On October 9, 2023, Shakya tweeted photos from a protest held in Toronto and wrote: “Massive turnout in support of #palestine organized by @palyouthmvmt in #Toronto. So inspiring. So much love and courage. Proud to attend. I have & will always stand with #palastine until it is free. #EndIsraeliApartheid #FreePalestine.”
On October 9, 2023, two days after Hamas invaded Israel and massacred over 1,200 Jews, PYM held a rally in Toronto celebrating the attack. A PYM Facebook post promoting the rally called Hamas “our heroic resistance in Gaza” and celebrated “over 30 Zionist hostages captured, the fall of settlements surrounding Gaza.”
The same PYM post said the attack “shaped a new precedent for our national liberation struggle and we remain steadfast in our right to resist by any means necessary.” PYM called on activists “to uplift and honour our resistance and our martyrs…and celebrate our steps closer to liberation!”
Protesters participated in the pro-terror chants [00:00:17]: “Intifada, intifada! Long live the intifada!” and “Be-ruh be-dam nifdik ya Aza [with spirit and blood we will redeem Gaza]!” They also chanted: “From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free!,” a call for Israel’s destruction. One speaker said [00:00:20]: “When we say ‘Allahu Akbar’ it is a declaration of our celebration for our resistance and its victory against their occupier.”
Shakya’s tweet from the protest included a photo of protesters holding signs that said [photo 2]: “75 YEARS OF STANDING OUR GROUND / ZIONISM COULDN’T STAND ONE DAY” and “EXIST / RESIST / RETURN.”
Zionism is the belief that Jews have the right to self-determination in their own national home, and the right to develop their national culture. Zionism is a core part of the identity of most Jews.
On the same date, Shakya posted [slide 2] a video on Instagram from the protest of activists chanting: “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.”
Shakya also posted on Facebook photos from the protest, including a sign that said: “DISMANTLE THE APARTHEID STATE / REGIMES ESTABLISHING ONGOING SYSTEMATIC PRACTICES OF DISPOSSESSION, OBSTRUCTION AND POLICE VIOLENCE WILL FACE RESISTANCE NOT JUST TODAY, BUT DAY AFTER DAY AGAIN AND AGAIN.” His post included a video of protesters chanting [00:00:04]: “Hey hey, ho ho, Zionism has got to go.”
On October 10, 2023, Shakya tweeted: “While all nationalisms r problematic, the state of #Israel was founded on #colonial legacies & #Zionism & is one of the most violent (per)mutations of #nationalism. As reminded by Edward Said & Frantz Fanon, our shared goal is to abolish nationalism & envision bold new alternatives.”
On October 12, 2023, Shakya tweeted at U of T’s Department of Geography and Planning and School of Public Health: “@geo_UofT @UofT_dlsph , it will be great if you can release a similar statement in support of faculty and student groups providing critical analysis on Palestine/Israel.”
The tweet referred to a statement by U of T’s Department of Historical and Cultural Studies that said it is: “...essential for scholars to situate the current [Israel-Hamas] war in its broad historical contexts, including those of settler colonialism, US imperialism in the Middle East, and global movements for Indigenous rights…”
On October 22, 2023, Shakya posted a video on Facebook from an anti-Israel protest in Toronto and wrote: “Thousands at the rally for Palestine. This is growing to be one of the most important global anti-apartheid movements. I encourage everyone (including your kids) to be part of this world changing movement.”
On November 4, 2023, Shakya tweeted in response to a tweet by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau supporting Israel’s right to self-defense: “Israel’s apartheid in #Palestine & seize of #Gaza violates so many international laws. A state with openly genocidal goals should never have the right to defend itself…”
On November 11, 2023, Shakya wrote in a Facebook post: “...[the] Palestinian cause is the most important ‘litmus test’ for the world. Please be bold and make sure you know where you stand on this cause and let everyone know. And teach your kids.”
Shakya’s post continued: “If you are unsure, let me know and I will work with you and your family to create an awesome reading list by Palestinian and progressive Jewish advocate scholars. All of them highlight that there are no two sides to this. Palestinians, Jews and the whole world has a single shared cause and that is to end #IsraeliApartheid and #genocide…”
