Students Against Israeli Apartheid

Students Against Israeli Apartheid (SAIA) is an alternative name for Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP).

Active SAIA chapters currently exist on at least seven North American campuses, including: Carleton University (Carleton), York University (York), University of Toronto at St. George (UofT St. George), University of Toronto at Mississauga (UofT Mississauga), Dalhousie University (Dal), George Mason University (GMU) and University of Regina (UR).

The University of Manitoba Students Union voted to strip SAIA of official club status in 2013 under the terms of the Manitoba Human Rights Code. The motion noted that — due to SAIA activities — Jewish and Israeli SAIA students were “discriminated” against and subject to “harassment” for their affiliation with Zionism.

SAIA’s most notable chapters are SAIA GMU — which hosted the 2016 National SJP conference — and SAIA York. In 2015, GMU was reported to be one of the “ten worst anti-semitic campuses” in America, due to SAIA’s on-campus activities. In 2014, York suspended SAIA York’s charter for one year, due to the group’s repeated disruptions of academic activities.

Below is a summary of these two SAIA chapters’ activities.
