Solidarity For Palestinian Human Rights

Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR) is an alternative name for Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP).

SPHR was formed in 1999, via a merger between the Concordia Centre for Palestinian Human Rights (CCPHR) at Concordia University (Concordia) and the Palestinian Solidarity Committee (PSC) at McGill University (McGill). Concordia maintains an SPHR chapter and McGill maintains a separate SPHR chapter.

SPHR gained notoriety after instigating a riot at Concordia, which forced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to cancel a speech scheduled for September 9, 2002. Ticket holders later reported that the protesters subjected them to anti-Semitic slogans — and physical attacks. A Holocaust survivor was kicked in the groin and a local rabbi with his wife were assaulted and spat on.

As of February 2017, SPHR had active branches on nine university campuses in Canada — in addition to Concordia and McGill — including: Université de Montréal (UdeM), Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), University of Ottawa (UofO), Queen's University (Queens), McMaster University (Mac), University of British Columbia (UBC), University of Calgary (Calgary), Lethbridge college (Lethbridge) and University of Western Ontario (UWO).

George Brown College (George Brown) and the University of Guelph (UoGuelph) also had SPHR chapters until 2013. However, as of 2017, both appeared to be inactive. The SPHR chapter at the University of Waterloo (UW) changed its name after 2013 to UW Students For Palestinian Rights (SPFR).

SPHR chapters have consistently defended violence against Israelis. SPHR chapters have also used the demonization of Israel to justify terrorism.

SPHR Concordia’s constitution (last updated February 25, 2015) denies the Jewish people’s right to national self-determination. The group aspires “to promote and protect Palestinian human rights both locally and internationally,” including what it calls “the right of resistance against human rights abuses.”
