Hanine Hassan

Overview

Hanine Hassan [Suad Hanine Shatou] has glorified the terrorist organization Hamas and honored terrorists. She also equated Israel to Nazi Germany, demonized Israel andspread hatred of America.

Hassan endorsed violent protesters, promoted anti-Israel agitators and is a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

In 2015, she was affiliated with Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) chapter at Columbia University (Columbia) (CSJP).

Prior to 2013, Hassan received: [00:00:13] a“Masters in Political Science and Linguistics'' and was also a researcher at “Euromid Observer for Human Rights”.

As of September 2020, she was listed as a Ph.D. candidate  in Columbia’s department of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies (MESAAS), since 2014. Also as of September 2020, Hassan indicated on her Twitter bio that she was “PhD candidate” at Columbia.

As of the same date, she was reportedly a “Teaching Fellow” at MESAAS. Hassan’s research reportedly focuses on the “long-term effects of humiliation as a tool of oppression by Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.”

As of September 2020, Hassan had over 7,400 Facebook “Followers.”

Glorifying Hamas

On December 14, 2014, Hassan posted to Facebook: “On the 27th anniversary of the creation of Hamas, the streets of Gaza city are jammed as Qassam brigades march in commemoration of latest Israeli genocidial [sic] attack on the Gaza Strip. Spokesperson of Qassam Brigades promises to stand firm in the face of Zionists and to serve the Palestinian people. Long live the resistance. Long live Palestine.”

Hamas is a designated terrorist organization by the European Union, Canada, Australia, the United States and Israel.

The Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades is the armed wing of Hamas.

On December 17, 2014, Hassan posted to Facebook: “The EU General Court has ordered that the Palestinian party Hamas be removed from the EU’s terror blacklist. I wonder when the Europeans will finally put the real terrorist and the one they sponsor, Israel, on their blacklist. #Palestine.”

On March 15, 2015, Hassan interacted with Hamas’s official Twitter account and wrote: “.@HamasInfoEn Thank you for your reply and for engaging with people. Not only Westerners need answers, Palestinians too. #AskHamas.”

On February 13, 2017, Hassan posted to Facebook: “Palestinian Resistance party Hamas announced on Monday that it has chosen Yahya Al-Sinwar as its new leader in the #Gaza Strip...Al-Sinwar was sentenced to life in Israeli dungeons...Who better to represent a segment of the besieged Palestinians than a former Palestinian prisoner in Israeli dungeons? #Palestine #Resist #Zionism.”

Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar publicly thanked Iran in May 2019 for providing his terror group the rockets it used to strike deep into Israel. Sinwar reportedly said on live TV: “Itan provided us with rockets, and we surprised the world when our resistance targeted Beersheba.”

Honoring Terrorists

On March 7, 2020, Hassan shared a Facebook post from CSJP’s Facebook page that commemorated Basel Al Araj and wrote: “My son’s name is Bassel. This is the story of a Palestinian that lives on #باسل [#Basel] Bassel’s portrait is in Bassel’s bedroom, and when he grows up I will tell him the story of a courageous young man who educated his people about their fight for freedom #Palestine.”

Basel Al Araj was killed on March 6, 2017, in a shoot-out with Israeli troops during an arrest raid. He had been suspected of belonging to a terror cell planning to carry out attacks on Israeli targets. Two M-16 assault rifles and an improvised Carlo-style submachine gun were found inside his home.

On December 13, 2018, Hassan glorified Hamas operatives Saleh Barghouti and Ashraf Na’alwa on Facebook. She posted an image of them and wrote: “For Palestine and justice, they sacrificed themselves🇵🇸.”

On December 9, 2018, Saleh Barghouti, son of Hamas leader Omar Barghouti, shot and wounded seven civilians during a drive-by shooting at a bus stop outside of the Jewish community of Ofra. Among the injured was a pregnant woman, whoseprematurely delivered baby died a few days later. On December 12, 2018, Barghouti was killed while trying to escape during an arrest raid. Hamas claimed Saleh as one of its operatives and hailed Barghouti a “martyr.”

