Julia Hishmeh
Overview
Julia Hishmeh has been a chapter coordinator for an NGO that Israel lists as a terror group and whose leadership includes terrorist operatives as designated by the United States government. Hishmeh has also been a New Jersey public school teacher during this period.Under her activism alias “Laila Boutros,” Hishmeh has served as the coordinator of the New York City area chapter of Samidoun: Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network (Samidoun) in 2021, 2022 and 2023. Her chapter goes by Samidoun NY/NJ.
Hishmeh and Samidoun promote terrorism, and at least three of its global leaders are members [pp. 22–28] of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a communist terror group.
At anti-Israel rallies, while representing Samidoun, Hishmeh has expressed [00:06:03] support [00:20:26] for PFLP leaders, honored [00:01:06] terrorists and showed support for terrorism. She has also led [00:12:04] chants promoting hatred of Israelis, expressed [slide 3] hatred of Israel and spread [00:14:01] incitement.
On social media, Hishmeh has celebrated violence, expressed support for a domestic terrorist and spread hatred of Israel.
As of June 2023, Hishmeh’s LinkedIn profile said she has been an English teacher for Jersey City Public Schools since September 2021 in Jersey City, NJ. In March 2023, Hishmeh tweeted that she taught English to 11th graders at a public high school.
In February 2022, she was listed as a “teacher” at Innovation High School in Jersey City, NJ. In April 2021, she appeared in a photo alongside another teacher at Henry P. Becton Regional High School in East Rutherford, NJ.
Hishmeh has allied [slide 3] with Within Our Lifetime (WOL), an anti-Israel activist group in New York City founded by Nerdeen Kiswani. Hishmeh spoke at and led chants at multiple WOL events in 2022. Kiswani introduced [00:05:17] her as “Laila from Samidoun” during one of these events.
Hishmeh is a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.
As of June 2023, Hishmeh’s LinkedIn said she graduated from Montclair State University (Montclair State) with a bachelor’s degree in English in 2019.
As of the same date, Hishmeh’s donorschoose.org page said she was located in Jersey City, NJ.
In June 2023, Hishmeh went by “May Bird” on Facebook. However, as of August 2023, she went by “Julia Hishmeh” on Facebook. She also went by the username “Laila B.” on Twitter and used the handle “@workinglaila” on both Twitter and Instagram.
1/29/2023 - Honoring Terrorists at a WOL Rally
Hishmeh honored [00:01:06] terrorists as a speaker at a January 29, 2023 WOL rally in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. She spoke in her capacity as the Samidoun NY/NJ coordinator.WOL held the rally to “honor the martyrs of Jenin and all of Palestine,” referring to a cell of Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorists killed during a shootout with Israeli soldiers in Jenin three days earlier. The cell reportedly was planning a terror attack and opened fire on soldiers who came to arrest them.
At the rally, Hishmeh said [00:01:06]: “We salute the brave Palestinian people and their resistance organizations and their steadfast and valiant fight to avenge all Palestinian martyrs and reclaim Palestine from the river to the sea. Glory to the martyrs of Jenin and the martyrs of Palestine! Glory to the brave Palestinian resistance! Free, free Palestine! Free, free Palestine!”
Among Palestinians and anti-Israel activists, the term “resistance” can be a euphemism for nationalistic terror. It is often used to excuse or even glorify anti-Israel and anti-Semitic violence.
“From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free” is a chant calling to dismantle the State of Israel. It has also been employed by Hamas leader Khaled Mashal to call for the replacement of Israel with an Islamic state.
10/9/2022 - Supporting Terrorism at a Samidoun Protest
Hishmeh expressed support for terrorism and honored PFLP founder George Habash when she spoke at an October 9, 2022 protest in Manhattan. Samidoun, WOL and the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM) co-organized the pro-BDS rally.George Habash, who has been called“the godfather of Middle East terrorism,” founded the terrorist organization the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). In 1970, Habash was the mastermind behind the hijacking of four Western airliners known as the Dawson Field hijackings. In 1972, the PFLP collaborated with Japanese Red Army terrorists to massacre 24 people at Israel's Lod International Airport (renamed Ben Gurion International Airport).
Samidoun published Hishmeh’s speech where she said: “...I will now read a passage from comrade George Habash, Al Hakim, the speech that he delivered at the Jordan International Hotel in Amman in 1970 to hostages following a resistance operation in the face of US-backed Jordanian regime attacks against the Palestinian revolution.”
