Monica Murillo

Overview

Monica Murillo (Mónica Cristina Murillo Parra) has defended the Hamas terror organization, glorified a terrorist and demonized Israel. Murillo has also spread hatred of Israel on social media.

Murillo was a student activist with Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at John Jay (John Jay SJP) College of Criminal Justice (John Jay), part of the City of New York University (CUNY), in 2014.

Murillo has also expressed support for the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Murillo served as President of the College Democrats of America from 2013 - 2014.

As of July 2019, Murillo’s LinkedIn said she worked in “Homefinding” at Coalition for Hispanic Family Services, since August 2018.

As of the same date, her LinkedIn page said she graduated in 2016 from John Jay with a bachelor's degree in Forensic Psychology.

As of July 2019, Murillo used the name “Mónica Cristina” on Facebook.

Defending Hamas

On August 14, 2014, during Operation Protective Edge (OPE), Murillo represented [00:02:25] John Jay SJP and spoke at an event titled: “Stop Israel’s Ongoing War Crimes Against the People of Gaza.”

Israel commenced OPE in July 2014 to stop rocket fire targeting Israeli civilians and to destroy Hamas attack tunnels.

Murillo said [00:05:29]: “Others have said it. I am not a Hamas fan, I am not a Hamas cheerleader,” she said, "but I understand that they are resisting. They are putting up the fight that others do not have the heart to, that don’t have the courage to and we should not be condemning them for this."

Murillo also said [00:04:38] “We must support resistance. We must support every single movement that's working for freedom and for liberty and for justice in Palestine and for justice anywhere in the world.”

Glorifying a Terrorist

On January 27, 2016, Murillo retweeted a tweet that glorified Rasmea Odeh as “a Palestinian Hero.”

Odeh was a key military operative [00:02:08]with the terrorist group the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). In 1969, Odeh masterminded a PFLP bombing that killed two college students in a Jerusalem supermarket. Odeh also attempted to bomb the British consulate.

Odeh confessed, in a highly detailed account, the day following her arrest. In a 2004 documentary, one of Odeh’s co-conspirators directly implicated [00:10:53] Odeh as the mastermind.

In 1970, an Israeli court tried and convicted Odeh for her involvement in both bombings and sentenced her to life imprisonment. However, Odeh was released 10 years later, in a prisoner swap and emigrated to the United States.

On November 10, 2014, a Michigan federal jury convicted Odeh for immigration fraud because she failed to disclose her prior conviction and life sentence on her immigration application. On March 12, 2015, she was sentenced to 18 months in prison.

In 2017, after an appeal and a lengthy court battle, Odeh admitted to immigration fraud, was stripped of her U.S. citizenship, deported to Jordan and banned from re-entering the U.S.

Also on January 27, 2016, Murillo retweeted a tweet that said: “Powerful words of Dr. Angela Davis a vocal supporter of #Justice4Rasmea who has met Rasmea multiple times.”

Spreading Hatred of Israel

On July 7, 2015, Murillo tweeted: “@Snapchat oppssss guess you're regretting the genocidal BS story now, don't u? #TelAviv #noyoumeanpalestine #checkamap #readabook #palestine.”

Also on July 7, 2015, Murillo tweeted: “Typical Tuesday of pink washing, victim blaming, claiming ‘self-defense’ and being hateful. #TelAviv #noyoumeanpalestine #palestine4ever .”

“Pinkwashing” is a claim that Israel advocates manipulate the LGBTQ community in order to garner support for Israel.

On the same date, Murillo retweeted a tweet that said: “How bout you #showtherealstory, the other side of the wall! The one where people get killed everyday, ON "A TYPICAL TUESDAY!" #TelAviv .”

On August 14, 2014, speaking at a public forum at Cooper Union, NYC, Murillo said [00:01:17]: “Evo Morales President of Bolivia said: ‘Israel is a terrorist state.’ He took the words right out of my mouth.”

On July 13, 2014, Murillo commented on a Facebook post by John Jay SJP President, Susanne Abdelghafar, saying: “To add to that...Israel has very quickly started to force feed not just the idea of a ‘jewish state’ but of ZIONISM. These tweets are CLEAR AND OBVIOUS examples of the hate towards any NONWHITE jew that is instilled in young individuals in Israel.”

Murillo continued: “This is just as disgusting as nazism. It's not that Susie, Katherine, or I are anti-Semitic. It breaks my heart that there are any deaths in this conflict BUT the underdog in the situation is clear. It's a systematic oppression and an enforcement of zionism that has lead to the conflict. It is the disproportionate amount of money, weapons, power, and countless palestinian victims that has lead to Palestinian suffering.”

On July 9, 2014, Murillo attended an anti-Israel event endorsed by John Jay SJP in NYC, titled: “Emergency Protest: Rally Against US Funding of Israeli Terror! Rally for Accurate Media Coverage of Israeli Terror!”

At the event, Murillo was featured in a photo on Facebook next to John Jay SJP President Susan Abdelghafar, who held a sign that said: “I CAN’T BELIEVE WE’RE STILL PROTESTING THIS S**T. #66 YEARS.”

