Nagham Azzam Iqbal
Overview
Nagham Azzam Iqbal has spread incitement and hatred of Israel. She was an activist with Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR) at McMaster University (McMaster) from 2013 through 2016.SPHR is an alternative name for Students For Justice In Palestine (SJP). For more information, see the McMaster SPHR Chapter Profile.
Azzam Iqbal also helped co-organize a Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement campaign at McMaster in 2015.
As of December 2023, Azzam Iqbal’s LinkedIn profile said she was a “Manager - Equity, Diversity & Inclusion” at Hamilton Health Sciences since June 2023 and had worked there in various roles since 2016. Azzam Iqbal’s LinkedIn said she was studying for a “Doctor of Science, Rehabilitation and Health Leadership” at Queen's University (QueensU) in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, slated to graduate in 2025.
Also as of the same date, Azzam Iqbal’s website said she was working as a registered social worker and psychotherapist.
In August 2023, Azzam’s Iqbal’s LinkedIn said she had a master’s degree in critical social work practice from McMaster in 2017, a bachelor’s degree in social work from Lakehead University (Lakehead) in 2016 and a bachelor’s degree in psychology neuroscience and behavior from McMaster in 2015.
In August 2023, Azzam Iqbal’s LinkedIn bio also said she was “a member of the Board of Director of Contact Hamilton, an organization that provides access to child and youth mental health and developmental services in Hamilton, as well as a Director on the Board of Empowered Kids Ontario, the association representing child development and rehabilitation providers across Ontario.”
As of December 2023, Azzam Iqbal’s LinkedIn said she was located in Hamilton, Ontario.
Incitement
On November 10, 2014, Azzam Iqbal posted a photo on Facebook of the Al Aqsa mosque and wrote that it “has become a place of terror. The West is so concerned with ‘ISIS’ however the IDF is the largest and most well funded terrorist organization in the Middle East. - too bad fighting this cancerous organization doesn't feed their capitalist agenda. #AlAqsaUnderAttack #CulturalGenocide #FreeAlAqsa #EmotionallyDrained.”The allegation that Jews “threaten” to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque has been a pretext for Arab attacks on Jews long before the existence of the modern Jewish state. Such propaganda has led to multiple periods of violence against Israeli civilians.
On November 23, 2014, Azzam Iqbal wrote in a Facebook post: “18 Nov Palestinians kill 4 Israelis in synagogue in Jerusalem” and attempted to justify the murders by listing some alleged earlier incidents: “Israeli settlers storm Aqsa mosque… Israel allows prayer in Aqsa with restrictions… Israel police assassinates Kheir Aldeen after hitting police car -Israeli soldiers enter the Aqsa with guns and gas bombs… Israel attacks moslem women worshippers entering the mosque.”
In the fall of 2014, Palestinian leaders and media incited a wave of violence against Israelis with the lie that Israel intended to desecrate the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. This resulted in the November 18, 2014 Har Nof massacre, in which terrorists murdered six people in a Jerusalem synagogue during morning prayers.
Khayr Al Din Hamdan was killed by Israeli police after running up to a police van with a knife, hitting the windows and attempting [00:00:19] to stab an officer exiting the van.
Azzam Iqbal also claimed in her November 23, 2014 Facebook post that one day before the synagogue murders, a Palestinian bus driver was “hanged” by Israelis in Jerusalem, despite both Palestinian and Israeli coroners’ published finding that the driver committed suicide by hanging.
Hatred of Israel
On May 16, 2021, Azzam Iqbal tweeted in response to a tweet condemning anti-Semitism at an anti-Israel protest: “Suggested Edit : / Expression of solidarity with Palestinian people is unacceptable to me and my donors so I will feed into Isreali propaganda and call it antisemitism.” Her tweet was during Israel’s Operation Guardian of the Walls (OGW) against Hamas. In May 2021, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorists fired over 4,300 rockets from Gaza at major population centers in Israel. Israel responded by launching OGW, carrying out targeted military strikes in Gaza.
Zionism is the belief that Jews have the right to self-determination in their own national home, and the right to develop their national culture.
On June 6, 2017, Azzam Iqbal wrote on Facebook referring to Gal Gadot: “The face of ‘female empowerment’ doesn't mind bombing the brains outta palestinian women and children #smh.” Azzam Iqbal’s post included a graphic encouraging a boycott of the Wonder Woman movie because Gadot “made a conscious choice to publicly endorse the inhumane onslaught on Gaza in 2014…”
Israel commenced Operation Protective Edge (OPE) in July 2014, to stop rocket fire targeting Israeli civilians and to destroy Hamas attack tunnels.
