Amani Nijem

Overview

Amani Nijem [Amani Sameer Nijem] has spread an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory andshown support for terrorists. Nijem was a leader and reportedly president of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at Temple University (Temple) in 2017, and was active with Temple SJP since 2015.

Nijem has also demonized Israel and promoted anti-Israel agitators.

She is also a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Nijem attended the 2019 National SJP Conference.

National SJP held their conference at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities (UMN), from November 1-3, 2019. The conference was themed: “Beyond Struggle: From Roots to Branches Towards Liberation.”

On November 4-6, 2016, Nijem attended the 2016 SJP National Conference, held at George Mason University (GMU).

In 2018, Nijem appeared [00:00:48] in an American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) promotional video.

On March 25-27, 2016, she attended SJP’s East Coast National Conference.

In May 2020, Temple’s College of Science and Technology website indicated that Nijem graduated with the Class of 2020, and received a bachelor’s degree in Natural Sciences.

As of September 2020, Nijem indicated on Facebook she was located in Brooklyn, NY.

Anti-Semitic Conspiracy Theory

On November 29, 2016, Nijem tweeted a photographed tweet with the text: “ISIS = Israeli secret intelligence service.” Nijem commented: “ 😂.”

On March 23, 2016, Nijem tweeted a graphic with the text: “So just to recap the last few years of terror events. France recognises Palestine and it gets attacked shortly after by ISIS - TWICE!Japan recognises Palestine and two of its nationals get kidnapped and killed shortly after by ISIS. Indonesia funds hospital in Gaza and shortly after gets attacked by ISIS. Belgium sets a meeting to debate the human rights of the Palestinians and gets attacked shortly after by ISIS. How many more attacks have to take place before the world fully understands that ISIS is run by Israel?”

Nijem commented: “#facts.”

Support for Terrorists

On May 4, 2017, Nijem led a Temple SJP demonstration called the “Saltwater Challenge.”

The “Saltwater Challenge” was held in solidarity with hunger-striking Palestinian prison inmates convicted of terrorism. The strike was initiated by Marwan Barghouti, who was serving five consecutive life sentences for his role in suicide bombings that killed five Israelis during the second intifada. Aarab Barghouti, the son of Marwan Barghouti, launched the "Saltwater Challenge."

Demonizing Israel

On December 10, 2017, Temple SJP posted a photo of Nijem and other activists to Instagram while participating in an anti-Israel protest. Temple SJP added: “#HandsOffJerusalem protest yesterday at City Hall! We will forever protest for the freedom of the Palestinian people and their right to return!! 🇵🇸✊🏼

The “right of return” is a Palestinian demand discredited as a means to eliminate Israel.

The hashtag “#HandsOffJerusalem” was created to protest the U.S. government’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and to relocate the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

On May 5, 2016, Nijem retweeted a tweet that claimed: “Israel bombs Gaza, attacks fishermen & summarily executes Palestinians. Recall this when occupied Palestinians respond to Israeli aggression.”

On December 22, 2016, Nijem retweeted a tweet that claimed: “Israel is torturing Palestinian children, kicking grandfathers out of homes they built & causing mothers to miscarriage at checkpoints…”

On October 26, 2016, Temple SJP tweeted a photo of Nijem presenting a topic titled “Apartheid Wall,” during a Temple SJP event called “Palestine 101.”

On October 7, 2016, Temple’s student newspaper The Temple News reported that Nijem coordinated a Temple SJP October 6, 2016 event hosting anti-Israel activist and BDS supporter Marc Lamont Hill.

In 2015, Hill traveled to Israel with the anti-Israel group Dream Defenders, where he condemned [00:02:52] Israel for “laws… written in the blood of the innocent” and declared “we stand next to people who continue to courageously struggle and resist the occupation.”

On October 30, 2015, Temple SJP posted a photo of Nijem and other activists at an anti-Israel rally. Nijem was shown holding a sign that read: “Stop the killing, stop the hate Israel is a Terror state.”

In October 2015, there was an upsurge in violence across Israel incited by Palestinian political and religious leaders. The wave of stabbings, known as the “Knife Intifada,” was characterized by young Palestinians throughout the country stabbing and attempting to stab Israeli civilians.

Promoting Anti-Israel Agitators

On March 26, 2017, Nijem attended [00:01:02] an anti-Israel rally organized by the national anti-Israel group Al-Awda. The protest demonized the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). Speakers included [00:13:27] Holocaust revisionist [00:00:54] Ryan Dawson, who incited [00:14:30] hatred towards Jews and called [00:14:21] AIPAC a “parasite.”

