Susie Abdelghafar
Overview
Susie Abdelghafar [Susan Abdelghafar] has expressed support for terrorists, spread hatred of Israel and served as the Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) president at John Jay College (John Jay) in 2014. The chapter is known as John Jay SJP and she also attended the 2014 National SJP (NSJP) conference.Abdelghafar has also expressed [00:04:37] support for the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement. In a 2015 Facebook post, Abdelghafar wrote she was “part of” the Muslim Student Association (MSA).
As of June 2023, Abdelghafar’s LinkedIn profile said she was a Human Resources Coordinator for the New York City Criminal Justice Agency since January 2021. Her LinkedIn described her as “a Professional in people resources and communication as well as Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.”
Also as of May 2023, Abdelghafar was listed as a “Case Manager” for the New York City Criminal Justice Agency (CJA) on the CJA website.
As of the same date, Abdelghafar’s LinkedIn said she graduated from John Jay with a bachelor's degree in social sciences & political science in 2017. John Jay is a part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system. Also in 2017, she graduated from CUNY’s Baccalaureate for Unique and Interdisciplinary Studies program with a bachelor’s degree in “Applied Science.”
Abdelghafar’s LinkedIn also said that John Jay gave her “Licenses & certifications” in being a “Peer Counselor” in 2016 and “Opioid Overdose Intervention” in 2014.
In 2019, Abdelghafar’s Facebook page said she was a “Mental Health Counselling Intern” at Safe Horizon and co-organizer of “Rouh: Mental Health” at Malikha.
According to a May 2018 CUNY press release, Abdelghafar received a 2018 Fulbright U.S. Student Program award to “teach English, and provide expertise abroad for the 2018-2019 academic year through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program” in Malaysia.
As of May 2023, Abdelghafar went by the name “Susie” on her Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and LinkedIn accounts.
Support for Terrorists
In November 14, 2014, Abdelghafar promoted an event on Facebook in support of Rasmea Odeh called: “EMERGENCY Action in Solidarity with Rasmea Odeh - NYC.” She wrote: “Only a few hours away!! Be there to fight for justice!#freerasmea #justiceforrasmea.”Odeh was a key military operative [00:02:08]with the designated terrorist organization Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). In 1969, she masterminded a supermarket bombing that killed two college students and attempted to bomb the British consulate in Jerusalem. In 1970, Odeh was sentenced to life imprisonment for her role in both bombings, but was released after 10 years. She later moved to the United States but was stripped of U.S. citizenship, deported to Jordan and banned for life from reentering the U.S. for immigration fraud.
Also on November 14, 2014, Abdelghafar featured in an SJP College of Staten Island (CSI SJP) Facebook photo from the event where she stood in the middle of the protest. The post read: “Susie Abdel demanding justice and freedom for Palestine from Zionist Israeli occupation.”
On January 12, 2016, Abdelghafar featured in an online interview where she was asked to talk about “terrorism as a method of resistance.” In response, she said: “The media loves to call Hamas a religious terrorist group, but it's a political group that was elected by the people in Gaza.”
Abdelghafar continued: “People who say Hamas is a terrorist group don't even know what they’re saying. If people are truly fighting for Palestinian liberation, they’ve got to get rid of the dream of two states. There’s no way. It’s socially, culturally, politically impossible to have a two state solution.”
Abdelghafar concluded: “These people in Palestine are simply resisting. There’s always a reason for people engaging in violent acts. In Palestine, the suicide bombings were at a point a form of resistance.”
Among Palestinians and anti-Israel activists, the term “resistance” can be a euphemism for nationalistic terror. It is often used to excuse or even glorify anti-Israel and anti-Semitic violence.
Hatred of Israel
In the same January 12, 2016, interview, Abdelghafar was quoted saying that: “Zionism is not only about creating a Jewish state. It’s about creating a white Jewish state. It’s a very racist ideology.”Zionism is the belief that Jews have the right to self-determination in their own national home, and the right to develop their national culture.
In October 2015, there was an upsurge in violence across Israel incited by Palestinian political and religious leaders. The wave of stabbings, known as the “Knife Intifada,” was characterized by young Palestinians throughout the country stabbing and attempting to stab Israeli civilians.
The allegation that Jews “threaten” to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque has been a pretext for Arab attacks on Jews long before the existence of the modern Jewish state. Such propaganda has led to multiple periods of violence against Israeli civilians.
