Suzanne Adely
Overview
Suzanne Adely is an outspoken supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement. She is also a member of Al-Awda New York (Al-Awda NY) — having been involved with group since at least 2001.
Adely has also promoted and supported events co-sponsored by New York City SJP (NYC SJP).
Adley was a scheduled speaker at the National Students for Justice in Palestine (NSJP) Conference held at GMU on November 4-6, 2016. She was allocated an "Intergenerational Plenary movement" slot, alongside Randa Wahbe, Andrew Kadi and Garrick Ruiz.
On August 27, 2016, Adely tweeted "60,000 American Jews live as illegal violent, white supremacist settlers in the West Bank."
Adely is a co-chair of the National Lawyers Guild International Committee and co-convener of US Labor for Palestine. She graduated from the City University of New York School of Law (CUNY Law) in 2010.
Defending Anti-Semitic Cartoons
On June 23, 2015, the Middle East Monitor tweeted a cartoon depicting an octopus devouring a flotilla travelling to Gaza. The octopus bore an Israeli flag on its forehead with a swastika replacing the flag’s Star of David.
The U.S. State Department has recognized that likening Israel to Nazi Germany is a form of modern anti-Semitism relative to Israel.
Adely defended the cartoon, tweeting "how is the cartoon anti-semitic? use of Nazi symbol? Israel behaves very much as the Nazi party did."
Embracing Violence and Cheering Anti-Semitism
On October 5-6, 2015 Adely promoted on Facebook and Twitter a rally held at the Israeli consulate in New York — co-sponsored by a number of Israel-hating organizations, including NY4Palestine and American Muslims for Palestine (AMP). The rally urged support for a "Day of Rage" called for by “Palestinian forces.” The same day, NYC SJP posted a “statement of solidarity” with the rally, featuring a rock-throwing Palestinian, with the caption “Let the Intifada pave the way for People’s war! [sic.]”
The “Days of Rage” in October of 2015 were heralded by Hamas as the advent of a new intifada. They directly resulted in the deaths of Israeli civilians by shootings, stabbings and car rammings.
The day after the rally, Adely commented that in a Facebook post that “the Zionists didn't know what hit them.”
On May 16, 2016, Adely posted her support on Facebook for another NYC SJP co-sponsored event, titled “Nakba Day March for Resistance and Return.” At the march, held the previous day, NYC SJP members incited against Jews who emigrated from New York to Israel.
Scripted chants, distributed before the rally, were recited by agitators, who screamed – for the destruction of Israel. After bellowing “Intifada Intifada” and “5-6-7-8 Smash the Settler Zionist State”, the demonstrators also yelled: We don’t want no two-state [solution]; we want ‘48!” — and “There is only one solution; Intifada, revolution.”
Protesters at the rally held signs which read: “Israel = Racism and Genocide,” “FREE PALESTINE From The River To the Sea” and “End Racist Occupation From NYC To Palestine,” RESISTANCE until Return & Liberation.” Wanted Terrorist Benjamin Netanyahu for Crimes Against Humanity & The Planet” and “RESIST Zionist Imperialism.”
Promoting Terrorist Rasmea Odeh
On September 9, 2014, Adely posted a photo on Facebook of herself and a friend posing with convicted terrorist-murderer Rasmea Odeh. Adely commented that they were “two of the Arab women I admire the most.”
Odeh was a military operative with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), an internationally designated terrorist organization. In 1969, she masterminded a bombing that killed two university students in a Jerusalem supermarket. Odeh also attempted to bomb the British consulate.
Odeh confessed, in a highly detailed account, the day following her arrest. In a 2004 documentary, one of Odeh’s co-conspirators directly implicated her as the mastermind.
In 1970, an Israeli court tried and convicted Odeh for her involvement in both bombings and sentenced her to life imprisonment. However, Odeh was released 10 years later, in a prisoner swap and emigrated to the United States. In 2017, Odeh was deported to Jordan and stripped of U.S. citizenship, after admitting to immigration fraud.
Advocating for Release of Terrorists
On April 17, 2016, Adely posted on Facebook a graphic in which all of Israel was colored in a Black and White Keffiyeh. Superimposed on the graphic was text reading “April 17th Prisoner Day Free All Palestinian Prisoners.”