Hishmeh referred to Habash’s speech after the Dawson’s Field Hijackings, a series of five near-simultaneous PFLP airplane hijackings.
Hishmeh quoted Habash and said: “Al Hakim says – ‘After 22 years of injustice, inhumanity, living in camps with nobody caring for us, we feel that we have the very full right to protect our revolution. We have all the right to protect our revolution. Our code of morals is our revolution. What saves our revolution, what helps our revolution, what protects our revolution is right, is very right and very honorable and very noble and very beautiful, because our revolution means justice, means having back our homes, having back our country, which is a very just and noble aim.’”
Hishmeh concluded: “Al Hakim was speaking of the brave Palestinian resistance in Palestine and elsewhere in the Arab world, but we know that in order to win, we must fight back everywhere – whether it is in Palestine, New York City, London, or anywhere else in the world. We all have a right and a duty to resist the murderous Zionist entity and all institutions that support and benefit from the Zionist entity’s genocide of the Palestinian people.”
5/15/2022 - Spreading Hatred of Israel at a WOL Rally
Hishmeh spread [slide 3] hatred of Israel while speaking at a May 15, 2022 WOL rally in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. The rally was titled: “Nakba 74.”The term “Nakba” is generally translated as “catastrophe” in Arabic, referring to the outcome of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It is a term often used to delegitimize the creation of the State of Israel by defining it as a catastrophe.
The “right of return” is a Palestinian demand discredited as a means to eliminate Israel. International law mandates no absolute right of return and UN Resolution 194, which defined principles for “refugees wishing to return to their homes,” was unanimously rejected by Arab nations following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
Hishmeh appeared [slide 10] in a photo from the rally, waving a Samidoun flag and wearing a black and red Samidoun shirt.
At the protest, Kiswani also said [00:06:18]: “Ever since May 15, 1948, and even before, Palestinians have been killed senselessly, have been facing genocide, because the Israeli plan is to colonize all of Palestine from the river to the sea. And this is why we fight for Palestine from the river to the sea because every inch of that land is Palestinian and there will never be peace without justice.”
4/20/2022 - Promoting Hatred of Israelis at a WOL Rally
Hishmeh participated [00:10:36] in the chant: “One, two, three, four! Occupation no more! Five, six, seven, eight! Smash the settler Zionist state!” She appeared [00:10:46] on the right side of the screen, wearing a beige jacket and a red and white keffiyeh, the colors of the PFLP.
Hishmeh then led [00:11:57] the chant: “We don’t want no two states, we want ‘48!”
“48” refers to 1948, the year the State of Israel was established.
Hishmeh also led [00:12:04] a chant referring to Israeli Jews: “Settlers, settlers go back home! Palestine is our home!”
One way that anti-Israel activists spread anti-Semitism is by claiming that Israeli Jews have no connection to the Land of Israel.
Hishmeh also led [00:12:12] the chants: “It is right to rebel, Israel go to hell!” and “Stop the U.S. war machine, from Palestine to the Philippines!”
Hishmeh continued [00:12:27]: “Resistance is justified when people are occupied!” and “Palestine is our demand, no peace on stolen land!”
Hishmeh then led [00:12:51] the chant: “Not just annexation! Not just occupation! Fight for liberation! Bring the whole thing down!”
Hishmeh also led [00:13:21] the chant: “Israel, you can’t hide! You’re committing genocide!” and [00:14:01] later: “There is only one solution! Intifada, revolution!”
The term “intifada,” which translates from Arabic as “uprising” or “insurrection,” carries the connotation of violence. Palestinian intifadas waged against Israel have been marked since 1987 by hundreds of hijackings, shootings, stabbings, bombings and suicide missions.
The rally was titled: “NYC EMERGENCY RALLY TO SUPPORT PALESTINIAN RESISTANCE & LIBERATION BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY.” The rally was co-organized by WOL, Samidoun, PYM and other anti-Israel groups. It was held outside the Israeli consulate in Manhattan, which the groups referred to as the “Zionist mission.”
Later in the rally, Hishmeh applauded [00:38:55] after Kiswani said [00:38:50]: “We call an end to Zionism, and yes, we call an end to the settler state of Israel!”
Zionism is the belief that Jews have the right to self-determination in their own national home, and the right to develop their national culture.
Kiswani went on to say [00:39:08]: “The Nakba may have begun in 1948 but it did not end. It’s going on till today and the only way to end it is to free Palestine within our lifetime by any means necessary!”
Hishmeh then repeatedly shouted [00:39:22]: “By any means necessary!”
