Maytha Alhassen

Overview

Maytha Alhassen has expressed support for terrorists, promoted anti-Israel agitators and is a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Alhassen was a panelist at the 2019 National Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) Conference. National SJP 2019 for Non-UMN students.

Alhassen has also featured as a speaker for various SJP chapters. In September 2018, Alhassen spoke at an event hosted by the anti-Israel organization U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights (USCPR). In 2015, Alhassen co-organized [00:02:27] and co-led an anti-Israel trip with Dream Defenders (DD), and was reportedly affiliated with the anti-Israel activist group Black4Palestine (B4P) in 2018.

As of December 2020, Alhassen’s LinkedIn page said she was a writer at the Ramy TV Show since June 2019 as well as an Adjunct Professor at Chapman University (Chapman) in California, since December 2018.

Also as of December 2020, Alhassen’s LinkedIn said she was an Associate Professor at Prescott College, Arizona, since August 2018 and a “Guest Co-host/Digital producer” for the anti-Israel publication Al Jazeera English (AJ English), since September 2011.

Support for Terrorists

On May 1, 2015, Alhassen tweeted a photo of terrorist Rasmea Odeh and wrote: “Palestinian Rasmea Odeh, who the U.S. government is trying to deport for her organizing work on #BlackLivesMatter✊🏿.”

Odeh was a key military operative [00:02:08]with the terrorist group the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). In 1969, Odeh masterminded a PFLP bombing that killed two college students in a Jerusalem supermarket. Odeh also attempted to bomb the British consulate.

Odeh confessed, in a highly detailed account, the day following her arrest. In a 2004 documentary, one of Odeh’s co-conspirators directly implicated [00:10:53] Odeh as the mastermind.

In 1970, an Israeli court tried and convicted Odeh for her involvement in both bombings and sentenced her to life imprisonment. However, Odeh was released 10 years later, in a prisoner swap and emigrated to the United States.

On November 10, 2014, a Michigan federal jury convicted Odeh for immigration fraud because she failed to disclose her prior conviction and life sentence on her immigration application. On March 12, 2015, she was sentenced to 18 months in prison.

In 2017, after an appeal and a lengthy court battle, Odeh admitted to immigration fraud, was stripped of her U.S. citizenship, deported to Jordan and banned from re-entering the U.S.

On January 5, 2015, Alhassen posted a photo of herself to Instagram, posing in front of a mural of terrorist Marwan Barghouti painted on Israel’s security barrier and wrote: “‘Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.’...Break down walls, let love through...At the apartheid wall in Qalandia... #DDPalestine #Palestine...”

Marwan Barghouti is currently serving five consecutive life sentences for his role in suicide bombings and shooting attacks that killed five Israelis during the second intifada

Barghouti led the the Palestinian Authority (PA) terrorist Tanzim force and founded the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades. He also financed the guitar-case bomb used in the Sbarro Cafe massacre, where 15 civilians were killed and 130 injured.

Israel’s security barrier, 97 percent of which is a low chain-link barrier, was built as a deterrent to Palestinian terror attacks. The concrete portions of the fence were built in response to Palestinian sniper attacks.

On December 23, 2012, Alhassen tweeted: “This should explain how Islamic political movements like MB [Muslim Brotherhood], Salafism, Hamas, Hizbullah, etc are nothing more than nationalist movements…”

Hamas is a designated terrorist organization by the European Union, Canada, Australia, the United States and Israel.

Hezbollah has long been known as an anti-Semitic and genocidal terror organization dedicated to destroying Israel.

The Muslim Brotherhood (MB) is a transnational Islamist organization founded in Egypt in 1928. It was designated as a terrorist organization by Egypt (2013), Saudi Arabia (2014), the United Arab Emirates (2014) and Bahrain (2017). Among its offshoots is Hamas, a terrorist group dedicated to Israel’s destruction.

Leading an Anti-Israel Trip

In 2015, Alhassen co-organized [00:02:27] a DD trip, the reported goals of which were “for the group members to experience and see first hand the occupation, ethnic cleansing and brutality Israel has levied against Palestinians.”

