Thomas DeAngelis

Overview

Thomas DeAngelis [Thomas Seweid-DeAngelis] helped shut down a faculty meeting on a college campus, expressed support for terrorists and promoted hatred of Zionists and Israel. DeAngelis also demonized the police and engaged in anti-Israel activism.

DeAngelis is a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

DeAngelis was the secretary of the Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) chapter at Brooklyn College (Brooklyn SJP), which is part of the City of New York University (CUNY), from 2015 to 2016. CUNY is located in New York, New York.

As of January 2024, DeAngelis’s LinkedIn profile said he had been the assistant director of the University Writing Center at St. John’s University (St. John’s) since September 2022. St. John’s is located in Queens, New York.

Also as of January 2024, DeAngelis’s LinkedIn said he graduated from the University of Minnesota (UMN) with a master’s degree in American studies in October 2022.

As of the same date, DeAngelis’s LinkedIn also said he graduated from Brooklyn College with a bachelor’s degree in sociology in 2016.

As of the same date, Angelis’s LinkedIn said he was located in Queens, New York.

Shutting Down a University Event

On February 16, 2016, DeAngelis and fellow SJP agitator, Sarah Aly, were among nine Brooklyn College Student Coalition (BCSC) members whose disruptive behavior prompted the shutdown of a routine Faculty Council meeting on campus.

In a statement regarding the student disruption, Brooklyn University President Karen L. Gould said that the disruptors “made a number of demands on a wide range of topics, including free tuition, campus safety, a faculty contract, and campus diversity. In addition, the students directed hateful anti-Zionist and anti-Jewish comments to members of our community. We find this disruptive behavior unacceptable and the hateful comments especially abhorrent.”

Faculty members reported that the students began chanting anti-Zionist epithets, including “Zionists off campus.” One faculty member said he heard a student call Faculty Council Chair Yedidyah Langsam a "Zionist pig." Langsam said: “once she made that remark” to him he adjourned the meeting.

In an April 5, 2016 article in Haaretz, De Angelis reportedly defended the anti-Zionist language and said: “it’s our way of expressing solidarity with Palestinians’ resistance against the colonialist settlers in Palestine.”

On May 31, 2015, the anti-Israel legal advocacy organizations Palestine Legal and Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) represented Aly and DeAngelis at a disciplinary hearing, where they were ultimately charged and admonished by the university for “failure to comply with lawful directions.”

On December 7, 2016, DeAngelis posted on Facebook a NYPost article, titled: “Colleges aren’t just politically correct — they’re anti-Semitic” and commented: “File this under fake news.” DeAngelis went on to claim that outside counsel, hired to investigate anti-semitism at CUNY, “proved that the claims were largely false and sensationalized.”

The results of outside counsel’s investigation noted: “As a public university, CUNY is limited in the ways that it can respond to hate speech, whether the words are anti-Semitic, racist, anti-Muslim, or anti-LGBT. CUNY cannot punish such speech unless it is part of a course of conduct so pervasive or severe that it denies a person’s ability to pursue an education or participate in University life.”

The investigation’s counsel also said: “But what CUNY cannot punish, it can still condemn. As a general rule ... CUNY’s Administrators and College Presidents have spoken out against anti-Semitic comments. ...That practice must continue; hate speech must be challenged promptly and forcefully lest it breed.”

Support for Terrorists

On May 16, 2018, DeAngelis tweeted: “can't be against armed Palestinian resistance when you want Palestine to be free.”

Among Palestinians and anti-Israel activists, the term “resistance” can be a euphemism for nationalistic terror. It is often used to excuse or even glorify anti-Israel and anti-Semitic violence.

On November 15, 2015, during a wave of stabbing attacks in Israel known as the “Knife Intifada,” DeAngelis tweeted: “Yo these ‘stabbing attacks’ sound just like the hundreds of missiles supposedly fired into israeli lol [laugh out loud]”

Since the early 2000s, the term “intifada,” which translates from Arabic as “uprising” or “insurrection,” has carried the connotation of violence.

The same day, DeAngelis tweeted: “It seems very convenient that the only type of anti-israeli violence is stabbing attacks. Stabbing is seen as barbaric and grotesque.”