At the rally, Nijem posed with Iyad Burnat in a picture posted to Temple SJP’s Instagram page.

The Temple SJP’s post misidentified Iyad as his brother, Emad Burnat.

Iyad Burnat — the coordinator of the Bil’in Popular Non Violent Resistance Committee, has repeatedly equated Israel with Hitler and ISIS and has been accused of personally attacking Israeli soldiers. The weekly demonstrations he has organized against the Israeli security barrier since 2005 have frequently turned violent.

Protestors at the rally shouted [00:15:27] “From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free!!” Al-Awda co-founder Abbas Hamideh, who has regularly spread anti-Semitism on his Twitter account, confirmed [00:02:52] that the chant is a call to eliminate Israel.

On August 14, 2020, Nijem posted a photo of herself to Facebook with Janna “Jihad” Ayyad.

Janna Jihad Ayyad Al-Tamimi, also known as Janna Jihad, is an anti-Israel youth activist. She is a relative of Palestinian propagandist Bassem Tamimi, who is notorious for exploiting young children as political props by manufacturing confrontations with Israeli soldiers who respond to the riots that Tamimi organizes.

BDS Activity

On November 28, 2016, Nijem promoted on Facebook an event that Temple SJP co-hosted with Philly BDS, as part of aBoycott HP International Week of Action.”

The Facebook event description was headlined by a graphic of a printer with blood-stained paper and text reading: “hp Harms Palestinians.”

In 2016, the BDS movement targeted the technology company Hewlett Packard (HP) with a worldwide, week-long boycott condemning the company for providing imaging technology for Israeli security checkpoints and technology for Israel’s biometric ID system.

On October 26, 2016, Temple SJP posted a short video clip to Twitter featuring Nijem giving a presentation about BDS during a Temple SJP event called “Palestine 101.” The Tweet held the caption: “Going over BDS”

On October 13, 2016, Nijem retweeted the tweet: “Will your city or organization join the HP Week of Action? Sign up here!”

Temple SJP Activism

On February 2, 2016, Nijem promoted a February 5, 2016 Temple SJP event titled “Free Food Fun Friday with Temple SJP!”

On April 22, 2016, Nijem hosted a Temple SJP “Poetry Night with Remi Kanazi.”

On November 29, 2016, Nijem promoted Temple SJP’s “Speaking Truth to Power” to Facebook.

On November 30, 2016, Temple SJP tweeted a photo of Nijem and other activists, and added: “Great event! Thanks @HSOatTemple, @SMOOTHTemple and everyone else that came out today! #FreeMumia #FreetheMOVE9.”

Mumia Abu Jamal was convicted of murder and sentenced to death in 1982 for the 1981 murder of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner. In 2011, Abu Jamal’s sentence was commuted to life imprisonment without parole.

On April 1, 2018, Temple SJP posted a photo of Nijem and other Temple SJP activists to Instagram, along with Taher Herzallah, the Associate Director of Outreach & Grassroots Organizing of AMP and other AMP activists.

Herzallah has expressed support for violence against Israeli Jews, spread an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory and posted pro-terrorist imagery to social media.

Attending the 2019 National SJP Conference

On November 2, 2019, Clarissa Bitar, who performed at the National SJP Conference, posted a video to her Instagram stories featuring [00:00:10] Nijem and other National SJP Conference attendees dancing.

The 2019 National SJP Conference was held at the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities (UMN), from November 1-3. The Conference themes centered on support for BDS as well as the rejection of Israel and Zionism.

The Conference partnered with numerous anti-Israel organizations and conducted their event in a clandestine manner.

Attending the 2016 National SJP Conference

On January 27, 2017, Nijem was featured in several National SJP 2016 Convention photos posted to Facebook by National SJP.

2019 National SJP - Supporting BDS

The Conference website called to capitalize on shifts in the political climate, represented by the elections to the U.S. Congress of Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, who both support BDS. National SJP speakers also reportedly drew attention to Rep. Omar’s support for the BDS movement as the Representative for UMN’s Congressional district.

During the Conference, National SJP speakers reportedly “noted the success of past divestment campaigns at the University [UMN], which ultimately resulted in the passing of a campus-wide [BDS] referendum in 2018.”

The UMN resolution passed in 2018 by a margin of 3.4 percent of those students who voted, translating to approval by 6.18% of all eligible voters. Less than 13% of the eligible voters actually voted on UMN’s BDS referendum.