Dream Defenders (DD) is a socialist Black liberation group that promotes BDS and has accused Israel of “genocide” and “ethnic cleansing” against Palestinians. DD has led several delegations to Israel, in which participants met exclusively with anti-Israel groups and individuals, including militants from the terrorist organization Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).

In November 2018, Hill was fired from his contributor position at CNN (Cable News Network) after he gave an anti-Israel speech at the United Nations. He called [00:20:47] for a “free Palestine from the river to the sea,” a phrase associated with demands to dismantle the State of Israel. Hill also accused [00:16:19] Israel of “ethnic cleansing,” as well as [00:17:49] “white supremacy” and [00:17:56] “settler colonialism.”
Anti-Israel activist, Ahmad Abuznaid, who is also a co-founder of DD, reportedly said in 2015 that the DD trips are intended “to build real relationships with those on the ground leading the fight for liberation.” He also said [00:12:22] in a Youtube video that the 2015 DD delegation met with the group Addameer while in Ramallah.

Addameer is an NGO that advocates on behalf of prisoners held in Israeli jail, including many terrorists such as Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) recruiters Mohammad Allan and Khader Adnan. Addameer’s senior leadership includes [pp. 29-35] senior Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terrorists like Khalida Jarrar, whom Addameer also advocates for. In 2021, Israel officially designated Addameer as a terror organization.

On January 4 and 5, 2015, DD published Flickr photos, that featured Alhassen posing in multiple photoswith Palestinian politician Diana Buttu

Former Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) spokesperson Diana Buttu served in the PLO during the second intifada when the PLO, under the auspices of Fatah’s Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigade, carried out terror attacks and suicide bombings against Israeli civilians.

On January 5, 2015, DD published a photo to Flickr that featured Alhassen, Buttu and other women on the trip in front of a mural honoring terrorist Marwan Barghouti.

On January 13, 2015, DD published a Vimeo video showing [00:00:12] the DD delegation calling [00:00:07] for BDS in Nazareth, a city in northern Israel. Alhassen also featured [00:06:43] in the video,

On May 15, 2015, Alhassen posted a photo of Abuznaid to Instagram and wrote: “I can't stop smiling: #DDPalestine delegates @ajamonet @diplomatesq ON FLEEEEEK (after they presented at #jvp2015 conference in #Baltimore AND after Dr. Davis lauded @thedreamdefenders & our delegation!!!).”

On August 8, 2015, Alhassen posted a group photo to Instagram and wrote: “...A solidarity statement spearheaded by @Kristianbailey...They used our post-flash mob demo in Nazareth pic for the story. Honored to be visually associated with this incredible achievement. #repost from @thedreamdefenders.”

Promoting Anti-Israel Agitators

On April 15, 2018, Alhassen posted a photo of herself alongside anti-Israel activists, Linda Sarsour and Zahra Biloo to Instagram and wrote: “we shake sh!&t up with salaams + a smile…”

Linda Sarsour has frequently used the word “Zionist” as a pejorative and has tweeted that “nothing is creepier than Zionism.” She has aligned with noted anti-Semite Louis Farrakhan, dismissed [00:07:45] those who see her alignment with Farrakhan as problematic and slammed the “Jewish Media” for calling attention to it.

At Farrakhan’s 2015 #JusticeOrElse March, Sarsour asserted [00:00:36]: “The same people who justify the massacres of Palestinian people and call it ‘collateral damage’ are the same people who justify the murder of young black men and women.”

Billoo has spread anti-Semitism and defended the terror organizations Hamas and Hezbollah. Billoo has also equated Israel with ISIS and spread hatred of Israel and America.

On May 14, 2017, Alhassen posted a photo of herself with Sarsour to Instagram and wrote: “...honored to moderate convo between @aja_monet & @lsarsour...at the Brooklyn Museum. Overjoyed to be enraptured in the love of my fellow #FreedomFighters...And it goes without saying, but always worth repeating #IStandwithLinda…”

On December 15, 2014, Alhassen posted to Instagram another photo of herself next to Sarsour and wrote: “That's my #Brooklyn ukh @lsarsour right there. So grateful for ‘this (spicey) woman's work.’... Thank you for representing us (& Brooklyn) with deeply honest love, vigor & vision. Excited to start penning your biography ☺️ early...”

