Disrupting a Campus Event
On April 2, 2014, Abushaaban and other SJSU students disrupted [00:00:23] a talk on campus, organized by StandWithUs, an Israeli advocacy group. The talk was given by former Israeli officers, including Lital Shemesh. Students walked out of the lecture as soon as Shemesh mentioned [00:00:08]“serving in the IDF [Israel Defense Forces].”Abushaaban appeared [00:01:41] in a YouTube video taken following the walk-out that showed students recapping the event.
Calling for Israel’s Destruction
On July 17, 2014, during Israel’s “Operation Protective Edge (OPE)” against Hamas in Gaza,Abushaaban posted a comment to Facebook: “...May is [sic] Israel burn and Zionist [sic] drown in the blood of Palestinians they've spilled...”Israel commenced OPE in July 2014 to stop rocket fire targeting Israeli civilians and to destroy Hamas attack tunnels.
Calling for the Expulsion of Jews from Israel
On July 17, 2014, during OPE, Abushaaban commented on a Facebook photo of Israeli children hiding in a bomb shelter from Hamas rockets and wrote: “They wouldn't need a bomb shelter if they lived in their rightful homes in their rightful countries of Europe and America. Bunch of fake Jews…”Hamas fired over 4,564 missiles and rockets at Israeli population centers during Operation Protective Edge (OPE) in July 2014.
Comparing Israel to Nazi Germany
On July 17, 2014, during OPE, Abushaaban posted a comment to Facebook that read:“...Zionism is nothing not but racism, new age facism, and would make Nazis proud. Good job Israel, you're new age nazis…”Zionism is the belief that Jews have the right to self-determination in their own national home, and the right to develop their national culture.
Promoting Anti-Semitic Conspiracy Theories
In an August 5, 2014 Facebook post, Abushaaban commented: “...Israel and Zionist [sic] own the media and won't say that…”The assertion that Jews control the media has been traced to the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, an anti-Semitic fabricated text that depicts wealthy Jews conspiring to take over the world.

Hell awaits them.”
Spreading Incitement
In the fall of 2014, Palestinian leaders and media incited a wave of violence against Israelis with the lie that Israel intended to desecrate the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. This resulted in the November 18, 2014 Har Nof massacre, in which terrorists murdered six people in a Jerusalem synagogue during morning prayers.
According to a November 23, 2014 article, published by the Liberation News, a leader and co-founder of SJP at SJSU as well as a co-host of the event, Abid El-miaari, pointed Liberation News to a “list of Israeli crimes motivating the group’s protest,” starting with “The closure/attacks on Al Aqsa Mosque.”
At the march, activists reportedly chanted: “From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free,” as well as “Israel, Israel what do you say, how many kids did you kill today” and “Israel, Israel you can’t hide, we charge you with genocide.”
“From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free” is a chant calling to dismantle the State of Israel. It has also been employed by Hamas leader Khaled Mashal to call for the replacement of Israel with an Islamic state.
Supporting BDS
On January 28, 2019, Abushaaban shared a post to Facebook that read: “Sadaf is a known brand name of Middle Eastern food products that you can find in our homes. Many do not know that this is a pro Israeli company. Unfortunately many of [sic] Arab stores carry their products. Bad enough that they stole our country they continue to attempt to steal our heritage and identity. Please boycott their products and publicize to others to boycott as well.”In 2015, Abushaaban promoted SJP at SJSU’s BDS campaign on social media. The BDS resolution was titled:“In Support of Divestment from Companies That Profit from the Israeli Occupation of the Palestinian Territories.”
The resolution, submitted by Abid El-Miaari, a co-founder of SJP at SJSU and endorsed by 27 SJSU student groups, called on the Board of Directors of the Tower Foundation to divest SJSU’s holdings in a number of companies doing business with Israel.
According to SJSU’s website, the Tower Foundation directly “manages all financial aspects of funds donated to” SJSU.
On October 31, 2015, Abushaaban posted SJP at SJSU’s divestment logo to Facebook.
On November 4, 2015, the resolution was approved with a vote of5-2-0 and put forward to the A.S. Board of Directors.
Abushaaban signed SJP at SJSU’s divestment petition titled “PASS SJSU Divestment!” and read “It’s time to take a stance against unethical investments!” Abushaaban and 484 “supporters” signed the online petition. Under the “Reasons for signing” section, he wrote: “I’m Palestinian and I believe in justice.”
On November 18, 2015, Abushaaban attended the “SJSU Divestment Hearing and Vote” held by the A.S. Board of Directors. The resolution passed with a vote of 10-5-0, reportedly making SJSU the first campus in the California State University system whose student government passed a divestment measure.
On the same date, Abushaaban was tagged in a Facebook photo with fellow SJP activists. The Facebook post read: “We are literally making history. SJSU is the FIRST CSU [California State University] to pass the divestment. I am so happy to be a part of this moment. Alhamdulilah [Praise be to God].”
On December 15, 2015, Board Members of SJSU’s Tower Foundation unanimously rejected the divestment resolution.
SJP
SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.
The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.
SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.
SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.
SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.
Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.
BDS
The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.
One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”
Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”
In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”
The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.
BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.
The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.
Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.
BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
