Rana Sobeih

Overview

Rana Sobeih has defended violent protesters, demonized Israel and promoted an anti-Israel agitator on social media. Sobeih was the 2017 Vice-President of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at the University of South Carolina (UofSC) and was active with UofSC SJP from 2016-2018.
As of November 2019, Sobeih’s LinkedIn page said that she was a tutor at Tutor.com since July 2017. Her LinkedIn also indicated that she graduated from UofSC in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature.

Defending Violent Protesters

On April 13, 2018, Sobeih posted a video to Facebook promoting the March of Return, along with a video description that stated: “For the third week in a row Palestinians in Gaza are marching for their right to return.”

On March 30, 2018, some 30,000 Palestinians in Gaza approached Israel’s border to take part in “Land Day Protests,” or the “March of Return.” The march was organized and funded by Hamas as a campaign of violent protests to spotlight the Palestinian demand to “return” to Israel. The “right of return” has since been discredited as a means to eliminate Israel.

March participants sent scores of kites bearing explosive devices across Israel’s border to burn Israeli crops and homes. Participants also attempted to breach the border fence, which caused the Israeli Defense Forces to respond with live fire. Agitators also threw Molotov cocktails and firebombs, shot firearms and threw rocks.

On May 14, 2018, Sobeih posted to Facebook: “Those in power (Israel, the US) celebrate while the marginalized are shot at and murdered for demanding basic rights. I stand with the Palestinian people today and every day🇵🇸."

Sobeih also commented on the post: “Contact your congressional overlords” and linked to a US Campaign for Palestinian Rights (USCPR) tweet that called to “end Israel’s impunity to using excessive force against Palestinians.”

USCPR’s tweet called to “Email your representatives now to demand the US open an investigation into Israel’s unlawful killing of Palestinian demonstrators in Gaza on March 30” and linked to a USPCR petition titled: “US Must Hold Israel Accountable for Great Return March Massacre.”

In May 2018, terror organization Hamas instigated the “March of Return.” Thousands of violent rioters attempted numerous breaches of Israel’s border fence with Gaza, seeking to harm Jews across the border. Media reports confirmed [00:00:20] protesters’ breaches and attempted breaches of the fence, some by armed Palestinians. On May 15, 2018, senior Hamas official Mahmoud Al-Zahhar said the Gaza protests were only a pretext of “peaceful resistance.”

On May 16, 2018, a Hamas senior official, Salah al-Bardawil, stated that 50 out of 62 protesters killed during the May 14 Gaza border protest were Hamas operatives. Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) also claimed that three of its members were killed at the same protest.

Demonizing Israel

On January 16, 2017, Sobeih published an Op-Ed in UofSC’s student newspaper, The Daily Gamecock, titled “Letter: Apartheid lives on” where she claimed that “while apartheid has ended in South Africa, it lives on in Israel — and so does the U.S. tradition of supporting apartheid.”

On February 28, 2017, Sobeih shared to Facebook the “Free Starbucks with Masa Israel,” promoting Israel educational tourism and added: “A cup of coffee isn't worth co-signing Apartheid.”

On December 6, 2017, Sobeih shared a video to Facebook that accused Israel of pinkwashing, adding: “Queer Muslims + Pinkwashing in one episode 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽.”

“Pinkwashing” is a claim that Israel advocates manipulate the LGBTQ community in order to garner support for Israel.

Promoting an Anti-Israel Agitator

On December 22, 2017, Sobeih shared on Facebook a Friends of Sabeel North America (FOSNA) video trailer that promoted Ahed Tamimi. The FOSNA video also called for the release of Tamimi and was part of a campaign that urged lobbying for a Congressional bill designed to end Israel’s ability to detain violent Palestinian minors.

Ahed Tamimi has a long history of physically attacking Israeli soldiers. Tamimi is the daughter of Bassem Tamimi, who is known for exploiting young children as political props in staged confrontations with Israeli soldiers.

UofSC SJP Activism

On November 12, 2016, Sobeih lead UofSC SJP’s 2nd Palestine Cultural night.
During the evening, Sobeih was featured in several photos presenting a poster to attendees, featuring a series of misleading maps known as the “Map That Lies,” with the title: “Is This Ethnic Cleansing?”