2019 National SJP - Rejecting Israel and Zionism

The 2019 National SJP Conference website indicated that the goal of their “solidarity movement” was to push for policies that “demanded the end of” the state of Israel, referred to as “the Israeli occupation.”

The website clarified that “the Palestinian struggle against Zionism, extends beyond the confines of 1967, and well before the Nakba,” and was based on the rejection of Jewish national self-determination in Israel.

Nakba is an Arabic term for “catastrophe” and refers to the outcome of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It is a term often used to delegitimize the creation of the State of Israel.

2019 National SJP - Heightened Secrecy

The 2019 National SJP Conference required attendees to be “verified and vouched for” by an SJP chapter to which they belonged and required each chapter to register as a group. The conference also required each group to be verified by a “reference––someone who is NOT going to this conference but who is or has recently been a part of your SJP.”

Members of allied student groups could register only as part of an SJP chapter delegation which, in turn, needed to be “vouched for by their campus’s SJP” for “security culture and accountability reasons.”

The Conference also restricted media access to journalists “registered and confirmed by our Media Committee in advance to attend the conference. Absolutely no exceptions will be made.”

During the Conference, National SJPreportedly covered the windows of the conference hall.

2019 National SJP - Partnering Organizations

National SJP partnered with other anti-Israel organizations to table, sell merchandise and lead workshops, including CODEPINK, Palestine Youth Movement (PYM), Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), US Palestinian Community Network (USPCN), Palestine Legal, Watan Palestine and the Adalah Justice Project.

Keynote speakers included Loubna Qutami, Chair of PYM, as well as Taher Herzallah of American Muslims for Palestine (AMP). Other speakers included Miko Peled, Sandra Tamari, Suhad Katib, Chris Gazaleh, Clarissa Bitar, Tariq Luthun, Maytha Alhassen and Sima Shakhsari.

Temple SJP - Supporting PFLP Terrorists (2014-2016)

On November 5, 2014, Temple SJP posted on Facebook in support of Rasmea Odeh, and referred to Odeh as a “women’s rights advocate” and “a beloved Palestinian icon.”

Odeh was a key military operative [00:02:08] with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terror group, who masterminded a bombing in a Jerusalem supermarket in 1969 that killed two college students. She also attempted to bomb the British consulate. She later moved to the United States, where she was convicted of immigration fraud in 2014, stripped of her U.S. citizenship and deported to Jordan in 2017.

Also on November 5, 2014, Temple SJP shared on Facebook an image promoting an “Action Plan” for Odeh that directed readers to sign petitions, call political officials, and participate in a social media campaign to get the federal government to drop the charges against Odeh. On November 10, 2014, a federal jury convicted Odeh.

On November 15, 2014, Temple SJP tweeted a photo of their supporters holding a sign that read: “We’re dancing for you Rasmea.” The photo was taken following an SJP Philly event held the day before titled: “Philly, don't Dance with Israeli Apartheid.”

On January 27, 2016, Temple SJP posted to Facebook a photo of four Temple SJP activists holding signs supporting Odeh. One sign read: “DROP THE CHARGES AGAINST RASMEA ODEH,” while another sign said: “Support Palestinian Right To Resist.”

On January 26, 2016, Temple SJP tweeteda graphic honoring PFLP founder George Habash and wrote: “Rest in Power George Habash.” The graphic featured text that read: “As long as you are still fighting in defense of your dignity and for your occupied land, all is well. Revolt, for you have nothing to lose but your chains.”

George Habash, was the 1970 mastermind behind the hijackings of four Western airliners over the United States, Europe, the Far East and the Persian Gulf. In 1972, the PFLP collaborated with Japanese Red Army terrorists to massacre 24 people at Israel's Lod International Airport (renamed Ben Gurion International Airport).

Habash, the founder of the terrorist organization the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), has been called “the godfather of Middle East terrorism.”

On March 8, 2016, Temple SJP tweeted a graphic featuring Leila Khaled holding an assault rifle. Temple SJP wrote: “#InternationalWomensDay.”

Khaled participated in the hijacking of TWA Flight 840 in 1969 and El Al Flight 219 in 1970. As of 2017, Khaled is a leader in the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).

The PFLP claimed credit for the 2014 Har Nof Massacre where six people were murdered during morning prayers in a Jerusalem synagogue. The PFLP also claimed credit for the 2001 assassination of the Israeli tourism minister.

Khaled has compared Zionists to Nazis, said that the second intifada failed because it was not violent enough and advocated for the use of children in terror activities

On August 19, 2016, Temple SJP hosted a demonstration at the Israeli Consulate in Philadelphia calling for the release of Bilal Kayed.

