Lena Ibrahim

Overview

Lena Ibrahim has expressed supportfor violence and trivializedterrorism committed by Hamas. She has spread hatred of Israel on social media and disrupted pro-Israel events, on and off campus.

Ibrahim is reportedly a founder of a coalition of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) chapters in the Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia area, known collectively as DC MD VA Students for Justice in Palestine (dmvsjpal). The associated SJP chapters are at American University (AU), GMU, Georgetown University (GU), George Washington University (GWU) and the University of Maryland (UMaryland).

Ibrahim has been a member of the public Facebook group for Students Against Israeli Apartheid (SAIA) at George Mason University (GMU) since 2013. SAIA is an affiliate of SJP.

Ibrahim also protested with CODEPINK against the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).

Ibrahim is an activist with the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement. She is reportedly a member of the American Studies Association (ASA) Activism and Community Caucus, which passed a resolution promoting BDS at the 2013 ASA Conference.

Ibrahim is also reportedly a member of the US Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (USACBI) Organizing Collective.

In April 2018, Ibrahim’s Facebook page said she worked at The Jerusalem Fund and Palestine Center and was a 2017 graduate of GMU, where she studied Global Affairs and Middle Eastern Studies.

Support for Violence

On January 19, 2016, Ibrahim tweeted: “No peace w/o justice and by justice I mean right of return I mean Jerusalem I mean Haifa I mean Bisan I mean Akka I mean Safad I mean Yafa.”

The “right of return” is a Palestinian demand discredited as a means to eliminate Israel.

On October 28, 2015, Ibrahim tweeted: “lol at Arabs condemning idea of 3rd intifada- just like 1st and 2nd, Palestinians are not waiting for u to support Palestinian liberation.”

The term "Zio" is a common derogatory reference to Zionists, as well as an often-used anti-Semitic slur among white supremacists.

On October 16, 2015, Ibrahim tweeted a photo of Palestinians throwing rocks with text superimposed saying “Support our Troops.”

On October 10, 2015, Ibrahim shared a post on Facebook with the caption: “Christians and Muslims united in the fight against the illegal colonization of ‪#‎Palestine‬. ‪#‎ThirdIntifada.‬” The photo featured masked rioters holding rocks.

In October 2015, there was an upsurge in violence across Israel incited by Palestinian political and religious leaders. The wave of stabbings, known as the “Knife Intifada,” was characterized by young Palestinians throughout the country stabbing and attempting to stab Israeli civilians.

On October 7, 2015, Ibrahim wrote on Facebook: “May the Palestinian people resist, with every rock we hold on our unbeatable land, and may the world continue to grow in support and in awe of such spectacular freedom fighters.”

Trivializing Hamas Terrorism

On January 18, 2016, Ibrahim tweeted: “One of my classes has an entire part of the syllabus devoted to Israeli ‘defense’ against Hamas ‘terrorism’. LOL... I cannot wait for this.”

On August 24, 2014, during Israel’s Operation Protective Edge (OPE), Ibrahim tweeted: “If 100% of Israelis ignored 100% of the ‘Hamas’ rocket warning sirens,100% of Israelis would still be 100% ok. Meanwhile in Gaza? 2000+ dead.”

Israel commenced Operation Protective Edge (OPE) in July 2014, to stop rocket fire targeting Israeli civilians and to destroy Hamas attack tunnels.

On August 3, 2014, Ibrahim tweeted: “Other than ridiculous twitter cartoon ‘infographics’ why can't the Israeli military provide any evidence that Hamas uses ‘human shields’?”

On July 9, 2014, Ibrahim tweeted: “How many more ways can it be said? Israel bombs civilians/children in Gaza regardless of Hamas rockets. Israel acts with complete impunity.”

Spreading Hatred of Israel

On November 10, 2015, Ibrahim tweeted: “F**k Israel so gross how the IDF abuses Palestinian children...so so sick.”

On October 16, 2015, Ibrahim tweeted that “Zionists in the US are basically people who have enough room for extreme/ pointless nationalism in their racist souls for both Israel & US.”

