Awawdeh used a crutch to hit Borgen while verbally abusing him with anti-Semitic slurs.
During the attack, Awawdeh reportedly called Borgen, who was on his way to a pro-Israel rally, a “dirty Jew” and said: “F**k Israel, Hamas is going to kill all of you.”
When interviewed by the New York Daily News after the attack, Borgen reported that his attackers appeared at the corner of W. 48th St. and Seventh Ave. Borgen said: “All of a sudden, I turn around and see someone chasing me.”
Borgen added: “They hit me with fists, kicked me, hit me with crutches, hit me with signs ... They were saying, ‘You dirty Jew, f--- Israel, go back to your country!’”
Following the attack, Borgen reportedly had a concussion and said: “I felt a liquid being poured on my face, and at first I thought I was getting urinated on…”
Borgen continued: “But it turned out I was getting Maced and pepper-sprayed. My face was on fire. That pain was worse than the concussion and all this other stuff that followed.”
Borgen added: “... I have bruises all over my body. I have a black eye. My face is banged up. I’m just sore all over my body. They were kicking me in my ribs, my stomach.”
Awawdeh reportedly told a jailer: “If I could do it again, I would do it again.”

His friends chanted: “Free, free Palestine!!” Video of the event, uploaded to Twitter, showed Awawdeh pumping his arms triumphantly.
On August 3, 2021, Awawdeh entered a plea of “not guilty.” Also, as of October 25, 2022, Awawdeh’s next court appearance for his case, numbered 02138-2021, was scheduled for December 8, 2022.
On January 10, 2023, the New York Sun reported on Awawdeh: “New York DA [District Attorney] Offers Plea Bargain to Alleged Antisemitic Attacker -The man who said he ‘would do it again’ will go to jail for just six months if he pleads guilty under the deal.”
Awawdeh was standing [00:00:11] aboard a moving vehicle from which a firework was thrown [00:00:01] at passersby, burning a woman in Manhattan's heavily- Jewish, Diamond District.
Awawdeh also spat [00:35:04] on a police officer during the counterprotest against the pro-Israel rally in Times Square.
Awawdeh can be seen [00:35:04] in video footage of the rally at center-left, holding a pair of crutches, wearing sunglasses, a red bandana wrapped around his neck, a red, white and green scarf (the colors of the Palestinian flag) wrapped around his forehead and a navy blue t-shirt with text that said “Palestine” with an image of the map of Israel on it.
The anti-Israel activists pushed and eventually breached the barricade erected to separate the pro-Israel rally from the counter-protest.
The anti-Israel activists marched toward the pro-Israel rally, chanting and yelling at the pro-Israel activists. Some stole Israeli flags from some of the pro-Israel activists.
The anti-Israel activists then moved back to their side of the barrier, where they later chanted: “Nazis! Nazis!” at the Israel supporters.
After demonstrators threw projectiles, police removed the barricade and proceeded to arrest several anti-Israel activists. Police declared that the “assembly is unlawful” and demanded the crowd disperse or be arrested. Despite police warnings, some rioters reportedly continued to throw projectiles at police, while others fled the scene.
The police proceeded to arrest [00:03:34] several anti-Israel activists, while Awawdeh fled [00:03:52] the scene.
In video footage of the event, Awawdeh can be seen [00:03:52] center-left in the upper middle part of the screen starting to run with his crutch, located beside two NYPD police officers to his left, wearing white shirts.
Police used bicycles to both disperse the rioters and pursue a number of them. Some rioters overturned [00:12:02] police barricades to create obstacles in the street. Others threw [00:14:16] garbage bags filled with trash onto the street, while still others dragged [00:14:37] traffic barriers onto the street and overturned [00:14:40] fencing.
As police and passersby then tended [00:00:34] to an injured person lying on the ground, anti-Israel activists drove [00:00:19] and walked by shouting abuse from their car windows, while others on the street pushed [00:00:37] people and yelled [00:00:48]: “F**k the Zionists, f**k you!”
Awawdeh then returned on foot [00:01:41] to the scene of the crime, engaging with other keffiyeh-masked anti-Israel activists and screamed: “You’re the gangster, you're the gangster” and then departed the scene.
Awawdeh later fell [00:13:47] over while running with his crutch from the police, who arrested [00:14:11] him when they caught up and found him.