On October 8, 2015, DeAngelis appeared in a Brooklyn SJP Facebook post publicizing a Brooklyn SJP “die-in.” SJP said the event was prompted by “recent israeli [sic.] aggression against Palestinians, including the murder of 17-year old Hadeel Al Hashlamoun, and 19-year-old Fadi Alloun in cold blood, execution style.”

Al Hashlamoun (18 years old) was reportedly carrying a knife through a checkpoint and did not respond to orders to step back before she was shot by Israeli soldiers.

Fadi Aloon was shot by Israeli security forces after he stabbed a 15-year-old Israeli boy. Several hours before the attack, Aloon posted “Either martyrdom or victory” on his Facebook page.

Hatred of Zionists

On January 12, 2018, Deangelis tweeted: “I'm confused by zionists in the US who go all out white supremacy in the US but are still proud zionists. You realize zionism is white supremacy right?”

On March 7, 2018, DeAngelis tweeted: “Every university president is Zionist trash.”

On January 22, 2017, DeAngelis tweeted: “I’m still an admin on the fb page for the SJP I was a part of in undergrad and we get the funniest comments on posts from 2-3 years ago lol.” DeAngelis replied to his own tweet and said: “who pays all these zionist trolls.”

In November 2015, DeAngelis co-hosted an event titled: “Million Student March - Brooklyn College,” demanding the abolishment of tuition and cancelation of student debt.

Video footage from the march showed [00:00:10] students chanting “Zionists out of CUNY” at Hunter College, as well as “Intifada! Intifada! Long live the intifada!”

On November 12, 2015, New York City SJP (NYC SJP) published a “Million Student March Statement.” The statement said that student tuition directly funded CUNY’s “Zionist administration” investments “to Israeli companies and companies that support the occupation.”

On May 11, 2018, DeAngelis tweeted: “I didn't read the whole article but this def happens at Brooklyn College. The only time students got in trouble was when Zionist politicians and journalists, CAMERA, and other pro-Israel interest groups forced the school to punish students.”

Hatred of Israel

On January 26, 2018, DeAngelis tweeted: “Im glad you see through it. They use this archaeological stuff to make claims to Israel having been there.”

One way anti-Israel activists spread anti-Semitism is by denying [00:17:45] Jewish history, with the aim of delegitimizing restored Jewish sovereignty, attacking Israel’s legitimacy and portraying Jews as foreign to the Land of Israel.

On November 26, 2018, DeAngelis tweeted: “being critical of whiteness and israel are the only 2 things that get you fired from an academic job.”

Several examples of anti-Semitism given in the IHRA definition relate to Israel. However, the definition states: “Criticism of Israel similar to that leveled against any other country cannot be regarded as antisemitic.” The U.S. State Department adopted the IHRA’s working definition of anti-Semitism in 2016. Thirty-four other countries have adopted the definition as well. Over 40 other countries have adopted the definition as well.

That same day, DeAngelis tweeted about academia: “It also let's you be an a**hole online and still keep your job as long as you arent critical of white people and israel.”

On October 27, 2015, DeAngelis tweeted: “[U.S. Senator Bernie] Sanders still supports aid to Israel (a nation that terrorizes Black jews, refugees, and Black Palestinians) and supports the drone program”

Demonizing the Police

On February 21, 2019, DeAngelis tweeted: “People are really acting like ‘lying’ to the cops is bad as if the cops aren't lying about everything already.”

The same day, he tweeted: “Nothing the police say should ever be taken as fact.”

On October 07, 2017, DeAngelis tweeted: “Blue lives don't matter.”

On March 9, 2017, DeAngelis tweeted: “We need to isolate all cops in all of our lives. They need to feel hated by everyone and unloved by even the people close to them.”

The same day, he tweeted: “Foreal cops deserve no love. You're sad your friend got shot while being a cop?? Oh well you shouldn't be friends with a cop. IDC [I don’t care] at all.”

On April 9, 2016, DeAngelis tweeted: “We know NYPD protects the racist and imperialist interests of the state. Now more of us than ever know the extent of this.”

The same day, he tweeted: “People exposed the uselessness of NYPD as protectors of our safety and worked to expose the true relationship of police to the us in NYC.”

Anti-Israel Activism (BDS)

On October 27, 2015, DeAngelis commented on a photograph on Facebook of CUNY Divestment flyers posted by Within Our Lifetime United for Palestine: “These are great! Would it be possible for someone to send them over so I can distribute them by me?”