The maps claim that lands once controlled by Britain, Egypt and Jordan as autonomous “Palestinian land” were purportedly stolen by Israel. In February 2016, publisher McGraw-Hill Education recalled copies of a college textbook containing the fraudulent maps. In October 2015, American cable news network MSNBC apologized for airing a similar series of maps and retracted them.

On February 8, 2017, Sobeih indicated on Facebook that she would be speaking at UofSc SJP’s event titled: “Palestine 101 Part 1.” The event’s Facebook description added that the teach-in “will cover settler-colonialism.”

On October 3, 2017, Sobeih helped lead UofSC SJP’s 3rd Palestine Cultural night. Sobeih appeared in a photo while on stage, speaking in a microphone to attendees while standing in front of panels that demonized Israel.

The description of the event’s Facebook photo album said: “This year, we focused on Palestinian women” and “to show how much Palestinian women contribute to the resistance.” It also showed that the event featured artistic portraits of Rasmea Odeh and Dareen Tatour.

Odeh was a key military operative with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terrorist organization. In 1969, she masterminded a PFLP supermarket bombing that killed two college students. She also attempted to bomb the British consulate in Jerusalem. Odeh later moved to the United States but was deported to Jordan in 2017 for immigration fraud.

In October 2015, Tatour was placed under house arrest for incitement to violence and for support of a terrorist organization on social media. Tatour had supported the terror group Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) and posted to Facebook: “I am the next shahid [martyr].”
On October 25, 2017, Sobeih promoted an event co-hosted by UofSC SJP’s on Facebook, titled “The Exiled Palestinians,” featuring Amena Elashkar. In 2016, Elashkar spread [00:01:02] the message that Israel has no right to exist.

Similar events featuring Elashkar have been cancelled because Elashkar was “deemed to be ‘anti-Semitic,’” to which Elashkar replied: “Of course, we expect such talk from our Zionist enemies, and we give it little importance.”

Opposing the Anti Semitism Bill

Sobeih actively promoted UofSC SJP’s efforts to fight against SC H. 3643 “anti-Semitism bill” that sought to include the the State Department’s definition of anti-Semitism when evaluating hostile environment complaints.

On February 22, 2017, Sobeh attended UofSC SJP’s “Stop anti-Palestine Legislation at SC state house!” at the South Carolina legislature’s House Judiciary Special Laws Subcommittee hearing, and spoke [00:37:34] against the bill.

On March 7, 2017, Sobeih posted to Facebook: “Hi y'all. Anyone who might be in town, SJP and Carolina Peace Resource Center are heading to the Statehouse to oppose this bill. Message me if you want to more/join us. [sic]”

On April 19, 2017, Sobeih called on her Facebook followers to come out and oppose SC H. 3643.”

On April 25, 2017, Sobeih posted to Facebook attacking Bill H.3643 and claimed: “It is insulting to our intelligence to pretend that H.3643 aims to protect Jewish people, and it's insulting to any individuals that have experienced anti-Semitism in this state.”

On May 10, 2017, Sobeih posted to Facebook: “We've been fighting H.3643 since February. It's in final stages at the Senate right now. Call Senator Hutto and the other senators, and tell them to oppose H.3643 too.”

On May 17, 2017, Sobeih posted to Facebook celebrating UofSC SJP’s role in defeating SC H. 3643.

The bill was contested and did not pass in 2017, but was later placed in the 2018-2019 budget and currently applies on college campuses.

Promoting BDS

On July 11, 2017, Sobei posted to Facebook: “Thank you everyone for the totally non-coerced, of-your-own-volition birthday wishes! As a gift to me, check out the BDS website https://bdsmovement.net/what-is-bds and check out your local SJP.”

On November 15, 2017, Sobeih posted to Facebook a Michigandaily.com article, titled: “#UMDivest resolution passes for first time in U-M Ann Arbor campus history,” with a comment: “#UofSC let’s follow in their footsteps.”

On November 17, 2017, Sobeih posted to Facebook condemning the University of Michigan for opting not to “comply with student demands” and change long-standing investment policy investing in profitable companies tied to Israel.

Sobeih added: “So what the University of Michigan is saying is they don’t think flagrant violation of international law and human rights laws, Apartheid (again), and genocide are immoral and unethical ideologies. Cool.”