On May 21, 2021, WOL posted two Instagram posts that portrayed the rioters as victims and offered legal support and advice to anyone arrested.
Awawdeh participated [00:01:41] in a WOL-organized rally on May 18, 2021. Awawdeh can be seen [00:01:41] in the background at the far left of the middle of the screen wearing a black t-shirt, a green, white and red headband and walking with a crutch.
Other anti-Israel activists at the rally chanted: “There is only one solution! Intifada Revolution.”
Since the early 2000s, the term “intifada,” which translates from Arabic as “uprising” or “insurrection,” has carried the connotation of violence.
On the same day as the rally, a mob [00:00:01] of anti-Israel activists from the rally, led by WOL activist Saadah Masoud, violently attacked two men, one of whom held an Israeli flag. Awawdeh was also present [00:11:54] at the time of the incident and can be seen in the background wearing the same attire with a crutch, as mentioned above.
Awawdeh participated [00:22:02] with anti-Israel protesters at a May 15, 2021, Nakba day protest organized by WOL in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.
In a May 17, 2021, YouTube video of the May 15 protest, Awawdeh can be seen [00:22:02] walking towards the camera on the right-hand side of the screen, wearing a green, white and red headband, a black jacket and holding a crutch.
Awawdeh led [00:28:07] chants of “إرفع إيدك علّي الصوت، اللي بيهتف مش حٓ يموت الموت ولا وطني[Raise your hand and raise your voice, who shouts never dies, either death or my country].”
Awawdeh can be seen [00:28:07] in the middle of the screen to the right, sitting on an elevated platform behind a Palestinian flag, wearing the same attire mentioned above.
Awawdeh also chanted [00:21:21] with other anti-Israel activists: “From the River to the Sea! Palestine will be free!” He could be seen in the middle of the screen on a raised platform.
Awawdeh also joined in with chanting [00:22:17] “Free! Free! Gaza!” as well as [00:22:24] “Free Free Al Aqsa!” while punching his crutches in the air.
Incitement surrounding Al Aqsa was a leading factor in Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorists firing over 4,300 rockets from Gaza at Israeli population centers from May 10-21, 2021. Israel named the conflict Operation Guardian of the Walls (OGW).
Awawdeh also chanted [00:22:35]: “be-ruh be-dam nifdik ya Aqsa!” while thrusting his crutch in the air atop the elevated platform.
Awawdeh was later featured in an Instagram photo taken at the rally by American model, Bella Hadid, who also attended the rally.
Other protesters at the rally chanted “Israel is a Terrorist state,” as well as “Israel is a crime.”
On December 12, 2020, Awawdeh was reportedly pulled over by the police for “failure to signal.” The police then found Awawdeh had with him a switchblade and pellet gun. Awawdeh was charged with weapons possession and “walked out with a desk appearance ticket.”
Twice in March 2021 and April 2021, Awawdeh was reportedly given desk tickets for driving without a license.
In May 2021, Awawdeh was reportedly enrolled in a college.
As of the same date, Awawdeh went by the name “Waseem Taya” on Facebook and used the handle “@pali_waseem” on Instagram.

As of May 2022, Awawdeh also used the handle “@plo_waseem” on Tiktok and used the handle “@waseemtaya” on ask.fm.
Acts of violence and physical confrontations with police have frequently occurred at WOL protests and marches. WOL uses harassment campaigns to target pro-Israel organizations or companies that do business with Israel, making it a part of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.
Multiple activists who have either burned Israeli flags or led chants at WOL rallies were later jailed for violent anti-Semitic hate crimes, including Saadah Masoud and Waseem Awawdeh. In Masoud’s case, he received 18 months in jail for an anti-Semitic assault at an April 2022 WOL rally and two other anti-Semitic assaults in 2021.
WOL promotes “resistance” against Israel “by any means necessary,” calls to “Globalize the Intifada,” spreads incitement and idolizes [00:34:06] Palestinian terrorists like Leila Khaled and others at rallies and online events.
WOL was founded by Nerdeen Kiswani and Dan Cione in 2015. Kiswani is a frequent speaker at WOL rallies where she has promoted terrorism against Israelis and called for the death of Zionists. She has also provided support for Masoud and other activists following their arrests.
WOL began as the New York City chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), going by NYC SJP, but changed its name in 2018. The group is not found to be registered in any U.S. state as a nonprofit organization under its official name.