On June 4, 2017, Azzam Iqbal shared a Facebook post by anti-Israel activist and poet Remi Kenazi that called Gadot “a colonizer, an occupier & a supporter of mass violence” and accused her of serving in a “military bombing a trapped population & support[ing] the shelling of an open-air prison.”
Referring to Gaza as an "open-air prison" is a way to delegitimize the United Nations-approved [pp. 39–41] joint Israeli-Egyptian blockade of the Gaza Strip imposed in 2011 to prevent Hamas from acquiring more sophisticated rockets.
On April 27, 2017, Azzam wrote on Facebook: “I'd like to introduce you all to the only ‘democratic’ country in the region!” and linked to a video by AJ+ about Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike.
The video whitewashed Palestinian hunger strikers in Israeli prisons, and featured Khader Adnan, a senior member of the terrorist organization Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ). PIJ is reportedly backed by Iran and has killed dozens of Israelis in suicide bombings and other attacks.
Azzam Iqbal wrote: “If you are a citizen of the UK ... Sign away and share with friends
.” The UK government responded to the petition by affirming its “recognition of Israel’s right to take proportionate action to defend itself…”On December 22, 2014, Azzam Iqbal wrote on Facebook accusing McMaster of endorsing “the academic efforts of an apartheid state” by participating in a trip to collaborate with Israeli universities. Azzam Iqbal accused McMaster of “partnering up with institutions that are complicit with a government that is constantly violating basic human rights.”
Azzam Iqbal’s post claimed that “the vast majority of Israeli intellectuals and academics have either contributed directly” or were complicit through their silence to Israel’s “oppression of the Palestinian People” and claimed Israel was a “haneous [sic] regime” that carried out the “indiscriminate murdering of innocent civilians.”
Anti-Israel Activism (SPHR, BDS)
On May 25, 2021, Azzam Iqbal tweeted: “I have been working with @RunForPalestine to distribute lawn signs in support of Palestinian human rights…” The signs said: “We Stand for Human Rights #FreePalestine / #Ongoing Nakba.”The term “Nakba” is generally translated as “catastrophe” in Arabic, referring to the outcome of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It is a term often used to delegitimize the creation of the State of Israel by defining it as a catastrophe.
In the same thread, Azzam Iqbal tweeted accusing politicians of “mislabeling of Palestinian resistance as antisemitism and excusing apartheid as ‘self-defence’ in support of Israeli propaganda.”
In May 2021, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorists fired over 4,300 rockets from Gaza at major population centers in Israel. Israel responded by launching “Operation Guardian of the Walls (OGW),” carrying out targeted military strikes in Gaza.
On January 18, 2021, in a Facebook post by McMaster MSA quoting Azzam Iqbal reflecting on her time at McMaster, Azzam Iqbal said: “...mobilizing as a community to pass the BDS movement was iconic. It was such an emotional year but it showed me that when the Muslim community comes together, we can do great things Alhamdullilah.”
On March 24, 2016, Azzam Iqbal wrote on Facebook: “It has been exactly one year since we passed the Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions movement at McMaster university! 622 voting yes, versus 28 no. Quite possibly one of the best days of my life, second to my birth and the day I discovered kit kats.”
On March 24, 2015, Azzam Iqbal posted on Facebook a photo of herself and other students at McMaster holding up voting cards in favor of BDS and wrote: “We did it !!!! / #WeSaidYestoJustice #WeSaidYestoPeace #WeSaidYestoBDS / love you guys with all my heart fisabeelilah🩷”
On March 23, 2015, the McMaster Student Union (MSU) voted to pass a BDS motion endorsed by McMaster SPHR and other student groups.
On the same date, ahead of the meeting, Azzam Iqbal wrote on Facebook: “I'm just gonna jam in my room, incapable of sleep anticipating the vote tomorrow ! See you all there is a #VoteYEStoBDS McMaster BDS.”
On March 22, 2015, Azzam Iqbal set her Facebook cover photo to a banner urging students to “vote YES to BDS” at the general assembly.
On March 18, 2015, Azzam Iqbal wrote on Facebook: “On Monday I will Vote Yes to BDS… to suggest that this oppressive apartheid regime would respond to anything but economic loss, is preposterous…”
Azzam Iqbal indicated on Facebook that she attended Israeli Apartheid Week events held on March 10 and March 4, 2015.
Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) is presented as “an international series of events that seek to raise awareness of…Israel’s settler-colonial project and apartheid system over the Palestinian people” and build support for the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.
Azzam Iqbal indicated on Facebook that she attended a March 18, 2013 IAW event hosted by McMaster SPHR.
SJP
SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.
The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.
SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.
SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.
SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.
Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.
BDS
The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.
One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”
Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”
In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”
The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.
BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.
The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.
Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.
BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