“IOF” stands for Israeli Occupation Forces, a derogatory name used by anti-Israel activists to demonize Israel’s army in place of its official name, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
On July 13, 2014, during Israel’s Operation Protective Edge (OPE) against Hamas, Abdel responded to a comment on her Facebook post, saying: “Understood Petra Maddi, however, it does not change the fact that Israel has been committing an apartheid state for decades now…”
Israel commenced OPE in July 2014 to stop rocket fire targeting Israeli civilians and to destroy Hamas attack tunnels.
Anti-Israel Activism (SJP, BDS)
On November 19, 2015, Abdelghafar participated as a speaker in a panel discussion organized by the SJP chapter at Brooklyn College, which is part of CUNY. The event was titled: “Is there a Palestine Exception to Free Speech on College Campuses?”On October 24-26, 2014, Abdelghafar attended the 2014 SJP National Conference at Tufts University.
On October 8, 2014, Abdelghafar participated in a “die-in” that was organized by John Jay SJP, where students lay on the ground covered in sheets stained with red paint to resemble blood.
On the same day, prior to the die-in, Abdelghafar posted a photo of a sign she held at the “die-in” and commented: “Get ready for tomorrow Bloodhounds!! 1st Floor Common Area 1:30pm, be there to stand for Justice!”
At the die-in, SJP activists expressed [00:01:02] support for Hamas and accused [00:01:23] Israel of “genocide” during OPE.
Activists reportedly chanted: "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free."
“From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free” is a chant calling to dismantle the State of Israel. It has also been employed by Hamas leader Khaled Mashal to call for the replacement of Israel with an Islamic state.
Another activist held up a sign that read: “WHEN PEOPLE ARE OCCUPIED RESISTANCE IS JUSTIFIED.”
John Jay University President Jeremy Travis issued an announcement shortly after the “die-in,” stating that he was “deeply troubled… by recent reports that Jewish students at John Jay College have felt intimidated and harassed on our campus.”
In response, John Jay SJP issued an open letter to President Travis calling his letter: “the latest in a series of small acts of repression John Jay’s SJP has faced recently.”
In October 2014, Abdelghafar spoke at an event organized by SJP at Seton Hall University titled: “Open Mic Night: Battling Systems of Oppression from Ferguson to Palestine!”
On August 24, 2014, Abdelghafar spoke [00:00:18] at an anti-Israel event at Cooper Union in New York City where she said [00:00:34] that she was the president of John Jay SJP. The video was titled: “Stop Israel’s Ongoing War Crimes Against the People of Gaza- Susie Abdelghafar.”
On July 17, 2014, Abdelghafar attended a protest that was reportedly “chaired” by John Jay SJP and titled: “Emergency Protest: Stop The War on Children! From Gaza to U.S./Mexico Border.” Abdelghafar held up a sign that read: “I CAN’T BELIEVE WE STILL PROTESTING THIS SH*T. #66years.”
Chants at the protest reportedly included: “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” and “Intifada, Intifada, long live the Intifada,” “Existence is resistance” and “BDS-BDS-BDS-BDS.”
The term “intifada,” which translates from Arabic as “uprising” or “insurrection,” carries the connotation of violence. Palestinian intifadas waged against Israel have been marked since 1987 by hundreds of hijackings, shootings, stabbings, bombings and suicide missions.
On July 8, 2014, Abdelghafar was featured in two John Jay SJP photos described as “John Jay SJP's new e-board.”
SJP
SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.
The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.
SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.
SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.
SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.
Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.
BDS
The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.
One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”
Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”
In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”
The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.
BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.
The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.
Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.
BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
MSA
The MSA was established by members of the Muslim Brotherhood in January 1963 at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, with the goal of "spreading Islam as students in North America." A 2004 FBI investigation uncovered an internal Muslim Brotherhood document in which a brotherhood leader identified the MSA as "one of our organizations."
The MSA reportedly has “nearly 600 chapters” located in the United States and Canada, and is “the most visible and influential Islamic student organization in North America,” boasting conferences, special events, publications, websites and other activities.
The organization includes a number of previous chapter presidents with explicit links to terrorist groups. Included are al-Qaeda cleric Anwar al-Awlaki (Colorado State University), Somali al-Shabaab militant leader Omar Shafik Hammami (University of South Alabama) and Pakistani Taliban recruiter Ramy Zamzam of the MSA's Washington, D.C. council.
