Matthew Kanterman
Matthew Kanterman [Matthew Joseph Kanterman] was arrested at a pro-Hamas encampment at Arizona State University (ASU) during Israel’s war against Hamas terrorists. He also spread hatred of Israel and America in 2023 and 2024. Israel launched the war after the October 7, 2023, terror attacks.
Hamas murdered approximately 1,200 Israelis, injured thousands and kidnapped hundreds more that day. For more information, see the Canary Mission page on Hamas.
On April 27, 2024, Matthew Kanterman was arrested for third-degree criminal trespass at the ASU encampment, which was part of a national movement on college campuses during Israel’s war against Hamas.
The encampments were in support of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.
ASU is located in Tempe, Arizona.
On April 26, 2024, anti-Israel activists and ASU students set up a pro-terror encampment to protest Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza. Activists called the encampment, which was located outside the school’s Old Main building, the “ASU Liberated Zone.”
On April 27, 2024, following two separate warnings to clear out the encampment, Tempe, Arizona, city police and Arizona state troopers entered the campus and arrested approximately 70 people.
Law enforcement officers threw away tents that protesters had pitched. One Jewish student reported receiving death threats for helping the police dismantle the encampment.
The arrestees were subsequently charged with criminal trespass and burglary.
At the encampment, activists joined in the pro-terror chant: “When people are occupied, resistance is justified!”
Activists also chanted: “From the River to the Sea! Palestine will be free!” The chant is used to call for the elimination of Israel.
Other chants included support for BDS: “Disclose! Divest! We will not stop, we will not rest!”
On October 5, 2024, Kanterman posted a photo on Instagram that said: "WAKE UP! / AMERIKKKA IS / KILLING CHILDREN / WITH YOUR TAX DOLLARS."
The term “Amerikkka” uses the initials of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) as a way to demonize America as “fascist or racist.”
On July 2, 2024, Kanterman posted a series of photos on Instagram of anti-Israel signs that said [Slide 1]: "FROM IOF / TO ASU / TO AZ-PD / THEY ALL LOOK / LIKE PIGS / TO ME," and [Slide 4] "RESPecT ExisTeNCe / OR / ExPect ResistANCe."
Anti-Israel activists use the term “resistance” to refer to violence and terror perpetrated against Israeli civilians and their allies. It is used to glorify and encourage anti-Israel and anti-Semitic violence. Anti-Israel activists chant slogans such as: “Resistance by any means necessary!” and “Resistance is justified when people are occupied!” in response to terror attacks.
On November 13, 2023, Kanterman posted on Instagram [Slide 2]: "As a Jewish person it is especially important that we speak out against the genocide and ethnic cleansing that Zionists have been committing against Palestine for the past 75 years as we are no stranger to genocide ourselves. It is important to recognize that the October 7th attacks were a retaliation to a much larger scale genocide enacted by the Israeli government...This horrifying genocide is being funded by the United States. / Join community, spread information, boycott, divest, and sanction. Now is not a time to sit silent. Free Palestine ."
There were over 140 pro-Hamas and anti-Israel college encampments set up in North America, and over 20 more globally, in the spring of 2024. The first began on April 17, 2024, at Columbia University. The encampments were unofficially known as the “student intifada,” borrowing a term associated with terrorist violence.
Protesters harassed Jewish students, blocked Jews from campus facilities and shouted anti-Semitic slogans. They occupied campus grounds, in many cases illegally, caused property damage, violently took over buildings, celebrated terrorism and promoted the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.
Activists set up encampments to oppose Israel’s right to wage war against the Hamas terror group following October 7, 2023, when Hamas murdered approximately 1,200 people, including 32 American and 8 Canadian citizens. Hamas also kidnapped 252 people, including 11 Americans and the bodies of 2 murdered Canadians.
The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by pro-terror activist Omar Barghouti in 2005 to turn “Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.” Barghouti has also called for Israel's destruction and the BDS movement demands would result in that same goal.
BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.
The movement’s most notable achievement has been infiltrating university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments propose resolutions to boycott or divestment from Israel or Israeli-affiliated entities. BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents and pro-terror activism on campus.
