Aleq Abdullah
Overview
Aleq Abdullah [A.M. Abdullah/ Aleq Jaffery] has spread hatred of Israel and promoted anti-Israel propaganda as an activist with Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at Columbia University (Columbia) (CSJP), in 2010.Abdullah was the 2010-2011 events coordinator of the Muslim Students Association (MSA), at Columbia University (Columbia) and reportedly the senior advisor for MSA in 2012.
As of March 2021, Abdullah was listed as an Emergency Medicine Resident in the “Resident Class of 2022” at Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, New Jersey.
As of the same date, Abdullah was listed as a 2018 graduate of the New York Medical College (NYMC) School of Medicine. Also as of March 2020, Abdullah’s resume said she graduated from Barnard College (Barnard) in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science. Barnard is part of Columbia.
In 2012, Abdullah was the reportedly secretary of Turath the Arab Students Association of Columbia and Barnard. In November 2012, Abdullah was the “Co-Chair of: Columbia University’s first-ever Muslim writers symposium” organized by The Muslim Protagonist student organization.
In February 2012, Abdullah was a member of Columbia’s Chaplain Council.
Spreading Hatred of Israel
Abdullah wrote an article in the Columbia Spectator, originally published on March 9, 2010 and updated on March 27, 2013, titled “The Politics of Fear.”In the article, Abdullah criticized students who protested Columbia SJP for building a mock apartheid wall, meant to represent Israel’s security barrier, during the group’s Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) 2010. IAW 2010 was held on campus from March 1 - 14, 2010. Abdullah reportedly attended IAW 2010 and held a sign that quoted Mahatma Gandhi.
Israel’s security barrier, 97 percent of which is a low chain-link barrier, was built as a deterrent to Palestinian terror attacks. The concrete portions of the fence were built in response to Palestinian sniper attacks.
Abdullah wrote: “This fear is a well-worn tactic of defenders of harsh Israeli policy against Palestinians. Israeli politicians use it over and over to justify measures such as… adamant scrutiny at checkpoints.”
Israeli checkpoints were built to prevent terror attacks, such as suicide bombings, against Israel's civilian population.
Abdullah continued: “The problem with this tactic is that it is effective...The picture painted is that of an innocent Israeli meeting his or her end by the cruel, inhumane actions of a ruthless Palestinian.”
Abdullah also wrote that she held up a poster during the IAW 2010 demonstration on campus: “I toted my neon-green poster with pride, the graffiti-like writing spelling out Mahatma Gandhi's famous quote: ‘What is going on in Palestine today cannot be justified by any moral code of conduct.’"
Promoting Anti-Israel Propaganda
On December 11, 2012, soon after Operation Pillar of Defense (OPD), Abdullah posted on Facebook regarding a controversial flier circulated by the Columbia University Marching Band (CUMB) to promote “Orgo Night” on campus.“Orgo Night” is an annual Columbia event held on campus during final exams when CUMB performs in the Butler Library.
In November 2012, Israel launched OPD, a defensive operation against Hamas in Gaza. The operation was launched to stop Hamas rocket attacks on Israeli civilians.
The CUMB flier included an image of a female stripper with text that read: “Gaza Strip: everyone wants a piece.” On December 13, 2012, CUMB was admonished by Kevin Shollenberger, Dean of Student Affairs for Columbia College, in a student-wide email in which he called the fliers in “poor judgment and poor taste.”
On December 11, 2012, Abdullah wrote on Facebook: “YO CUMB, what exactly do you find sexy about the gaza strip? ….maybe it's this smokin' picture below, showing an 11-month-old child murdered by air strikes in his father's arms. anyway, hit me up if you'd like to let me know just what you found so hot about combining rape culture with genocide. XOXOXOXOX.”
In her Facebook post, Abdullah attached a picture of Jihad Masharawi weeping while holding his dead 11 month-old-son. The widely publicized image referenced false Hamas reports, circulated by mainstream media, that Masharawi’s baby was “murdered” by an Israeli airstrike. The United Nations later revealed (p.19) that the child was killed by a stray Hamas rocket fired at Israel.
SJP
SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.
The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.
SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.
SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.
SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.
Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.
MSA
The MSA was established by members of the Muslim Brotherhood in January 1963 at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, with the goal of "spreading Islam as students in North America." A 2004 FBI investigation uncovered an internal Muslim Brotherhood document in which a brotherhood leader identified the MSA as "one of our organizations."
The MSA reportedly has “nearly 600 chapters” located in the United States and Canada, and is “the most visible and influential Islamic student organization in North America,” boasting conferences, special events, publications, websites and other activities.
The organization includes a number of previous chapter presidents with explicit links to terrorist groups. Included are al-Qaeda cleric Anwar al-Awlaki (Colorado State University), Somali al-Shabaab militant leader Omar Shafik Hammami (University of South Alabama) and Pakistani Taliban recruiter Ramy Zamzam of the MSA's Washington, D.C. council.
