Ussama Makdisi

Overview

Ussama Makdisi has demonized Israel, accusing Israel of settler colonialism and ethnic cleansing. He spoke at the Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) National Conference in 2017.

Makdisi is the Arab-American Education Foundation Professor in Arabic Studies at Rice University (Rice).

Demonizing Israel

On March 8, 2015, Makdisi gave an interview in which he described “the Israeli doctrine that any form of resistance on the part of Palestinians has to be crushed violently, inhumanly and mercilessly.”

In the same interview, Makdisi went on to describe the “Israeli attempt at complete domination over Palestinians.”

Makdisi authored an article on September 4, 2014, titled “Gun Zionism.” In the article, Makdisi claimed that “Long before Hamas was created, Zionist Israel was a settler-colonial enterprise. It remains one today.”

In the same article, Makdisi claimed that “Zionist forces systematically ethnically cleansed Palestinians during and following the Nakba of 1948.”

In the spring of 2012, Makdisi published an article titled “Setting the Record Straight:The Arabs, Zionism, and the Holocaust.”

In the article, Makdisi described the “Zionist colonization of Palestine” as a process whereby “the indigenous Arab inhabitants of Palestine were uprooted and dispossessed to make way for a Jewish state.”

Supporting SJP

On October 27, 2017, Makdisi appeared on a panel discussion at the SJP National Conference.

NJSP 2017 was scheduled for October 27-29, 2017, in Houston, TX. The conference was themed “A Reimagined World: Dismantling Walls from Palestine to the Rio Grande.” Per the National Students for SJP 2017 Conference website, the conference aimed to strengthen “collaborative efforts within all regions to pass BDS” and envision “pathways to achieving sanctions in the future.”

SJP

SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.

The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.

SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.

SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.

SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.

Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.