In October 2018, Ashraf Na’alwa killed a 28-year-old Israeli woman and 35-year-old Israeli man in a terror attack at an Israeli industrial area. Another person was injured in the attack. Na’alwa died in a shootout with Israeli forces in December 2018.

On April 18, 2017, Hassan promoted an article on Facebook that was written by terrorist Marwan Barhghoutti, titled: “Why We Are on Hunger Strike in Israel’s Prisons” to Facebook. Hassan wrote: “[This is the article that has made ‘Israel’ cringe for the past 48 hours - Let's keep on sharing it] #PalHunger #PrisonersDay.”

Terrorist Marwan Barghouti was sentenced to five consecutive life terms for some of his crimes, including his role in the Sbarro Cafe bombing. In 2017, he initiated the hunger strike by Palestinian prisoners known as the “Dignity Strike.” He headed the Palestinian Authority (PA) terrorist Tanzim force and founded the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, which carried out many terror attacks against Israeli civilians.

On October 4, 2015, during the “Knife Intifada” Hassan posted an image of Fadi Alloun to Facebook and wrote: “Fadi was shot dead this early morning by Israeli occupation forces...Keep in mind that both Israeli soldiers and Israeli settlers share the same Euro-Zionist mentality #Palestine.”

In October 2015, there was an upsurge in violence across Israel incited by Palestinian political and religious leaders. The wave of stabbings, known as the “Knife Intifada,” was characterized by young Palestinians throughout the country stabbing and attempting to stab Israeli civilians.

Fadi Aloon was shot by Israeli security forces after he stabbed a 15-year-old Israeli boy. Several hours before the attack, Aloon posted “Either martyrdom or victory” on his Facebook page.

On December 23, 2013, Hassan posted a photo of terrorist Samer Issawi to Facebook and captioned it: “#Palestine:#Samer_Issawi .. #فلسطين:#سامر_العيساوي.

Samer Issawi is a member of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) who received a 26-year prison sentence in 2002. During the second intifada, Issawi manufactured and distributed pipe bombs and, in several incidents, fired indiscriminately on Israeli civilian vehicles.

Equating Israel to Nazi Germany

On November 13, 2019, Hassan posted to Facebook: “#Israel , that white European settler colonial and racial project, has slaughtered 26 Palestinians in less than 48 hours in the #Gaza Strip. Nazi style, burning people alive. #GazaUnderAttack.”

In November 2019, Israel launched Operation Black Belt to stop Palestinian rocket attacks from Gaza into Israel. The attacks were carried out in response to Israel’s elimination of Baha Abu al-Ata [Bahaa Abu Al-Atta], a senior commander of terror group Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) who was reportedly planning new terror attacks.

On April 14, 2019, Hassan posted to Facebook: “#Gaza is a death camp. Death and suppression technology is ‘the Jewish Nation's’ single greatest export and Gaza is the human laboratory where Israeli arms manufacturers fine-tune their wares on the bodies, psyches and spirits of Palestinians. It is a wretched existence that spares none of the two million prisoners in that #concentrationcamp.”

On July 26, 2014, during Israel’s Operation Protective Edge (OPE), Hassan posted to Facebook: “This is what occupation means. This is how Israel savagery and barbarism looks like. This is what Zio-Nazis do... Shujaia, in our minds and in our hearts. As for the fascists, your day will come.”

Israel commenced OPE in July 2014 to stop rocket fire targeting Israeli civilians and to destroy Hamas attack tunnels.

The term "Zio" is a common derogatory reference to Zionists, as well as an often-used anti-Semitic slur among white supremacists.

On May 3, 2013, Hassan posted to Facebook: “Humbleness and respect towards all Palestinian workers who have to spend every morning at checkpoints being yelled at and dehumanised by nazis with rifles for decades now.”

Demonizing Israel

On August 6, 2020, Hassan posted to Facebook: “Israel is like that serial pedophile who can’t cure from molesting children and would do anything to infiltrate that playground again.”