On August 26, 2014, Ibrahim tweeted: “What was learned by ‘protective edge’ operation in #Gaza? Israel is blood thirsty for children-will murder in the thousands, world will watch”

On July 31, 2014, Ibrahim tweeted: “Liberal Zios who ‘feel awful’ about Gaza but still ‘believe in the Jewish state’.......you are the problem. Gaza slaughter = Jewish state.”

The term "Zio" is a common derogatory reference to Zionists, as well as an often-used anti-Semitic slur among white supremacists.

On August 25, 2013, Ibrahim posted to Facebook a photo of a sign in Haifa, a city in Israel, which read “go in peace” and commented: “Haifa was a Palestinian village ethnically cleansed in 1948 by Israeli terror forces.”

On April 7, 2013, Ibrahim tweeted: “#Holocaust...Never ever again. But Al Nakba,....when will that end? #Israel.”

The term “Nakba” is generally translated as “catastrophe” in Arabic, referring to the outcome of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It is a term often used to delegitimize the creation of the State of Israel by defining it as a catastrophe.

On March 20, 2013, Ibrahim tweeted: “Israel denies human rights on millions and millions of people because they are not Jewish....no democracy in ‘Jewish only’ sorry y'all.”

Disrupting Pro-Israel Events

On May 18, 2014, Ibrahim disrupted [00:00:14] an Israeli Independence Festival in Fairfax, Virginia with Tareq Radi and other SJP and SAIA members from Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia (DMV-SJP).

That day, Ibrahim posted a photo to Facebook of a pamphlet upon which was written, “What is the Nakba?” and commented: “We made fake ‘pro Israel’ pamphlets which we are passing out at the Israel street festival!”

Also on that day, Ibrahim tweeted: “We have four cars driving around this Israel festival with huge Israeli apartheid banners,” then tweeted: “We have 4 cars parked out side the Israel festival with HUGE banners that read ‘Israel is an APARTHEID STATE!!!”

On March 3, 2013, Ibrahim participated in an “Expose AIPAC” protest, organized by CODEPINK, in front of the Washington D.C. Convention Center where AIPAC held its 2013 policy conference.

At the protest, activists knelt [00:01:06] outside the Convention Center, with eyes masked, and read [00:01:45] the names of Palestinian political prisoners and hunger strikers as a show of honor to them.

BDS Activism

In November 2013, Ibrahim was an organizer of the 2013 ASA conference, during which the ASA passed a resolution that endorsed the academic boycott of Israel.

In November 2013, Ibrahim wrote a report about the 2013 ASA conference and noted: “We were talking about things like Israel’s various apartheid systems...and most emphasised- Israel’s academic institutes and their complicit role in the illegal occupation.”

She continued: “And that is, I believe, one of the strongest goals of Palestinian activism and BDS, to simply bring this kind of discussion to the places it has always been deliberately ignored.”

In 2014, Ibrahim reportedly presented a talk titled, “Students for Justice in Palestine: Awakening the U.S. Campus,” on a panel organized by USACBI at the 2014 ASA conference in Los Angeles, California.

On March 25, 2014, Ibrahim wrote on Facebook: “If you could look into my brain right now: ‘BDS BDS BDS DMV SJP DIVESTMENT YALA NOW HOW KEEF BDS ACADEMIC BOYCOTT SJP HISTORY MAKING YALA’”

On July 24, 2014, Ibrahim was a featured speaker [00:25:25] at a lecture titled “Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions: A New Path to Peace” hosted by the The Jerusalem Fund and Palestine Center in Washington, D.C.

At the lecture, Ibrahim said [00:32:07]: “Certainly BDS is not something we sit around and debate about, we instead work on it and agree that is...what we do as solidarity activists.”

Ibrahim went on to pledge that DMV SJP chapters would [00:32:57] “support the academic and cultural boycott as defined by the Palestinian Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI)" and would [00:33:12] “not normalize the status quo by engaging in dialogues, discussions, panels, or other public forums” in which participants do not agree to the BDS demands.

On August 26, 2014, Ibrahim tweeted: “The real work begins for us now- BDS EVERYWHERE- on every campus!!!!!!!! @BDSmovement.”

