Carly Hunter

Overview

Carly Hunter has justified violence against Israelis, spread hatred of Israel and was an organizer with Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR) at McMaster University (McMaster) in 2014, an activist in 2015 and an affiliate from 2016 to 2017.

SPHR is an alternative name for Students For Justice In Palestine (SJP). For more information, see the McMaster SPHR Chapter Profile

Hunter is a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

In July 2017, Hunter’s LinkedIn profile said she graduated from McMaster with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and anthropology in 2016 and a bachelor’s in “Biology, General” in 2014.

As of October 2022, Hunter was an occupational therapist at St. Joseph's Health Centre of Sudbury in Sudbury, Ontario.

As of September 2023, Hunter used the name “Jce Hunter” on Facebook.

Justifying Violence Against Israelis

On December 12, 2015, Hunter shared on Facebook an article titled: “How The Human Rights Industry Undermines Palestinian Liberation.” The article criticized the “imposition” of liberal human rights discourse that resulted in the “de-legitimization of armed forms of resistance,” such as “when violent Palestinian resistance was demonized” after the Second Intifada.

The second intifada (2000-2005) was characterized by more than 120 suicide bombings targeting Israeli civilians on buses and in cafes.

Referring to the “current uprising in Palestine,” the article said: “With the very limited arsenal at their disposal including kitchen knives, rocks, and Molotov cocktails, Palestinian youth are trying to reclaim the agency that has been taken away from them…”

In October 2015, there was an upsurge in violence across Israel incited by Palestinian political and religious leaders. The wave of stabbings, known as the “Knife Intifada,” was characterized by young Palestinians throughout the country stabbing and attempting to stab Israeli civilians.

Hatred of Israel

On February 12, 2017, Hunter shared on Facebook a McMaster SPHR post that claimed: “Israel is a white-supremacist colonial state that seeks to ban and exile anyone who does not fit into their demographic as a White, Jewish state.”

On December 23, 2015, Hunter shared on Facebook a video by AJ+ that was captioned: “Security? Or apartheid? We look at what Israel's separation wall is really doing.”

The video’s presenter, Dena Takruri, characterized [00:00:07] Israel’s security fence, 97% of which is a low chain link barrier, as an 8-meter-high wall running 280 miles. Takuri also insinuated [00:00:12] that a non-binding advisory opinion on the security fence issued by the International Court of Justice is binding international law.

Israel's security fence was built in response to Palestinian sniper attacks and as a deterrent to Palestinian terror attacks.

Anti-Israel Activism

On February 26, 2017, Hunter shared a Facebook post by McMaster SPHR promoting their annual Israeli Apartheid Week.

Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) is presented internationally as a “series of events that seeks to raise awareness of…Israel’s settler-colonial project and apartheid system over the Palestinian people.” One of its goals is to build support for the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement. IAW has been renamed Palestine Awareness Week.

Also on February 26, 2017, Hunter set her Facebook profile picture to a McMaster SPHR poster promoting IAW.

On March 18, 2016, Hunter shared a Facebook post from McMaster BDS that featured photos from two different McMaster Students’ Union (MSU) General Assemblies.

The first showed a full auditorium during a BDS vote. The second showed an almost empty auditorium when there was no BDS vote. The post said: “...A good reminder that BDS is a student movement that engages students on campuses in student politics…”

On March 9, 2016, Hunter posted on Facebook promoting a McMaster SPHR event for IAW, titled “Apartheid: Live!” On the same date, she shared a Facebook post by McMaster SPHR showing photos from the event of a “mock apartheid wall” labeled “Barrier to Peace.” The event also featured infographics that called Gaza “An Open Air Prison.”

The “mock apartheid wall” is a series of panels meant to represent Israel's security barrier. Panels feature misleading statistics and “facts” that present a skewed image of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

On March 23, 2015, Hunter featured in a Facebook group photo posted by McMaster anti-Israel activist Salah Abdelrahman that was captioned: “The team that made it happen. Team BDS at McMaster.”

On March 23, 2015, the MSU voted to pass a BDS motion endorsed by McMaster SPHR and other student groups.

On March 16, 2015, Hunter posted on Facebook promoting a McMasterBDS event titled “BDS 101.” Hunter wrote: “When South African apartheid was happening McMaster was one of the schools to pass BDS to support an end to apartheid. There are info sessions all this week… to answer any questions students might have on why BDS is being brought back to campus again.”

On March 9, 2015, Hunter featured in a photo posted on Facebook by McMaster SPHR as part of a photo album of participants in the group’s annual IAW.

On September 24, 2014, Hunter co-hosted an SPHR event titled “Palestine 101,” “outlining the struggle of apartheid Palestine.”

On March 19, 2014, Hunter posted on Facebook a graphic that said: “TAKE A STAND AGAINST WAR CRIMES / vote YES to BDS.”

On March 26, 2014, the MSU voted in favor of a BDS resolution.

SJP

SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.

The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.

SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.

SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.

SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.

Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
