowd:

“Are you angry? Are you angry? Are you angry? Well, we've been watching intifada in Palestine, we've been watching an uprising in Iraq, and the question is that what are we doing? How come we don't have an intifada in this country [USA]?

He continued:

it's about time that we have an intifada in this country [USA] that change[s] fundamentally the political dynamics in here. And we know...they're gonna say it’s some Palestinian being too radical, well you haven't seen radicalism yet!”

Bazian has never publicly condemned any acts of terror committed against Israelis. He has however attempted to justify attacks during waves of violence and defended the perpetrators of terrorism.

On October 27, 2013, Bazian
tweeted a call to free terrorist mastermind Marwan Barghouti, whom he labelled “Palestine’s Mandela.” Barghouti, who is currently serving five life sentences for terrorism in an Israeli prison, headed the Palestinian Authority’s terrorist Tanzim force and founded the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades. Barghouti’s organizations carried out a large number of deadly attacks, killing and wounding scores of Israelis during the Second Intifada.

On October 21, 2015, during an upsurge in violence across Israel known as the “Knife Intifada,” Bazian tweeted an article that justified the increase in terror attacks on Israelis. The article, titled the “The 100-year Intifada,” also implied that Palestinians have both a moral and historical duty to carry out violent uprisings against Israel.

After a 13-year-old Israeli girl, Hallel Ariel, was stabbed to death in her bed by a Palestinian terrorist on June 30, 2016, Bazian tweeted an article blaming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s policies for the crime.

With a founder such as Bazian, it is no wonder that SJP have shown so much support for “Intifada.”