On June 25, 2014, Murillo retweeted a tweet that said: “The United States gives $3.5 billion to Apartheid Israel every year, enough to feed half the world's hungry children.”

On May 4, 2014, Murillo retweeted a tweet by anti-Israel poet Remi Kanazi that said: “Zionist hashtags are essentially fun twitter prompts. They're inevitably taken over by critics of apartheid, occupation, siege & blockade.”

On May 25, 2013, Murillo tweeted: “The fact that a child can draw an israeli flag better then a circle tells me a lot about ur parenting #downwithzionism #freepalestine.”

On April 28, 2013, Murillo tweeted: “Here I was thinking youre Arab you f**king zionist. Ugh #artdtudioproblems.”

SJP Activism

On February 12, 2016, Murillo was featured in a group photo on John Jay SJP’s Facebook page. John Jay SJP described the group as “Some Executives and members of John Jay SJP at yesterday's Club Fair!”

On February 1, 2016, Murillo updated her Facebook cover photo to a banner that said: “JOHN JAY HASN’T BEEN TRUE TO ITS MISSION. SJP WON’T STAND FOR IT ANY LONGER.”

On November 18, 2015, Murillo reportedly spoke at a John Jay SJP panel event, called: “Latin American Solidarity with Palestine.”

On September 12, 2015, Murillo retweeted a tweet that said: “John Jay #sjp will be having its first general meeting (s) on September…” The tweet linked to a post on Instagram by fellow John Jay SJP activist, Izabela Qafa, that promoted the event.

On October 8, 2014, Murillo participated in a “die-in” at that was organized by John Jay SJP, where students lay on the ground covered in sheets stained with red paint to resemble blood.

At the “die-in”, John Jay SJP activists expressed [00:01:02] support for Hamas and accused [00:01:23] Israel of “genocide” during OPE.

Chants at the “die-in” reportedly included: "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free."

“From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free” is a chant calling to dismantle the State of Israel. It has also been employed by Hamas leader Khaled Mashal to call for the replacement of Israel with an Islamic state.

One SJP activist held [00:01:47]a sign that called for Intifada while another sign accused  [00:01:47] Israel of apartheid.

Since the early 2000s, the term “intifada,” which translates from Arabic as “uprising” or “insurrection,” has carried the connotation of violence.

On October 21, 2014, John Jay President Jeremy Travis issued an announcement to all students, alumni, faculty and staff, stating that he was "deeply troubled, both personally and professionally, by recent reports that Jewish students at John Jay College have felt intimidated and harassed on our campus.

In response, on November 16, 2014, John Jay SJP issued an open letter to President Travis calling his letter “the latest in a series of small acts of repression John Jay’s SJP has faced recently.”

On July 25, 2014, Murillo spoke [00:01:03] at an anti-Israel event, called: “International Day of AL-QUDS (Protest & March for Palestine).” John Jay SJP was listed as one of the organizations supporting the event.

On July 20, 2014, Murillo posted to her Facebook page a video of John Jay SJP President Sussane Abdelghafar addressing a crowd and demonizing Israel.

Murillo commented: “Because we will never stop. Because we are never done. Because resistance is existence. Because Palestine and Gaza never get a break. Susie Abdel, My brain and beauty lover, we will look back at this video one day and remember the struggle. Palestine WILL BE FREE.”

On April 25, 2014, Murillo retweeted a tweet that said: “Support NYU@SJP’s right to free speech as they face harassment & smears for their Palestine solidarity activism change.org/petitions/nyu-/…”

The tweet linked to a petition defending NYU SJP for slipping mock eviction notices r under the doors of over 2000 students living in two student residence halls at NYU dorm rooms, at night.

NYU spokesman John Beckman released a statement condemning the manner in which the flyers were distributed saying it was not consistent with the university’s tradition of professional discourse.

Supporting BDS

On August 14, 2014, addressing a public forum at Cooper Union, NYC, Murillo said [00:02:07]: “We have been hearing speakers all night talk about Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions. If we were to pool all our money together and see how much we’re spending on products that support Israeli settlements we would probably all sit here and cry.”

Murillo continued [00:02:33] “We need to be conscious, we need to be aware of where the money is going to when we buy Coke, when we buy Revlon, when we buy Victoria Secret, when we buy all these Zionist products, is going to, because if we are buying these we are just as guilty as the CEOs who are supporting Israel.”

Murillo also said [00:02:57]: “We need to divest from all and any single organization, institution, anything that is Zionist, whether it’s academic or any other way, shape or form. And we need to sanction. Israel needs to pay for the disgrace of war crimes they are committing.”

On April 15, 2016, Murillo retweeted a tweet that said: “Please sign and RT petition to @Airbnb STOP listing stolen homes http://ow.ly/4mKtrG #BDS

In April 2019, Airbnb reversed its policy of banning listings in Jewish communities in Israel’s West Bank.

SJP

SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.

The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.

SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.

SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.

SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.

Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