On December 27, 2017, Sobeih shared to Facebook a post applauding singer Lorde’s decision to cancel her performance in Israel and citing BDS.

UofSC SJP - Defending Terrorists

On August 13, 2018, UofSC SJP shared an article to Facebook that defended several“Knife Intifada” terrorists, including Ahmed Manasra and Nurhan Awad.

In October 2015, there was an upsurge in violence across Israel incited by Palestinian political and religious leaders. The wave of stabbings, known as the “Knife Intifada,” was characterized by young Palestinians throughout the country stabbing and attempting to stab Israeli civilians.

Ahmed Manasra (sometimes spelled Mansara) and his 15-year-old cousin Hassan went on a stabbing spree in Jerusalem on October 12, 2015, during the Knife Intifada. They critically wounded a 13-year-old boy and moderately wounded a 25-year-old man. The spree ended when police shot Hassan and a passing motorist hit Ahmed. Ahmed was taken to an Israeli hospital. He admitted to investigators: “I went there to stab Jews.” He was later tried and convicted on two counts of attempted murder.

Hadeel Awad and her cousin Nurhan Awad were shot after they stabbed two people — including a 70-year-old Palestinian resident of Bethlehem — near Jerusalem’s Mahane Yehuda market. Hadeel was shot by police as she was slashing at other Israeli civilians with scissors.

The article shared by UofSC SJP on Facebook also praised Lama Hafez al-Bakri.

In December 2015, 16-year-old Lama al-Bakri drew a knife and attempted to stab a pedestrian in the Jewish neighborhood of Kiryat Arba before she was shot. Bakri was then detained for 3 years.

UofSC SJP- Glorifying Violent Protesters

On May 14, 2018, UofSC SJP posted to Facebook: “Just today, the number of Palestinian martyrs doubled since the beginning of the #GreatReturnMarch as Israel opened live fire” and added: “demand the US and Israel put an end to this ruthless massacre.”

On March 30, 2018, some 30,000 Palestinians in Gaza approached Israel’s border to take part in the “March of Return” protests. Organized and funded by Hamas, the campaign of violent protests along Israel’s border aimed to spotlight the Palestinian demand to “return” to Israel.

The “right of return” has been discredited as a means to eliminate Israel.

On May 15th, 2018, UofSC SJP launched a photo campaign of UofSC SJP activists and members holding up signs in defense of the March of Return.

That day, UofSC SJP tweeted: “peaceful Palestinian protestors at the #GreatReturnMarch demanding basic rights are being massacred by Israeli snipers. Israel opened live ammunition murdering over 50 Palestinians yesterday.”

On September 21, 2018, UofSC SJP posted to Facebook: “We have now entered the 26th week of the #GreatReturnMarch where Palestinians...demand their right of return...israel has opened live ammunition and brutally murders and injuries (nonviolent- btw) Palestinian protestors….We will honor our martyrs.”

UofSC SJP - Promoting Supporters of Terror

On April 22, 2018, UofSC SJP co-hosted Joe Catron and Islam Marqa of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM). The event’s Facebook page noted that ISM volunteers acted as human shields, writing: “They stayed with resistance fighters trapped under siege in the Nativity Church in Bethlehem.”

The International Solidarity Movement (ISM), founded in 2001, is a movement allegedly “committed to resisting the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land using nonviolent, direct-action methods and principles.”

However, the group has been accused of supporting terrorism and has encouraged its foreign volunteers to act “as human shields in cities, towns and refugee camps.” ISM has also encouraged activists to break curfew and disregard Israeli directives prohibiting access to closed military zones.

That policy resulted in the death of Rachel Corrie, who was accidentally killed while interfering with an Israeli military operation in 2003. A wrongful death suit brought by Corrie’s family was dismissed, because the judge ruled that Corrie unreasonably chose to put her own life in danger.

On March 4, 2018, UofSC SJP shared to Facebook an Electronic Intifada (EI) article titled: “How the US jailed five innocent Palestinians.” The UofSC SJP post featured the hashtag “#TheHolyLandFive” (HL5).

The HLF5 were five individuals associated with the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development (HLF) indicted for funnelling funds to Hamas in the guise of humanitarian aid.

The men were were all convicted and sentenced in 2009 to federal prison terms ranging from 15 to 65 years.

SJP

SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.

The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.

SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.

SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.

SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.

Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