On March 13, 2020, Hassan posted to Facebook: “Israel has forcefully imposed a siege on the Gaza Strip since 2007, that’s over 13 years living under the worst human conditions, while attempting to survive a virus named ‘Israel’. Unfortunately, Israel isn’t a virus you can wash away with soap.”

On January 23, 2020, as the fifth World Holocaust Forum was held in Jerusalem where  heads of state and world leaders convened to remember the Holocaust and warn of rising antisemitism, Hassan posted to Facebook: “Don't celebrate #Holocaust memorial Day on stolen land whose inhabitants you have slaughtered, exterminated, deported, and imprisoned #Whiteness.”

On the same date, Hassan posted to Facebook: “All white settlers, from Charles of Britain to Alexander of the Netherlands, from Macron of France to Netanyahu of Poland, speaking in Jerusalem about the victims they murdered and the new ones they're gradually exterminating #Jerusalem #Palestine #whiteness.”

On November 13, 2019, during Operation Black Belt, Hassan posted to Facebook: “When will Israeli terrorism, sponsored by the American and European governments finally come to an end? When will whiteness learn to respect and allow brown lives to prosper far away from their evilness and greed? #GazaUnderAttack...”

On May 5, 2019, Hassan posted to Facebook: “#Israel has slaughtered 18 Palestinian civilians, including a baby and a toddler in the last 24 hours! Fully sponsored by the European governments 🇪🇺 #GazaUnderAttack.”

Terror organizations Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) in Gaza fired over 600 rockets at Israeli communities on May 4-5, 2019. Four Israelis were killed and dozens more were injured.

Hassan’s Facebook post referred to the death of a baby called Layla Al Ghandour.

On May 24, 2018, Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry said it removed eight-month-old Layla al-Ghandour’s name from a list of people killed by Israeli troops. The child reportedly died from tear-gas inhalation during the 2018 “March of Return,” though it was later revealed that the child had a pre-existing medical condition.

In June 2018, al-Ghandour’s cousin reportedly admitted that Hamas paid the family to claim the baby was killed by Israeli tear gas, rather than a fatal blood condition that runs in the family.

On November 18, 2014, Hassan posted to Facebook “Israel wants to provide ‘security’ to its people by ethnically cleansing, dispossessing and raping Palestinians day in day out.”

On July 28, 2014, during Israel’s Operation Protective Edge (OPE), Hassan posted to Facebook: “To every freaking European who keeps denying Israel's genocide and keep on repeating this BS about coexisting and about remaining civil! Israelis are invading boat Zionists, ALL OF THEM ARE SETTLERS!! And you know what's NOT CIVILIZED AT ALL?”

Spreading Hatred of America

On March 25, 2019, Hassan posted to Facebook: “Dear European boat-invading settlers, both in settler America and Israel, the Golan Heights are Arab Syrian lands.”

On September 25, 2014, Hassan posted to Facebook: “The ugliest face of American ...policies of imperialism...exploitation, slavery, labor camps, starvation, genocide and white supremacy are the essence of the state of Israel. All the ugliness that American and European governments have to offer have been concentrated in their dual efforts to create the state of Israel...they created a monster that reflects their convictions.”

Endorsing Violent Protests

On March 30, 2019, the one year anniversary of the start of violent protests on Israel’s border with Gaza, Hassan posted to Facebook: “Oh settlers, Do we scare you when we march? When we march back to our stolen homes?Oh settlers why are you so afraid of the marching boots yearning for return?...Do we scare when the earth recognizes our sound?Settlers settlers go home #MarchingBackHome #LandDay #Palestine.”

On March 30, 2018, some 30,000 Palestinians in Gaza approached Israel’s border to take part in “Land Day Protests” or the “March of Return.” The violent demonstrations were instigated by Hamas on the Israeli-Gaza border. Participants declared their intention to harm Jews across the border under the pretext of “peaceful resistance.”

March participants sent scores of kites bearing explosive devices across Israel’s border to burn Israeli crops and homes. Rioters also made numerous attempts to breach Israel’s border fence, which caused the Israeli Defense Forces to respond with live fire.