Adely's call to free “all Palestinian prisoners” made no exception for the many convicted terrorists being held by Israel.
Propagating Hunter SJP’s Hatred of Israel and America
On May 2, 2016, Adely shared photos on Facebook from a May Day rally event featuring Hunter SJP. The event description claimed "Israeli settler-colonialism cannot be talked about without the role of fellow-imperialist United States, the genocide of Black and Brown people at the hands of the police, and the racist oppression against undocumented people."
The same day, Hunter SJP shared an NYC SJP blog post written for the rally that conjured anti-Semitic themes, stating: ”This May Day, we denounce Israel, we denounce the United States, and we denounce global capitalism and its highest form, imperialism.” The post also alleged “Israel sustains itself and its crimes through the aid of global imperialist powers…”
Slandering Holocaust Survivor Elie Wiesel
On July, 2 2016, the day of Elie Wiesel's death, Adely tweeted — “Ellie [sic.] Wiesel exploited history and openly supported the slaughter of Palestinian children & civilians. Nothing Nobel or Peaceful about that.”
Adely’s words echoed those of anti-Semitic journalist Max Blumenthal, who said that “Elie Wiesel went from a victim of war crimes to a supporter of those who commit them.” Hillary Clinton rejected Blumenthal’s insult to Weisel as “offensive, hateful, and patently absurd statements.” U.S. President Obama in a statement on Wiesel's death called him “the conscience of the world.”
Supporting Anti-Semitic Politicians
On September 24, 2016, Adely posted an article on Facebook announcing that British Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn had been re-selected, with the comment "How can I join the Labour Party?"
Jeremy Corbyn, a British politician and leader of the Labour Party, has repeatedly referenced terror organizations Hamas and Hezbollah as “friends,” shared platforms with extremists and anti-Semites and compared Israel’s government to ISIS.
Applauding Disruption and Inciting Harassment of NYC City Council Members
On September 9, 2016, Adely tweeted an article in support of "Activists" who disrupted a NY City Council hearing to protest Anti-BDS resolution, #1058-A — a bill “condemning all efforts to delegitimize the State of Israel and the global movement to boycott, divest from, and sanction the people of Israel.”
Several protesters — including NYC SJP members Nerdeen Kiswani, Izabela Qafa and Dan Cione — stood up, holding up Palestinian flags or posters of Palestinian children and chanted "Zionism is racism," “Israel is a terrorist state” and “Free Palestine,” before they were escorted out by security guards. Over the following 20 minutes, the protesters repeated these tactic numerous times. After the event, Kiswani posted a video of the hearing on Facebook.
Also on September 9, Adely posted on Facebook a list of NY City Council members sponsoring the resolution. She urged readers to "Flood them with calls! Call out their Racism!"
On September 13, 2016, Adely tweeted “Urgent: Protest #NYC Council racist attack on #BDS and free speech: Share this Now!” However, the vote to approve the resolution passed the next day.
Accusing Israel of Apartheid and Genocide
On April 16, 2016, Adely was a key speaker on behalf of US Labor for Palestine in a workshop titled "Building a Labor Movement Against Apartheid: Union Solidarity with Palestine." The workshop was based on the premise that Israel practices Apartheid.
On September 19, 2016, Adely posted on Facebook a section of a New York Daily News article quoting herself regarding anti-BDS resolution 1058A, claiming — misleadingly — that boycotting Israel is a "basic and fundamental" right. She then proceed to make a false comparison between the Apartheid regime in South Africa in 1980’s and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in Israel.
On November 21, 2012, Adely forwarded a post on Facebook quoting Michael Letwin following a ceasefire of Operation Pillar of Defense (OPD), saying "the people of Gaza and all of Palestine have once again courageously resisted U.S.-sponsored racism, colonialism, apartheid, and genocide. They -- and the entire Arab Revolution -- deserve our utmost respect, and our support for an end to occupation, for refugees' return, and for a Free Palestine, from the River to the See, with equal rights for all."
SJP
SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.
The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.
SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.
SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.
SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.
Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.
BDS
The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.
One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”
Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”
In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”
The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.
BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.
The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.
Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.
BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