Anti-Israel Activism

On February 25, 2020, Alhassen was featured as a speaker for an event hosted by the SJP chapter at Colorado College (CC), titled: “Centering Palestine: Settler-Colonialism and Inter-Group Solidarity.”

On March 28, 2019, during Israel Apartheid Week (IAW), Alhassen ran a workshop for the SJP chapter at Kenyon College (Kenyon). The workshop was titled: “Integrative Abolition: Theater of the Oppressed Exercises for Embodied Freedom.” On the same day,she also presented a talk titled: “Intersectional Abolition: No Ban. No Wall. No Prisons. No Cops.”

Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) is presented as “an international series of events that seek to raise awareness of…Israel’s settler-colonial project and apartheid system over the Palestinian people” and build support for the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

On September 30, 2018, Alhassen featured on a panel discussion alongside anti-Israel activist Huwaida Arraf at the 2018 USCPR National Conference. The session was titled: “Global Struggles for Collective Liberation.”

Formerly known as the U.S. Campaign to End the Occupation, USCPR is a coalition of American-based anti-Israel organizations that lobbies the United States Congress to adopt anti-Israel policies and end government support for Israel.

During the panel discussion, Alhassen endorsed [00:40:50] the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM). The PYM has expressed support for terrorists, promoted incitement to violence and advocated for the dissolution of the State of Israel.

She also praised [00:51:28] anti-Israel activist and co-founder of B4P, Kristian Davis Bailey.

Bailey was arrested and charged for participating in a protest that caused traffic accidents. He also expressed support for terrorists, defended the terror organization Hamas and promoted “armed resistance.”

On March 1, 2018, Alhassen featured as a guest speaker for an event hosted by University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg, South Africa. The event was titled: “Malcolm X and Afro-Palestinian Solidarity” and was described as a “build-up” to Wits’ IAW. The event was co-hosted by BDS South Africa and the Wits Palestine Solidarity Committee (PSC) chapter..

Supporting BDS

On September 28, 2020, Alhassen featured in an interview on YouTube hosted by Alex Abassi, where she discussed “Afro Palestine Solidarity.” During the interview she endorsed [00:10:50] BDS, stating: “So the relationship that you guys have, and the work that you deploy me to do, it just blew my mind, it blew my mind that being part of this BDS movement had the capacity to be so integral…”

In 2018, Alhassen was in South Africa for the 14th IAW with BDS South Africa. On March 3, 2018, an interview featuring Alhassen was published to YouTube, in which she promoted [00:06:20] BDS and said: “we're asking as the 1970s, 80s campaign to divest from apartheid South Africa was successful towards bringing down and shaming the South African apartheid government, this BDS campaign will do so with the apartheid state of Israel.”

On August 4, 2014, Alhassen tweeted promoting a BDS anthology called: “The Case for Sanctions Against Israel.”

On May 14, 2014, Alhassen tweeted: “Angela Davis covers some of the companies on #BDS list: SodaStream, Caterpillar, Super Shuttle, Hewitt Packard, & G4S (security for prisons).”

Speaking at the 2019 National SJP Conference

On November 4, 2019, SJP at Fordham University posted a photo of Alhassen participating in the same panel, as part of the closing plenary of the Conference.

On November 3, 2019, Alhassen was featured in an Instagram story posted by SJP at Occidental College where she was listed as a panelist at the 2019 National SJP conference closing plenary.

The 2019 National SJP Conference was held at the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities (UMN), from November 1-3. The Conference themes centered on support for BDS as well as the rejection of Israel and Zionism.

The Conference partnered with numerous anti-Israel organizations and conducted their event in a clandestine manner.

2019 National SJP - Supporting BDS

The Conference website called to capitalize on shifts in the political climate, represented by the elections to the U.S. Congress of Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, who both support BDS. National SJP speakers also reportedly drew attention to Rep. Omar’s support for the BDS movement as the Representative for UMN’s Congressional district.

During the Conference, National SJP speakers reportedly “noted the success of past divestment campaigns at the University [UMN], which ultimately resulted in the passing of a campus-wide [BDS] referendum in 2018.”