Agitators also threw Molotov cocktails, firebombs, shot firearms and threw rocks under the cover of smoke from burning tires.

The violent riots during the “March of Return” continued into 2019 and included armed protesters using gunfire, penetrating Israeli territory, launching incendiary kites into Israel and throwing IEDs, hand grenades and Molotov cocktails. Some of the attacks were carried out by Hamas operatives.

Promoting Anti-Israel Agitators

On December 13, 2019, Hassan endorsed anti-Israel British politician Jeremy Corbyn on Facebook and wrote: “The only decent honorable politician Europe has had in a long long time. #Corbyn.”

Jeremy Corbyn, a British politician and leader of the Labour Party, has repeatedly referenced terror organizations Hamas and Hezbollah as “friends,” shared platforms with extremists and anti-Semites and compared Israel’s government to ISIS.

On February 24, 2019, Hassan published an opinion piece in MEE titled: “On Ilhan Omar and the white liberal feminists.” Hassan defended U.S. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar “for exposing the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s influence, lobbying efforts and money in US politics. She also added: “Omar should never have had to apologise for telling the truth.”

Ilhan Omar was elected to the U.S. Congress in 2018. In February 2019, top Congressional leaders denounced Omar for tweeting anti-Semitic remarks. She has also demonized Israel and endorsed BDS, including introducing a pro-BDS resolution in the U.S. Congress.

The stated mission of AIPAC is to “strengthen, protect and promote the U.S.-Israel relationship in ways that enhance the security of the United States and Israel.”

In July 2019, Omar sponsored H.Res. 496, referred to as a “pro-BDS” resolution, which Omar described as “an opportunity for us to explain why it is we support… the BDS movement.”

On February 12, 2019, Hassan posted to Facebook: “Dear Ilhan Omar, you should never have to apologize for telling the truth on how Zionism functions.”

Hassan responded to a comment on the Facebook post and wrote: “...these signs are exposing the double standards of Congress to a wider audience and might lead to the ebbing of power of the Israel lobby.”

Supporting BDS

On February 23, 2020, Hassan posted to Facebook: “As much as i was looking forward to seeing this film, NO to producers that normalize with Israeli Apartheid. Arab Zionists are as guilty and responsible and should be help accountable as any other Zionist #BDS.”

Proponents of the “anti-normalization” policy seek to police all interactions between Israelis and Palestinians and shut down all conversations and interactions perceived as being ideologically unaligned with their own agenda. They believe “liberal Zionist” dialogue with Palestinians “normalizes” entrenched power dynamics. This policy was originally dictated by the BDS National Committee (BNC), which prioritized the “Monitoring & Rapid Response” against interactions that recognize or cooperate with “Israel’s regime.”

Hassan’s Facebok post referred to a film titled: “Arab Blues” that was screened in Jerusalem in February 2020, as part of the first “Middle Eastern Film Week” in Israel.

On January 25, 2019, Hassan posted to Facebook: “Great win for the #BDS movement but I hope she turns down the snowflakes though! Hassan’s Facebook post linked to an article titled: “Birmingham Civil Rights Institute Reaffirms Award for Angela Davis.”

The article referred to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI), which reportedly “reversed its decision to honor” Davis with an award due to her support for BDS. The BCRI ultimately apologized and honored Davis with the award.

On July, 27, 2018, Hassan posted to Facebook: “Why don't countries, like South Africa, Ireland, Spain, Holland...whose citizens are banned and deported from Israel, respond to by [sic] denying entry to all Israelis, or at least settlers and soldiers?! #BDS #Nederland.”

On September 4, 2014, Hassan shared to Facebook a graphic promotingBDS and wrote: “Be an active citizen. Read this guide on how to make an imact [sic] by joining the boycott of Israel. These are very small steps that will hardly affect your daily life but that will have a huge impact... Divest, Boycott and Sanction Apartheid Israel #BDS...”