Kayed was a PFLP terrorist who was incarcerated for 14 years for terror attacks and attempted terror attacks committed during the second intifada, in 2002.

Temple SJP - Demonizing Israel (2015-2016)

On April 20, 2016, Temple SJP hosted an “Apartheid Wall Demonstration” event on campus. The Facebook event page said: “We will protest the apartheid and colonialism of the Israeli state against the Palestinian people by setting up a mock wall on campus…”

The “mock apartheid wall” is a display of multiple panels demonizing Israel's security barrier, which was built as a deterrent to Palestinian terror attacks and in response to Palestinian sniper attacks. SJP chapters often erect these displays during their annual Israel Apartheid Week (IAW) event.

On March 26, 2015, Temple SJP held an anti-Israel rally on the Temple campus where activists referred [00:00:59] to Israel’s security barrier as an “apartheid wall.’’ Temple SJP activist Iman Sultan spoke in the video where she encouraged [00:00:21] support for BDSand claimed that Israel practices “apartheid.”

During the event, Brandon-Hai Do, then-vice president of Temple SJP, led [00:00:20] anti-Israel chants. Using a bullhorn, Do told [00:02:15] the crowd: “When freedom isn’t returned to the people, then they are left with no choice but to take it. From North Philly to Palestine we will resist and the wall will be crushed.”

Temple SJP - Promoting BDS (2014-2016)

On November 28, 2016, Temple SJP co-hosted a Boycott HP [Hewlett Packard] teach-in, with Philly BDS, as part of the BDS campaign titled: “Boycott HP International Week of Action.”

Hewlett Packard was targeted with a worldwide, week-long boycott for providing imaging technology for Israel’s checkpoints and other technology.

On October 25, 2016, Temple SJP held an event titled: “Palestine 101,” which promoted BDS.

On November 19, 2015, Temple SJP members held an event titled: “Against Apartheid: The Case for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions.” The event featured Purdue University (Purdue) professor Bill Mullen, a national BDS movement leader and faculty adviser of the SJP Purdue.

On November 14, 2014, Temple SJP and Philly BDS staged a protest against the Israel-based Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company (KCDC) outside of a theater in Philadelphia.

The Facebook event description said that the protest was done “to call out the whitewashing of Israeli genocide of Gaza this summer,” a reference to Israel’s Operation Protective Edge (OPE) against Hamas. Israel commenced OPEin July 2014, to stop rocket fire targeting Israeli civilians and to destroy Hamas attack tunnels

Temple SJP - Hosting Anti-Israel Activists (2014-2016)

On October 28, 2016, Temple SJP hosted an event featuring American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) leader Taher Herzallah titled: “Combating Normalization.”

Proponents of the “anti-normalization” policy seek to police all interactions between Israelis and Palestinians and shut down all conversations and interactions perceived as being ideologically unaligned with their own agenda.

On April 22, 2016, Temple SJP hosted an event featuring anti-Israel poet Remi Kanazi.

Remi Kanazi is an anti-Israel poet who has supported terrorism and has compared Israel to both ISIS and the Ku Klux Klan. He is known for his spoken-word performances which are aggressively anti-Israel.

On March 27, 2014, Temple SJP hosted an event featuring anti-Israel activist Josh Ruebner. At the time of the event, he served as the National Advocacy Director for the U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights (USCPR), a pro-BDS group.

Josh Ruebner has spread anti-Semitism, expressed support for terrorists and defended terrorism. He has also whitewashed [00:03:52] terrorists and promoted hatred of Israel.

Temple SJP - Violent Incident at an SJP Event (2014)

On August 20, 2014, a pro-Israel Temple student was assaulted at a Temple SJP table during Temple Fest, an “involvement fair” on campus.

The attack was reportedly perpetrated by Temple alumnus Aziz Jalil, who allegedly struck the student in the face, as the student was called “Zionist,” "Kike,"“Racist,” "Baby Killer" and other anti-Semitic names and slurs.

Jalil subsequently turned himself in to police and was charged with assault and recklessly endangering another person.

On August 20, 2014, Temple issued a statement, following the attack which said the assault was “alleged to have included physical violence, anti-Semitic statements, and racial slurs.”

On September 3, 2014, Temple SJP claimed that Jalil “was only a visitor to the SJP table” and that he had no formal affiliation with the group. However, other reports and a November 2012 picture posted on the Temple SJP Twitter account contradict this claim.

SJP

SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.

The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.

SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.

SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.

SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.

Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