The UMN resolution passed in 2018 by a margin of 3.4 percent of those students who voted, translating to approval by 6.18% of all eligible voters. Less than 13% of the eligible voters actually voted on UMN’s BDS referendum.

2019 National SJP - Rejecting Israel and Zionism

The 2019 National SJP Conference website indicated that the goal of their “solidarity movement” was to push for policies that “demanded the end of” the state of Israel, referred to as “the Israeli occupation.”

The website clarified that “the Palestinian struggle against Zionism, extends beyond the confines of 1967, and well before the Nakba,” and was based on the rejection of Jewish national self-determination in Israel.

Nakba is an Arabic term for “catastrophe” and refers to the outcome of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It is a term often used to delegitimize the creation of the State of Israel.

2019 National SJP - Heightened Secrecy

The 2019 National SJP Conference required attendees to be “verified and vouched for” by an SJP chapter to which they belonged and required each chapter to register as a group. The conference also required each group to be verified by a “reference––someone who is NOT going to this conference but who is or has recently been a part of your SJP.”

Members of allied student groups could register only as part of an SJP chapter delegation which, in turn, needed to be “vouched for by their campus’s SJP” for “security culture and accountability reasons.”

The Conference also restricted media access to journalists “registered and confirmed by our Media Committee in advance to attend the conference. Absolutely no exceptions will be made.”

During the Conference, National SJPreportedly covered the windows of the conference hall.

2019 National SJP - Partnering Organizations

National SJP partnered with other anti-Israel organizations to table, sell merchandise and lead workshops, including CODEPINK, Palestine Youth Movement (PYM), Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), US Palestinian Community Network (USPCN), Palestine Legal, Watan Palestine and the Adalah Justice Project.

Keynote speakers included Loubna Qutami, Chair of PYM, as well as Taher Herzallah of American Muslims for Palestine (AMP). Other speakers included Miko Peled, Sandra Tamari, Suhad Katib, Chris Gazaleh, Clarissa Bitar, Tariq Luthun, Maytha Alhassen and Sima Shakhsari.

Al Jazeera English

Al Jazeera English (AJ English) is a Qatari-owned news channel, part of the Al Jazeera Media Network (Al Jazeera), headquartered in Doha, Qatar. Al Jazeera and AJ English are owned by the Qatari government and are financed by Sheikh Hamad bin Thamer Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar.

AJ English has come under scrutiny by the U.S. State Department for Qatari “editorial and programmatic control” of AJ English, as Qatar is also the principal financial backer of the terror groups Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood.

AJ English has a significant social media following and has used its platforms to spread anti-Semitism, whitewash terrorists and promote anti-Israel propaganda.

AJ English is geared to a Western audience and has been careful to distance itself from controversy involving AJ’s Arabic news channels. When caught minimizing the murder of Jewish Israelis or publishing falsehoods that demonize Israel, AJ English has usually been quick to retract its statements.
Based in Florida, Dream Defenders (DD) was founded in 2012 to create a "new generation" of organizers working to end domestic and foreign wars, to promote free public education, community control of economic resources, release of prisoners from American prisons and an end to the Capitalist system in the United States.

The group later adopted a harsh anti-Israel position, accused Israel of “genocide” and “ethnic cleansing” against Palestinians and declared: “we will not allow anyone to bully us into sanitizing our words.”

The group also demanded the U.S. government“divest from military expenditures and US aid to the State of Israel and instead, invest this war-making money towards building infrastructure to support Black and Brown communities in the US.”

DD has led several delegations to Israel and where they met exclusively with anti-Israel groups and individuals, including militants from the terrorist organization PFLP.

A statement published by DD website also condemned prior allies who objected to DD’s anti-Israel stance, saying: “On the American left, there are many wolves in sheeps clothing [sic]. You have revealed yourselves. And now that we know who you are, we will not forget.”

DD has supported the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement as early December 2014.

DD is a project of the Tides Center, linked to anti-Israel billionaire George Soros and is a leading organization within the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, which was founded in 2013.

SJP

SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.

The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.

SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.

SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.

SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.

Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
