Sarah Haley

Sarah Haley’s Hatred of Israel and Participation in the Pro-Hamas Encampment at Columbia University (Columbia)
Sarah Haley has spread hatred of Israel and is a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement and Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP). She also participated in the pro-Hamas encampment at Columbia in April 2024.
As of August 2022, Haley was listed as an associate professor in the Department of History at Columbia in New York City. Her Facebook page said she began teaching at Columbia in July 2021.
As of the same date, Haley was listed by the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) as an associate professor in the university’s Department of African American Studies and Department of Gender Studies. She began teaching at UCLA in 2011.
Also as of August 2022, Haley indicated on her Twitter page that she was located in New York City. However, her Facebook page said she “lives in Los Angeles, California.”
Hatred of Israel
On May 25, 2021, Haley signed a letter published in Vassar College’s student newspaper that accused Israel of “settler colonialism, apartheid, and ethnic cleansing.” The letter that Haley signed also expressed support for the “Palestinian right to return.”
The “right of return” is a Palestinian demand discredited as a means to eliminate Israel. International law mandates no absolute right of return and UN Resolution 194, which defined principles for “refugees wishing to return to their homes,” was unanimously rejected by Arab nations following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
Incitement surrounding Al-Aqsa and Sheikh Jarrah were leading factors in Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorists firing over 4,300 rockets from Gaza at Israeli population centers from May 10 to 21, 2021. In response to rocket attacks from Gaza, Israel launched “Operation Guardian of the Walls (OGW),” striking military targets in the terrorist-controlled enclave.
The allegation that Jews “threaten” to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque has been a pretext for Arab attacks on Jews long before the existence of the modern Jewish state. Such propaganda has led to multiple periods of violence against Israeli civilians.
On January 22, 2019, Haley signed a letter accusing Israel of having “repressive, discriminatory and often violent policies.” The letter was in support of anti-Israel activist Angela Davis and was published in the anti-Israel publication Mondoweiss.
On August 6, 2016, Haley tweeted: “On backlash against MBL's support of Palestine in the new platform. One of the many excellent platform components.” In August 2016, the Movement for Black Lives (M4BL) activist group authored its Policy Platform, which accused Israel of “genocide” and “apartheid.”
On April 28, 2015, Haley tweeted: “Israel evacuates surrogate babies from Nepal but leaves the mothers behind…via @TIMEWorld.”
The tweet referred to the Israeli delegation to Nepal, which brought humanitarian aid and personnel in the wake of a deadly earthquake in Nepal on April 25, 2015.
On May 18, 2014, Haley tweeted: “‘Gendering al-Nakba’ on gender violence, Israeli occupation, & Palestinian resistance by @books_not_bombs … Powerful!
On November 13, 2013, Haley tweeted that Israel practices “apartheid.”
Supporting BDS and SJP
On September 1, 2015, Haley tweeted: “Rapper Talib Kweli takes stand for Palestine, cancels Israel gig | The Electronic Intifada.”
On February 3, 2015, Haley signed a letter by the regional SJP coalition, SJP West, that called on the Student Senate for California Community Colleges to support a BDS resolution. The letter said: “The targeted companies are intricately involved in Israel’s ongoing system of military occupation.”
On November 19, 2014, following the passage of a BDS resolution in the UCLA student government, Haley tweeted: "so proud of @SJPatUCLA and the smart & courageous students in many orgs across campus. @cupofjustice @books_not_bombs."
Also on November 19, 2014, Haley retweeted a tweet from SJP at UCLA that read: “Sorry was too busy celebrating. Divestment at UCLA passes 8-2-2. #UCLADivest.”
In November 2014, Haley authored a letter in support of the same BDS resolution at UCLA. She accused Israel of “apartheid” and claimed that Israel “practices of extreme violence” with the help of certain companies like Caterpillar and General Electric.
Haley retweeted a February 23, 2014, tweet from SJP at UCLA that read: “Professor @RobinDGKelley Statement of Support for Divestment! #UCLADivest…”
Robin Kelley is a leader within the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement and an advisory board member of the U.S. Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (USACBI).
On December 16, 2013, Haley tweeted: “ASA [American Studies Association] members vote 2-1 in favor of academic boycott of Israel!” She linked to a Mondoweiss article about the incident.
Pro-Hamas Encampment at Columbia University
On April 29, 2024, Haley was featured in a photo posted on X in which she was being interviewed while wearing an orange vest alongside other Columbia faculty members. On the same day, Haley was featured in another X photo while forming a human chain with other faculty as they blocked people from entering the encampment.
Numerous Columbia faculty and staff members participated in the encampment wearing bright orange vests with yellow and gray stripes. Taped to each vest was a label that said either “FACULTY” or “STAFF.” They had organized to support the student protestors in various ways. Some made up a “human barricade” to prevent Jewish students from entering [00:03:16] the campus, and some held signs saying: “HANDS OFF OUR STUDENTS" and [00:00:31]“No cops on campus.” Other faculty and staff “lined up in front of the encampment in a show of solidarity with the student body."
On May 2, 2024, UofT Occupy for Palestine (Occupy UofT) activists “stormed down” fencing around UofT’s Kings College Circle and set up a pro-Hamas and pro-BDS encampment called the “People’s Circle for Palestine.” Protesters chanted [00:02:59] for “intifada” and celebrated “resistance” [00:02:45]. Both terms are calls for terrorism. Activists chanted [00:01:28; 00:02:21] for Israel’s destruction multiple times.
After the October 7, 2023 massacre of nearly 1,200 Israelis, the inverted red triangle -
- became a Hamas symbol. It appeared on large signs at the encampment and was featured in other encampment-related activism. Openly pro-Hamas marches began elsewhere in the city and ended at the encampment. In one incident, pro-Hamas activists punched a Jewish man, stole his Israeli flag and shouted anti-Semitic slurs.Protesters occupied [00:00:17] the area from May to July 2024, despite UofT warning they were trespassing. On July 3, 2024, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice issued an injunction at UofT’s request, requiring the encampment to be cleared. Occupy UofT dismantled the encampment and wrote a statement that ended: “Long live the intifada.”
BDS
The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.
One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”
Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”
In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”
The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.
BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.
The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.
Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.
BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
SJP
SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.
The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.
SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Student Association (MSA) campus chapters.
SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.
SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.
Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.
