Rena-Michelle Shanawany
Overview
Shanawany was a “Guru” for San Jose State University (SJSU)’s Muslim Students Association (MSA) in 2012-2013, as well as the group’s president in 2011-2012.
In May 2015, Shanawany was affiliated with the San Francisco Bay Area (SFBA) chapter of American Muslims for Palestine (AMP).
As of July 2022, Shanawany’s LinkedIn page said she was a “Loan Documentation Specialist” at CommerceWest Bank since March 2022.
As of the same date, Shanawany’s LinkedIn also said she was a “Certified Nurse Assistant” with “California Dept. of Public Health,” Credential ID 00774479, issued in “Feb 2010,” with no expiration date. However, the California Department of Public Health official records do not indicate that Shanawany holds a valid license.
Shanawany’s LinkedIn also said she graduated from the University of Central Florida (UCF) with an associate’s degree in Biology in 2009, and graduated from SJSU with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 2013.
Shanawany’s LinkedIn said she was located in Orange County, California.
Hatred of Israel
On August 2, 2014, Shanawany posted to Facebook: “Today almost everything is made in China, except for cowards. They are made in Israel.”On July 26, 2014, Shanawany shared a graphic on Facebook that included a partial map of Israel with an arrow pointing to the West Bank and text that read: “The 3 young Israeli boys are allegedly abducted here.”
Hamas was responsible for the kidnapping of three Israeli teenagers from a bus stop on June 12, 2014. The abducted boys were murdered by their captors, and their bodies were found buried in Palestinian-controlled territory on June 30, 2014.
Shanawany’s graphic also included text that read: “Israel decides that instead of sending detectives to the kidnapping scene and where the bodies were found , it is better to bomb here [Gaza].”
The Hamas terror organization is based in Gaza.
On July 22, 2014, Shanawany wrote in a Facebook post: “F**k you Israel. Your existence is the reason God created a Judgement Day.”
On October 1, 2011, Shanawany shared images promoting the Al-Durah hoax on Facebook and wrote: “NEVER FORGET. On this day in 2000 at the beginning of the second Intifada the Israeli army shot 12 year-old Muhammad al-Durrah in his father's lap.”
The Al-Durah hoax is an iconic piece of anti-Israel propaganda, fabricated on September 30, 2000 at the start of the Second Intifada by a France 2 reporter.
The second intifada (2000-2005) was characterized by more than 120 suicide bombings targeting Israeli civilians on buses and in cafes.
Shanawany’s Facebook post included a photo of al-Durrah often used to incite anti-Israel and anti-Semitic violence.
Endorsing an Anti-Israel Agitator
On November 10, 2015, Shanawany indicated on Facebook that she attended a November 11, 2015 event titled: “Gaza At Night: A Visual Talk by Dr. Mads Gilbert.” The event was hosted by the Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) chapter at Stanford University.Gilbert has been banned indefinitely from entering Gaza through Israel because of his connections to the Hamas leadership. In 2008, 2009, 2012 and 2014, Gilbert acted as a propagandist for Hamas.
In 2001, following al Qaeda's September 11 terrorist attacks, Gilbert expressed support for the terror acts as a “legitimate response.”
On November 12, 2015, Shanawan commented on a Facebook photo of fellow SJSU student Meshal Alshahrani posing next to Gilbert and wrote: “Isn’t he such a humble and loving human being? Masha Allah [God has willed].”
Anti-Israel Activism
On May 27, 2015, Shanaway featured in an AMP-Bay Area Facebook group photo, sitting next to anti-Israel activist Taher Herzallah. The Facebook post read: “Special thanks to Yazan Barham Photography for capturing our volunteers on the night of our AMP AIQuds Fundraiser at the MCA in Santa Clara, with Taher Herzallah… Ishacq Nada.”Herzallah is the Associate Director of Outreach & Grassroots Organizing of American Muslims for Palestine (AMP). He has expressed support for violence against Israeli Jews, spread an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory and posted pro-terrorist imagery on social media.
On August 21, 2014, Shanawany promoted an event on Facebook titled: “To Exist is to Resist” that featured Hatem Bazian as a speaker and was co-sponsored by AMP.
Hatem Bazian is the founder of the anti-Israel organizations Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and American Muslims for Palestine (AMP). Bazian has a decades-long history of incitement and of using classic anti-Semitic tropes to demonize Israel.
Supporting BDS
In February 2011, Shanawany co-created a Facebook event page called: “Divest from Israel!”The Facebook event description read: “The Israeli Zionists. Their plan is evil. We all know that. But what we don’t know is how clever they are. Sure they are bribing the government for money to be sent in military and financial aid. But they’re also taking money out of our pockets every single day.”
The description continued: “...They're sneaky. They won't ask you to support them directly. Because of course we'll say NO! So they've decided to sell everyday products and services that discreetly support their plan.”
The description encouraged readers to “pick a product or service” that supports Israeland “promise to refrain from it...By doing this you are no longer supporting an illegal settlement and the oppression of an innocent racial group!”
The Facebook description concluded: “ONCE YOU'VE DECIDED WHAT PRODUCT/SERVICE YOU'RE GOING TO DIVEST FROM, PLEASE POST IT AS A COMMENT TO ENCOURAGE OTHERS! THANKS! ...Spread the word!”
MSA
The MSA was established by members of the Muslim Brotherhood in January 1963 at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, with the goal of "spreading Islam as students in North America." A 2004 FBI investigation uncovered an internal Muslim Brotherhood document in which a brotherhood leader identified the MSA as "one of our organizations."
The MSA reportedly has “nearly 600 chapters” located in the United States and Canada, and is “the most visible and influential Islamic student organization in North America,” boasting conferences, special events, publications, websites and other activities.
The organization includes a number of previous chapter presidents with explicit links to terrorist groups. Included are al-Qaeda cleric Anwar al-Awlaki (Colorado State University), Somali al-Shabaab militant leader Omar Shafik Hammami (University of South Alabama) and Pakistani Taliban recruiter Ramy Zamzam of the MSA's Washington, D.C. council.
AMP
American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) was founded by UC Berkeley Professor Hatem Bazian as a vehicle to generate mainstream support in the United States for the Palestinian national cause.
On its website, the organization lists Bazian as the chairman of its national board and describes itself as “a national education and grassroots-based organization, dedicated to educating the American public about Palestine and its rich cultural, historical and religious heritage.”
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has accused AMP of promoting “extreme anti-Israel views and has at times provided a platform for anti-Semitism under the guise of educating Americans” about Palestinians. The ADL further stated that AMP is directly involved in campus-based anti-Israel activity through Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP).
Prior to founding the AMP in 2006, Dr. Bazian created SJP together with fellow UC Berkeley Professor Snehal Shingavi in 2001. The close working relationship between AMP and SJP has been documented several times over the years by several organizations, including NGO Monitor and StandWithUs.
In addition to providing financial, public relations and legal assistance to SJP, AMP has also been accused of having connections to Hamas. The AMP national board includes former members of both the Islamic Association of Palestine (IAP) and Holy Land Foundation (HLF), both of which were found liable for aiding and abetting Hamas. The IAP was founded by Mousa Mohammed Abu Marzook, a senior member of Hamas.
BDS
The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.
One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”
Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”
In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”
The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.
BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.
The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.
Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.
BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