On June 15, 2015, Ibrahim tweeted a graphic with a list of companies selling Dates, saying: “Do notttttt buy Israeli dates!!!!!!!!!! #bds/”

Ibrahim indicated on Facebook that she “went” to an October 21, 2014 protest titled, “Protest Sabra: Stay Out of Georgetown, Stay Out of Gaza.”The event was hosted by the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights (USCPR).

Sabra is partially owned by an Israeli company, the Strauss Group.

On July 11, 2015, Ibrahim wrote on Facebook: “This week we celebrate 10 years of the BDS movement as we continue pushing forward globally in the fight for justice in Palestine. I am really so honored to know and learn from the professors organizing with the US academic and cultural boycott of Israel. You are the reason I believe so strongly in the power of academia and the resistance we can create from within it.”

Attending the 2016 National SJP Conference

Ibrahim indicated on Facebook that she “went" to the 2016 SJP National Conference hosted by SAIA at GMU in Fairfax, VA, on November 4-6, 2016.

SAIA - Supporting BDS

In March 2013, SAIA launched campaign to boycott Sabra Hummus at GMU. Sabra is partially owned by an Israeli company, the Strauss Group. SAIA member Keil Eggers organized a petition "[i]]n accordance with the call issued by Palestinian civil society" alleging that The Strauss Group was complicit in human right violations.

In August 2016, BDS leader Ilan Pappé admitted that BDS was not initiated by a “call” from Palestinian civil society; rather, it was initiated by a small number of radical anti-Israel extremists.

On April 25, 2013, GMU SAIA held a panel event featuring SAIA Advisor and GMU professor Craig Willse delivering a lecture on BDS.

On November 25, 2013, SAIA members participated in the American Studies Association (ASA) Conference, during which a resolution calling for an academic boycott of Israel was adopted.

GMU SAIA - Shutting Down Dialogue with Israelis

On November 5, 2013, SAIA staged a walkout to disrupt a talk given by Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Sgt. Benjamin Anthony at GMU about his personal experiences of the Israeli-Arab Conflict. The group also projected [00:00:48] the SAIA logo on the building used to host the event.

SAIA produced a video of the walkout with a description claiming: “The walkout was part of SAIA's anti-normalization strategy that seeks to expose normalizing events…”

Propanents of the “anti-normalization” policy seek to police all interactions between Israelis and Palestinians and shut down all conversations, interactions and speech that they perceive as being ideologically unaligned with their own agenda. Adherents to this position reject “liberal Zionist” groups who seek to dialogue with Palestinians, on the grounds that such interaction “normalizes” entrenched power dynamics.

GMU SAIA - Promoting A Graduation Day Walkout

On December 19, 2013, SAIA staged a graduation day walkout during a speech delivered by American-Israeli businesswoman and philanthropist Shari Arison, who SAIA described as an “apartheid profiteer.”

During the walk-out,several graduates reportedly wore “no honor in apartheid” stickers on the tops of their graduate caps while their guests waved [00:02:04]keffiyehs.

Before the event, SAIA leader Tareq Radi co-authored with GMU professor and SAIA advisor Craig Willse an "open letter outlining our concerns," hosted on the GMU SAIA website. The open letter quoted University President Ángel Cabrera’s praise of “Arison’s example of practicing moral responsibility in business” as the basis to allege that the “university’s name is being used to whitewash the activities of the Arison Group.”

Radi and Willse claimed “Honoring Arison makes Mason appear to be a PR machine for robber baron billionaires” and claimed that the Arison Group was displacing Bedouins, constructing a “cross-Israel Jewish-only highway”, building a portion of “the Apartheid Wall,” operating “an illegal factory for construction materials” and illegally extracting minerals from the occupied portion of the Dead Sea.

GMU SAIA  - Crashing an Israel Festival

In May 2014, GMU SAIA members crashed an Israeli Independence Festival wearing garments with the SAIA emblem and Keffiyehs. The police permitted the group to enter only after issuing [00:01:53] a warning not to cause trouble. The group subsequently spent their time at the festival arguing [00:05:37] with pro-Israel attendees.

SJP

SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.

The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.

SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.

SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.

SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.

Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
