Sarah Alsilwi

Overview

Sarah Alsilwi [Sarah Al-Silwi] has spread hatred of Israel, promoted incitement and expressed support for terror financiers.

Alsilwi was an activist with Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at The City College of New York (CCNY) from 2018 to 2021.

For more information, see the CCNY SJP Chapter Profile.

Alsilwi was affiliated with Within Our Lifetime (WOL) in 2021.

WOL is an activist group in New York City founded by Nerdeen Kiswani. Until February 2018, WOL was known as a branch of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), going by the name NYC SJP. WOL’s “Points of Unity” states: “We defend the right of Palestinians as colonized people to resist the zionist occupation by any means necessary.”

Alsilwi was affiliated with the Muslim American Society of New York (MAS NY) in 2020.

Alsilwi was listed as the vice president of finance for the CCNY Undergraduate Student Government (USG) for the 2020-2021 academic year.

Alsilwi graduated [pp. 21-22] with a bachelor’s degree in political science from CCNY in 2021.

As of May 2023, Alsilwi’s LinkedIn page said she was a “College Assistant” at a “Student services corporation.” As of the same date, Alsilwi co-hosted a podcast called “Companions of the Message.”

Also as of May 2023, Alsilwi’s LinkedIn said she was located in the Bronx, New York. However, on October 11, 2022, Alsilwi tweeted: “I’ve been living in Yemen for over a year now…” On May 4, 2023, Alsilwi indicated on Facebook that she was living in Yemen.

Hatred of Israel

On May 13, 2021, Alsilwi tweeted: “May Allah destroy Israel.”

Alsilwi wrote her tweet during Israel’s Operation Guardian of the Walls (OGW) against Hamas.

In May 2021, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorists fired over 4,300 rockets from Gaza at major population centers in Israel. Israel responded by launching OGW, carrying out targeted military strikes in Gaza.

On November 14, 2018, Alsilwi tweeted: “If you can’t see that Israel is oppressive and cruel and just pure evil, there is literally no way that we can be friends.”

On December 7, 2017, Alsilwi tweeted: “They’ve taken our homes, but Israeli COLONIZERS will not take Jerusalem. FREEEEE PALESTINEEE!!”

Alsilwi also promoted a protest held that day in New York City’s Times Square to oppose the American decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and to move the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Promoting Incitement

On May 12, 2021, Alsilwi shared a post on Facebook that said: “Al-Aqsa is a red line. Stand up for the Ummah’s dignity. #AlAqsaUnderAttack #DefendJerusalem #protectalaqsa.”

The allegation that Jews “threaten” to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque has been a pretext for Arab attacks on Jews long before the existence of the modern Jewish state. Such propaganda has led to multiple periods of violence against Israeli civilians.

The post featured a photo of the Dome of the Rock with text that said: “#PROTECTALAQSA #DEFENDJERUSALEM / NO EID GREETINGS WITHOUT AL-AQSA! / Every year local public officials and candidates wish the Muslim community Eid greetings in our houses of worship. This year we demand that public officials seeking to wish Eid Greetings to also condemn Israel’s violence against the third holiest and most beloved spaces of worship for Muslims globally.”

Supporting Terror Financiers

As of May 2023, Alsilwi’s Instagram biography read: “...#FreeHLF5 [Holy Land Five] Listen to our podcast!!! …”

The Holy Land Five (HL5) were five individuals associated with the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development (HLF) indicted for funneling funds to Hamas in the guise of humanitarian aid. The men were all convicted and sentenced in 2009 to federal prison terms ranging from 15 to 65 years.

Hamas has been designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S., Canada, European Union, Israel and other countries. Founded in 1987, it has killed thousands of Israeli civilians through mass shootings and suicide bombings. Hamas has also kidnapped children, families and the elderly and held them hostage in Gaza. It has desecrated [slide 2] dead bodies and launched numerous rocket attacks against Israeli civilians.

On December 24, 2020, Alsilwi shared a Facebook post that said: “ABDULRAHMAN ODEH OF THE HLF5 IS OFFICIALLY OUT OF PRISON!” Alsilwi wrote about the post: “alhamdulilah [praise be to God] 😭.”

Anti-Israel Activism (SJP, WOL)

On May 16, 2021, Alsilwi was tagged in an Instagram photo posted by then CCNY SJP president Hebh Jamal at a WOL rally held a day earlier titled: “NAKBA 73: DEFEND PALESTINE FROM THE RIVER TO THE SEA.”

