Supporting Violent Protests

On March 27, 2020, Sheikh was featured [slide 4] in a John Jay SJP Instagram photo where he commemorated the March of Return, which began two years earlier.

On March 30, 2018, about 30,000 Gazans approached Israel’s border fence to join in “Land Day Protests,” which were also called the “March of Return.” The march was organized and funded by Hamas as a campaign of violent protests to spotlight the “right of return,” a policy discredited as a means to eliminate Israel.

Most of the Gazans who died between March 30 and April 6, 2018, were identified as terror operatives who were killed while carrying out terrorist attacks, rioting against IDF forces or attempting to breach the border fence between Israel and the Gaza Strip.

March participants sent scores of kites bearing explosive devices across Israel’s border to burn Israeli crops and homes. Participants also attempted to breach the border fence, which caused the Israeli Defense Forces to respond with live fire. Agitators also threw Molotov cocktails and firebombs, shot firearms and threw rocks.

Media reports confirmed [00:00:20] the March of Return protesters’ breaches and attempted breaches of Israel’s border fence, some by armed Palestinians. One Hamas leader declared [00:00:30]: “We will take down the border [with Israel] and we will tear out their hearts from their bodies.”

The John Jay SJP post where Sheikh was featured read: “Two years ago on land day, tens of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza gathered by the illegitimate israeli separation fence demanding the right to return to their homeland….”

Israel’s security barrier, 97 percent of which is a low chain-link barrier, was built as a deterrent to Palestinian terror attacks. The concrete portions of the fence were built in response to Palestinian sniper attacks.

The “right of return” is a Palestinian demand discredited as a means to eliminate Israel. International law mandates no absolute right of return and UN Resolution 194, which defined principles for “refugees wishing to return to their homes,” was unanimously rejected by Arab nations following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.

The John Jay SJP post also said: “Palestinians remain trapped in the most densely populated region in the world, an open-air prison…We demand an end to the blockade in Gaza and an end to all U.S. military aid to Israel…”

Referring to Gaza as an "open-air prison" is a way to delegitimize the United Nations-approved [pp. 39–41] joint Israeli-Egyptian blockade of the Gaza Strip imposed in 2011 to prevent Hamas from acquiring more sophisticated rockets.

Anti-Israel Activism (SJP)

On February 4, 2020, Sheikh was featured [slide 2] in a photo posted to John Jay SJP’s Instagram alongside fellow John Jay SJP activist Gary Singh. The photo was from the annual campus club fair event, where they promoted SJP.

On October 30, 2019, Shiekh was featured [slides 1, 6] in a series of photos posted to John Jay SJP’s Instagram alongside fellow anti-Israel activists Singh, Lena Widdi, Nora Abuhamdeh, Fatma Abdelaal, Hadar Abdelaal, Reihan Ahmed. The photo was from an alumni panel titled: “THE STRUGGLES OF STUDENT ACTIVISM IN POST TRUTH TIMES.”

On September 26, 2019, Sheikh appeared [slide 1] in group photos posted to John Jay SJP’s Instagram from an SJP general meeting. The meeting’s Instagram post included a graphic called “Handala,” a symbol supporting the “right of return.”

On September 5, 2019, Sheikh appeared [slide 6] in a group photo posted to John Jay SJP’s Instagram taken at the annual club fair event, where he promoted SJP on campus.

On March 24, 2018, Sheikh posed [slide 1] in a group photo posted to John Jay SJP’s Instagram. The post was captioned: “Another successful yearbook photoshoot! Students for Justice in Palestine ‘18🇵🇸.”

SJP

SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.

The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.

SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.

SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.

SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.

Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.