3/30/2022 - Supporting PFLP Terrorists at a Samidoun Protest
Hishmeh expressed [00:06:51] support for multiple PFLP terrorists and promoted [00:06:27] hatred of Israel and accused [00:07:26] Israel of working with American police to “kill black boys and girls.” Hishmeh was a featured [00:05:17] speaker at the Manhattan protest co-organized by Samidoun and WOL on March 30, 2022.Hishmeh spoke [00:06:03] about Ghassan Kanafani: “37 years ago this July, Ghassan Kanafani, beloved Palestinian writer and PFLP leader, was assassinated by the Mossad via a car bomb...”
Kanafani was a leading member and spokesperson for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) during the terrorist organization’s early years. Kanafani announced the PFLP’s responsibility for the Lod Airport Massacre of May 1972 and was linked to the airport attackers. The attack killed 26 people and wounded 80 others.
Hishmeh also spoke about Khaled Barakat, a PFLP and Samidoun leader, saying [00:06:51]: “Palestinian activist Khaled Barakat fought to appeal his unjust political ban from Germany. Khaled was banned from the country because he was not afraid to say he supports Palestinian resistance and he calls for the liberation of Palestine.”
Khaled Barakat is reportedly [p. 24] a “Central Committee member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).” In October 2022, Barakat was banned by the Netherlands, along with his wife, anti-Israel agitator Charlotte Kates, from entering the European Union (EU). In February 2020, Barakat was deported from Germany and placed under a 4-year entry ban.
Hishmeh commented [00:07:07] on Barakat’s ban: “This is what the enemy does when they can't literally kill our people. They attempt to kill our spirit and kill our voices…This won't work because the people of the world can recognize a common enemy.”
Hishmeh went on to say [00:07:26]: “The same forces that encourage IDF [Israel Defense Forces] soldiers to murder Palestinian children also encourage United States pigs [police officers] to kill black boys and girls.”
The accusation that Israeli law enforcement teaches American police brutal tactics during police exchange programs is used to demonize Israel. Participants in these programshave stated [00:02:14] that the training in Israel focuses [00:13:36] on public policy, counter-terrorism and leadership training in the form of lectures and discussions.
An Instagram post promoting the rally said: “Join us to demand a shutdown of FIDF [Friends of the IDF] and all Zionist settler orgs in our city and worldwide!” The rally was co-sponsored by WOL, Samidoun, PYM and other anti-Israel groups. The rally was part of WOL’s “Defund Racism” campaign, which demands “ending ALL US military aid to the zionist entity,” and calls for the “right of return for all Palestinian refugees.”
12/11/2021 - Supporting Terrorism at a Protest
Hishmeh expressed [00:20:26] support for terrorists as a speaker representing Samidoun at a protest in Philadelphia on December 11, 2021.As coordinator of Samidoun NY/NJ, Hishmeh spoke [00:19:58] at a protest where she said [00:20:26]: “In 2019, Ahmad Sa’adat, the imprisoned general secretary of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, said: ‘Whether the name is Mumia Abu Jamal, Walid Daqqa or Georges Abdallah, political prisoners behind bars can and must be a priority for our movements.”
Ahmad Sa’adat is the Secretary General of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). He is currently sentenced for terror activities, including his role in the 2001 assassination of Israeli Tourism Minister Rehavam Ze’evi and is in an Israeli prison. Under Sa’adat’s leadership, the PFLP perpetrated many suicide bombings against Israeli civilians during the second intifada.
Mumia Abu Jamal was convicted of murder and sentenced to death in 1982 for the 1981 murder of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner. In 2011, his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment without parole.
Walid Daqqa was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for reportedly having been part of a PFLP terror cell that abducted and killed an Israeli soldier in 1984.
Georges Abdallah is a convicted Lebanese terrorist, reportedly a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and co-founder of the Lebanese Armed Revolutionary Factions (LARF). He murdered an American military attaché and an Israeli diplomat in 1982.
Hishmeh continued [00:20:46]: “These names illustrate the continuity of struggle against our collective enemy — their legacies of organizing that reach back to the anti-colonial liberation movements of the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s to today. Political prisoners are not simply individuals; they are leaders of struggle and organizing.’”
Hishmeh then said [00:21:17]: “From occupied Palestine to St. Petersburg, we need our political prisoners more than they need us. Their thoughts, their words, and particularly their examples as uncompromised fighters for collective liberation illuminate all our paths to freedom. Sa’adat also said: ‘Israel or France or the U.S. would free us or Georges Abdallah or Mumia Abu Jamal if we were willing to become tools of the system or betray our people. But instead, the prisons have generated striking examples of a culture of resistance from art to literature to political ideas.’”