The term “Nakba” is generally translated as “catastrophe” in Arabic, referring to the outcome of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It is a term often used to delegitimize the creation of the State of Israel by defining it as a catastrophe.

“From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be Free,” is a chant used [00:02:52] to call for the elimination of the State of Israel.

At the rally, Jamal led [00:00:12] protesters in the chant: “Intifada, intifada! Long live the intifada!”

Since the early 2000s, the term “intifada,” which translates from Arabic as “uprising” or “insurrection,” has carried the connotation of violence.

On May 12, 2021, during OGW, Alsilwi shared a post on Facebook that said: “NYC responded to Andrew Yang and Eric Adams today by standing with Palestine, not Israeli terrorism.” The post included a photo from a May 11, 2021, WOL rally titled: “EMERGENCY RALLY FOR PALESTINE.”

At the protest, a group of anti-Israel protestors shouted at a group of pro-Israel counter-protestors. One anti-Israel protestor wearing a red hoodie forced [00:00:39] his way past the police and punched [00:00:41] a pro-Israel counter-protestor.

On March 12, 2021, Alsilwi posted on Facebook: “Since 2002, thousands of US law enforcement officials have trained with Israeli military forces in the context of the ‘War on Terror,’ learning about Israeli methods and technologies of surveillance, racial profiling, and suppression of protest.”

Alsilwi’s post included a flyer for an SJP CCNY event titled: “ENDING THE DEADLY EXCHANGE: The United States and Israel Connection.” The event featured anti-Israel activist Eran Efrati who is the director of “Campaigns and Partnerships” for Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP).

In 2017, JVP launched the “Deadly Exchange (DX)” campaign, which accused American Jewish organizations of promoting human rights abuses. JVP also released a video that blamed [00:04:04] U.S.-based Jewish organizations for violence that occurs against Black and Brown communities, immigrants and activists in the U.S.

On December 7, 2020, Alsilwi promoted on Facebook a December 10, 2020, CCNY SJP event titled: “Palestinian Political Prisoners.” The event was hosted [00:00:01] by then CCNY SJP student activist Husam Kaid. Anti-Israel activist Osama Mor spoke during the event, which was held online using Zoom.

On November 30, 2020, Alsilwi promoted on Facebook a CCNY SJP event titled: “The Future of Palestine Under Joe Biden.” The event featured anti-Israel activist Sumaya Awad and anti-Israel professor Hafsa Kanjwal.

On November 15, 2018, Alsilwi participated [photo 2] in a CCNY SJP protest titled: “PROTEST WAR CRIMINAL AMBASSADOR AND THE THE [sic] FACE OF ISRAEL’S ILLEGAL SETTLEMENTS VISIT TO CITY COLLEGE.”

The protest was in response to an event featuring Israeli diplomat Dani Dayan. During the protest, then CCNY SJP president Hebh Jamal led [00:00:35] the chant: “Dani Dayan, you can’t hide! We charge you with apartheid!”

SJP

SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.

The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.

SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.

SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.

SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.

Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.

WOL

Within Our Lifetime (WOL) is a pro-terror activist group in New York City dedicated to Israel’s destruction within the lifetime of its members.

Acts of violence and physical confrontations with police have frequently occurred at WOL protests and marches. WOL uses harassment campaigns to target pro-Israel organizations or companies that do business with Israel, making it a part of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Multiple activists who have either burned Israeli flags or led chants at WOL rallies were later jailed for violent anti-Semitic hate crimes, including Saadah Masoud and Waseem Awawdeh. In Masoud’s case, he received 18 months in jail for an anti-Semitic assault at an April 2022 WOL rally and two other anti-Semitic assaults in 2021.

WOL promotes “resistance” against Israel “by any means necessary,” calls to “Globalize the Intifada,” spreads incitement and idolizes [00:34:06] Palestinian terrorists like Leila Khaled and others at rallies and online events.

WOL was founded by Nerdeen Kiswani and Dan Cione in 2015. Kiswani is a frequent speaker at WOL rallies where she has promoted terrorism against Israelis and called for the death of Zionists. She has also provided support for Masoud and other activists following their arrests.

WOL began as the New York City chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), going by NYC SJP, but changed its name in 2018. The group is not found to be registered in any U.S. state as a nonprofit organization under its official name. Nor is there any listing for WOL under its name on the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) website for tax-exempt organizations.