On March 30, 2014, Hassan posted to Facebook a photo of vegetables labeled in French as Israeli produce, and commented: “When you come across this in France, and you know it's made with blood! Boycott, Divest and Sanction Israeli colonialism #BDS #Apartheid.”

SJP Activism

On March 24, 2015, Hassan featured as a speaker on a panel for a CSJP event alongside anti-Israel activist Joe Catron.

Joe Catron has glorified terrorists from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), has expressed support for the terrorist organization Hezbollah and spread incitement.

The event, which was moderated by anti-Israel professor Hamid Dabashi and took place during Israel Apartheid Week (IAW), was titled: “Media, Solidarity, and Palestine.”

Dabashi has spread anti-Semitic conspiracy theories and equated Israeli policies with ISIS and Nazi Germany. In 2004, Dabashi was investigated following accusations of anti-Semitism made by Jewish students at Columbia University.

Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) is presented internationally as a “series of events that seeks to raise awareness of…Israel’s settler-colonial project and apartheid system over the Palestinian people.” One of its goals is to build support for the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement. IAW has been renamed Palestine Awareness Week.

Anti-Semitism at Columbia 2016-2017

A 2017 report by AMCHA Initiative found that Columbia, which includes Barnard College (Barnard), had the highest overall anti-semitic activity (35 incidents) in 2016, the highest rate of incidents of anti-Semitic expression (23 incidents) and the highest rate of BDS activity on campus (22 incidents).

The AMCHA Initiative documents anti-Semitism at U.S. colleges, using “the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) and the U.S. State Department definitions to identify” anti-Semitic incidents.

Also in 2017, Columbia was listed as third in the Algemeiner newspaper’s “Annual List of the Most Challenging North American Campuses for Jewish Students.” In 2016, the Algemeiner listed Columbia as the worst campus.

CSJP Demonizing Israel 2015

In December 2015, CSJP promoted a video, originally produced by Al-Jazeera, that referred to Israel’s security fence as “The Apartheid Wall.” The video also suggested that a non-binding, advisory opinion on the security fence issued by the International Court of Justice is binding international law.

Israel’s security barrier, 97 percent of which is a low chain-link barrier, was built as a deterrent to Palestinian terror attacks. The concrete portions of the fence were built in response to Palestinian sniper attacks.

On November 17, 2015, CSJP protested opposite an event hosted by Aryeh: Columbia Students Association for Israel, titled: “Israel Week.” CSJP members held signs accusing Israel of apartheid and ethnic cleansing.

In March 2015, CSJP’s yearly Israel Apartheid Week (IAW) featured the building of a mock “Apartheid” wall on campus, meant to demonize Israel’s security barrier.

CSJP BDS Campaign 2016

On February 1, 2016, Columbia SJP and Columbia/Barnard JVP launched a joint divestment campaign on Facebook, titled: “Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD).”

The campaign was launched with a petition and inaugural event titled: “BDS 101,” scheduled for February 4, 2016.

CUAD’s Facebook post stated that the campaign was “embedded in the larger BDS movement.”

CUAD also described the campaign in its Facebook post as a “call for the University to divest its stocks, funds, and endowment from companies that profit from the State of Israel's ongoing system of settler colonialism, military occupation, and apartheid law.”

CUAD said in its Facebook post that the campaign targeted companies including Caterpillar, Hyundai Heavy Industries, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Hapoalim, Boeing and Lockheed Martin. CUAD said that by failing to divest from these companies, Columbia was supporting: “continued occupation of and assaults against the Palestinian people,” by Israel.

CSJP’s Banner Controversy at Barnard 2014

In March 2014, Columbia SJP organizer Jannine-Masoud Salman made a large banner that was hung at the entrance of Barnard college. The banner read: “Stand for Justice, Stand for Palestine” and featured a map of Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, with no internal borders, colored uniformly green.

The banner was reportedly removed after “students, their parents and alumni” said it made them “feel uncomfortable and unsafe in the space” and that it gave the impression Barnard was “endorsing SJP's message that Israel as a Jewish state does not have the right to exist.”

SJP

SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.

The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.

SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.

SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.

SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.

Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