Terror Support (PFLP)
Hishmeh retweeted a March 8, 2023 tweet that said: “To every woman who picked up a gun for liberation... To the guardians & warriors. The thorn in the side of the neocolonial patriarchal world order. We celebrate you. #InternationalWomensDay.” The tweet included [photo 4] a picture of Shadia Abu Ghazaleh holding a firearm.Hishmeh also retweeted on the March 8, 2023 tweet that contained a 2023 PFLP poster celebrating International Women’s Day, with an image of a woman holding a firearm and the text:ااذار يوم المرأة العالمي َ/ المرأة غرس الأرض ونبض الثورة" [woman is the seed of the land and the pulse of the revolution].”
Hishmeh retweeted a January 20, 2023 tweet by Samidoun NY/NJ that said: “

HAPPENING TOMORROW

Rally to Free Ahmad Sa'adat and Ahmad Mansara and Support Palestinian Resistance & Liberation…With: @WOLPalestine.”Ahmed Manasra (sometimes spelled Mansara) and his 15-year-old cousin Hassan went on a stabbing spree in Jerusalem on October 12, 2015, during the Knife Intifada. They critically wounded a 13-year-old boy and moderately wounded a 25-year-old man. The spree ended when police shot Hassan and a passing motorist hit Ahmed. Ahmed was taken to an Israeli hospital. He admitted to investigators: “I went there to stab Jews.” He was later tried and convicted on two counts of attempted murder.
On July 8, 2022, Hishmeh posted on Facebook: “Today we honor and remember the martyr Ghassan Kanafani, PLFP [sic] leader…”
Hishmeh’s post continued: “Ghassan Kanafani may have died 50 years ago, but his revolutionary power gains strength with each passing minute. He has never felt closer or more alive than he does today.”
Hishmeh then quoted from a letter written by Kanafani's wife after his death that said: “Nobody can destroy an honourable human being rooted through revolutionary struggle among his people. You will always be with us Ghassan - a martyr, a symbol, a flame of liberation and revolution…we will do our best to carry your torch.”
Leila Khaled is a leading member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and participated in the hijacking of TWA Flight 840 in 1969 and El Al Flight 219 in 1970. As of 2017, Khaled was a member of PFLP's Political Bureau. Khaled has said that the second intifada failed because it was not violent enough, advocated [00:36:07] for the use of children in terror activities and compared Zionists to Nazis.
On March 26, 2022, Hishmeh introduced [00:02:00] an online lecture on “Palestine and U.S. Strategy in the Arab World” that featured Barakat.
On March 10, 2022, Hishmeh shared on Facebook a link to a Samidoun campaign to pay for Barakat’s legal costs. In a court case in Germany, he was fighting a Berlin Immigration Office directive barring him “from participating in political and social events and activities” and recommending he be “expelled from the country for four years.”
Hishmeh retweeted a January 26, 2022 tweet that contained a letter from George Habash to Ghassan Kanafani’s wife Anni Høver after Kanafani’s death. In the letter, Habash called Kanafani “precious” and “indispensable” and told Anni he was “fighting for a just cause.”
On January 19, 2022, Hishmeh embedded a tweet featuring a series of photos of Kanafani saying: “You might have heard the news through the imperialist propaganda system…that they are defeated by the reactionary Israel. Comrades, do not believe them. There is no end to our struggle.” Hishmeh commented: “Until liberation.”
On December 9, 2021, Hishmesh updated her Facebook cover photo to a Samidoun poster that said: “Freedom for all Palestinian Prisoners!” The poster featured photos of PFLP terrorists [left to right] Sa’adat, Abdallah and Khalida Jarrar.
Hishmeh retweeted an August 27, 2021 tweet that said: “abu ali mustafa, pflp leader, killed by zionist helicopter gunship in his office in ramallah on this day in 2001… the abu ali mustafa brigades were founded in his honour ... god bless the martyrs & those who love them.”
Abu Ali Mustafa, also known as Mustafa Zibri, was the Secretary General of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). Mustafa was involved in multiple bomb attacks, including in central Jerusalem, when he was the terror group's Secretary General.