DeAngelis indicated on Facebook that he “went” to a workshop on March 2, 2018, at the University of Minnesota (UMN) titled: “BDS, Racial Justice & Pinkwashing in the Trump Era.”

“Pinkwashing” is a claim that Israel advocates manipulate the LGBTQ community in order to garner support for Israel.

The Facebook event description linked to information about “UMN Divest Week” and stated: “As Divest Week @ UMN winds up, come and talk about ways to...work in solidarity with the global BDS movement.”

DeAngelis indicated on Facebook that he “went” to a February 28, 2018, event called: “Why Divestment?” The event was hosted by, among others, UMN Divest, SJP UMN and Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) Twin Cities.

The Facebook event page posted a link for participants to sign a petition supporting UMN Divest’s upcoming launch of a divestment resolution. The page also urged people to enlist the support of wider audiences for the divestment effort.

DeAngelis indicated on Facebook that he “went” to an event on March 5, 2018, titled: “UMN Divest 2018.” UMN Divest 2018 promoted the approval of a divestment referendum which called on the institution to divest from corporations that are “supporting, upholding, and benefiting from the Israeli occupation of Palestine.”

Brooklyn SJP - Supporting Terrorism

On April 28, 2016, Brooklyn SJP shared an AJ+ video on Facebook about Dima Al-Wawi.

12-year-old Al-Wawi was imprisoned for attempting to stab a security guard at the Israeli community Karmei Tzur. Al-Wawi later claimed she intended to kill the guard and hoped she would be killed in the process. “I was dreaming that I was going to be martyred,” she said.

On November 2, 2015, Brooklyn SJP co-sponsoreda vigil to support former officers of the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development (HLF) — who were found guilty of funneling $12 million dollars to Hamas.

The Holy Land Five (HL5) were five individuals associated with the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development (HLF) indicted for funneling funds to Hamas in the guise of humanitarian aid. The men were all convicted and sentenced in 2009 to federal prison terms ranging from 15 to 65 years.

On October 8, 2015, Brooklyn SJP staged an anti-Israel “die-in.” On Facebook, the group claimed the event was in solidarity with an international Palestinian “Day of Rage” called “In light of... israeli aggression against Palestinians, including the murder of 17-year old Hadeel Al Hashlamoun, and 19-year-old Fadi Alloun in cold blood, execution style.”

Al Hashlamoun (18-years-old) was carrying a knife through a checkpoint and did not respond to orders to step back before she was shot by Israeli soldiers.

Fadi Aloon was shot by Israeli security forces after he stabbed a 15-year-old Israeli boy. Several hours before the attack, Aloon posted “Either martyrdom or victory” on his Facebook page.

The Brooklyn SJP Facebook post featured a photo album of its “die-in” and referred to another “Day of Rage” event on October 6th — co-hosted by American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), NYC SJP and others who supported a “Day of Rage” called by “Palestinian forces.”

The “Days of Rage” in October of 2015 were heralded by Hamas as the advent of a new intifada. They directly resulted in the deaths of Israeli civilians by shootings, stabbings and car rammings.

On October 8, 2015, Brooklyn SJP posted a graphic showing its support for a “third intifada” and called the wave of terror a “spike” in Palestinian “resistance to Israeli oppression.”

Brooklyn SJP - Demonizing Israel

On November 27, 2015, Brooklyn SJP shared on Facebook a misleading series of maps.

The maps claim that lands once controlled by Britain, Egypt and Jordan as autonomous “Palestinian land” were purportedly stolen by Israel. In February 2016, publisher McGraw-Hill Education recalled copies of a college textbook containing the fraudulent maps. In October 2015, American cable news network MSNBC apologized for airing a similar series of maps and retracted them.

On October 27, 2015, Brooklyn SJP shared an article on Facebook promoting a Palestinian Prisoners Club libel that “40% of Palestinian Children Detained by Israel Sexually Abused; Virtually All Tortured.”

The Facebook photo album of Brooklyn SJP’s October 8, 2015 “die-in” featured a placard claiming Israel’s security fence was an “Apartheid Wall” that was “30 times the length of Manhattan!” and “Twice as high as the Berlin wall!”

SJP

SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.

The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.

SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.

SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.

SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.

Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
