Abdullah Hamlawi

Overview

Abdullah Hamlawi [Abdullah Al Hamlawi] has glorified Hitler and engaged in anti-Israel activism with Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR) at McMaster University (McMaster SPHR). SPHR is an alternative name for Students for Justice In Palestine (SJP).

Hamlawi is a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

For more information, see the McMaster SPHR Chapter Profile

In November 2017, Hamlawi was reportedly an undergraduate student at McMaster, where he was “a fourth year health studies and peace studies student.” McMaster is located in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

Between 2014 and 2017, Hamlawi went by the username “beautiful nightmare” and used the handle “@ahamlawi” on Twitter.

Hamlawi also expressed support for terror before attending university.

Glorifying Hitler

On October 18, 2014, Hamlawi tweeted: “‘@soph1c Things that inspire me: Plato's intellect, Gates' generosity, Gandhi's kindness, Hitler's charisma.’”

Anti-Israel Activism (SPHR, BDS)

On May 19, 2016, Hamlawi tweeted that BDS is “a form of non-violent resistant to Israeli occupation.” In the same tweet, he wrote his opposition to anti-BDS legislation in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario.

In 2015, Hamlawi participated in activism with McMaster BDS when the group pushed for the passage of a divestment resolution. The resolution reportedly [p. 3] called on the student body to endorse the BDS movement and “commit to identifying and divesting from companies that support or profit from Israeli war crimes, occupation and oppression of Palestinians.”

The resolution was reportedly proposed by then-McMaster SPHR president Yara Shoufani. It was promoted by McMaster SPHR and endorsed by the Hamilton chapter of Independent Jewish Voices (IJV) Canada (IJV Hamilton).

The vote on the BDS resolution was scheduled to be held at the McMaster Student Union General Assembly (MSU GA) on March 23, 2015.

On March 23, 2015, Hamlawi tweeted: “RT THIS! we're 70 people short, if you're on campus right now come to IWC just for a while and vote yes to BDS!!”

Also on March 23, 2015, Hamlawi quoted a tweet that said: “‘...at the vote for BDS assembly ! @ahamlawi ’.” He also included photos that showed him wearing a keffiyeh and standing in front of a microphone.

The BDS resolution reportedly passed at the MSU GA.

On March 23, 2015, Hamlawi was tagged in a tweet with McMaster SPHR leader Lina Assi that celebrated the resolution’s passing: “So proud of my beautiful friends @LinaKuffiyeh and @ahamlawi (+others) for their hard work and dedication in ensuring this was possible!”

Also on March 23, 2015, Hamlawi tweeted: “So happy of my university for passing BDS today :) #gomacgo.”

On the same day, Hamlawi featured on Facebook in a group photo posted by Salah Abdelrahman, captioned: “The team that made it happen. Team BDS at McMaster.”

Hamlawi also tweeted: “‘@EsraBengizi1D: BDS PASSED AT MCMASTER UNIVERSITY!!!! Thank you to the amazing @LinaKuffiyeh and @ahamlawi 💗😘💋💞.” His tweet quoted and responded to a tweet from McMaster SPHR activist Esra Bengizi.

Hamlawi retweeted a March 21, 2015 tweet by McMaster BDS that said: “Vote Yes to Justice, vote Yes to Peace, Vote Yes to BDS, McMaster! Come out to the General Assembly this Monday…” The McMaster tweet included a link to a BDS promotional video on Facebook.

In March 2015, Hamlawi tweeted twice to promote McMaster SPHR’s Israeli Apartheid Week.

Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) is presented internationally as a “series of events that seeks to raise awareness of…Israel’s settler-colonial project and apartheid system over the Palestinian people.” One of its goals is to build support for the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement. IAW has been renamed Palestine Awareness Week.

Pre-University Terror Support

On January 19, 2014, Hamlawi tweeted: “Maybe the start of the third intifada is not that far away…”

The term “intifada,” which translates from Arabic as “uprising” or “insurrection,” carries the connotation of violence. Palestinian intifadas waged against Israel have been marked since 1987 by hundreds of hijackings, shootings, stabbings, bombings and suicide missions.

The tweet linked to a January 17, 2014 article published by the anti-Israel publication Middle East Monitor, titled: “Israeli settlers storm Al-Aqsa Mosque and climb Dome of the Rock.”

Palestinians and anti-Israel activists have historically described visits by Jews to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem as “incursions” during which Jews purportedly “storm” the Temple Mount and Al-Aqsa Mosque. Palestinians have also frequently used the mosque to stockpile stone slabs, fireworks and rocks, with which they attack Israeli security officers and non-Muslim visitors to the Temple Mount.

SJP

SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.

The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.

SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.

SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.

SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.

Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