Celebrating Violence
Hishmeh retweeted a February 27, 2023 tweet with a graphic that said “SETTLER DOWN,” featuring balloons, party streamers and a yellow cartoon star wearing a PFLP headband and a red and white keffiyeh. The tweet said: “:)”On February 27, 2023, 26-year-old U.S.-Israeli citizen Elan Ganeles was murdered by Palestinian terrorists who shot at his car from their vehicle while he was driving to a friend’s wedding.
Hishmeh retweeted a February 24, 2023 tweet that quoted Mao Zedong’s phrase: “Every Communist must grasp the truth; ‘Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun.’”
Hishmeh retweeted a January 20, 2022 tweet that said: “There is literally no point in talking about ‘Palestinian liberation’ if you aren’t actively supporting the armed Palestinian resistance movements.
Hishmeh retweeted a June 8, 2021 tweet that said: “I still regularly see a revolting amount of comments saying ‘oh no, the Palestinians are throwing away all that precious international sympathy by resorting to armed resistance’. To anyone who says this, I have nothing but naked, undisguised *disgust*.”
Supporting a Domestic Terrorist
Hishmeh retweeted a January 13, 2023 tweet that featured a picture of Assata Shakur with a quote attributed to her that said: “‘I have declared war on the rich who prosper on our poverty, the politicians who lie to us with smiling faces, and all the mindless, heartless, robots who protect them and their property.’ ...”Assata Shakur was convicted of killing a New Jersey state trooper and wounding another in 1973 while a member of the Black Liberation Army (BLA). She escaped from prison in 1979 and fled to Cuba in 1984, where she resides today. She is listed on the FBI Most Wanted Terror List under her legal name, Joanne Deborah Chesimard.
Hatred of Israel
Hishmeh retweeted a May 29, 2022 tweet that said: “good afternoon. death 2 israel.”Hishmeh retweeted a May 2, 2022 tweet that said: “israel has the second highest skin cancer rate in the world LMFAOOOO [LAUGHING MY F**KING A** OFF].”
Hishmeh retweeted a June 17, 2021 tweet from anti-Israel agitator Steven Salaita that said: “Israelis had to invent a language, a cuisine, a paleo-history, a nationality, and a folk culture from a set of mythologies about the ancient past…”
Samidoun
Samidoun has collaborated with Leila Khaled, a terrorist with the internationally designated terrorist organization, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terrorist. Samidoun called Khaled a “Palestinian resistance icon.”
Samidoun’s European Coordinator, Mohammed Khatib, is a member of the PFLP.
The group honored Hamas operative Saleh Barghouti, who shot and wounded seven civilians during a drive-by shooting and Ashraf Na’alwa, who murdered two Israeli co-workers in a terror attack at an Israeli industrial area.
Samidoun also campaigned for the release of PFLP Secretary General Ahmad Sa’adat, terrorist Bilal Kayed and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) senior member Khader Adnan.
In February 2019, the Israeli Ministry of Strategic Affairs and Public Diplomacy published a report exposing Samidoun’s ties with the PFLP.
On April 23, 2019, Samidoun was informed by PayPal that their account had been “permanently limited” due to the nature of their activities.
WOL
Within Our Lifetime (WOL) is a pro-terror activist group in New York City dedicated to Israel’s destruction within the lifetime of its members.Acts of violence and physical confrontations with police have frequently occurred at WOL protests and marches. WOL uses harassment campaigns to target pro-Israel organizations or companies that do business with Israel, making it a part of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.
Multiple activists who have either burned Israeli flags or led chants at WOL rallies were later jailed for violent anti-Semitic hate crimes, including Saadah Masoud and Waseem Awawdeh. In Masoud’s case, he received 18 months in jail for an anti-Semitic assault at an April 2022 WOL rally and two other anti-Semitic assaults in 2021.
WOL promotes “resistance” against Israel “by any means necessary,” calls to “Globalize the Intifada,” spreads incitement and idolizes [00:34:06] Palestinian terrorists like Leila Khaled and others at rallies and online events.
WOL was founded by Nerdeen Kiswani and Dan Cione in 2015. Kiswani is a frequent speaker at WOL rallies where she has promoted terrorism against Israelis and called for the death of Zionists. She has also provided support for Masoud and other activists following their arrests.
WOL began as the New York City chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), going by NYC SJP, but changed its name in 2018. The group is not found to be registered in any U.S. state as a nonprofit organization under its official name. Nor is there any listing for WOL under its name on the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) website for tax-exempt organizations.
BDS
The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.
One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”
Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”
In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”
The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.
BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.
The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.
Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.
BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
