Virginia Page Fortna

Virginia Page Fortna [Page Fortna] participated in the pro-Hamas encampment at Columbia in May 2024. The encampment was also in support of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

On May 1, 2024, Virginia Page Fortna was featured in an Instagram video of a faculty rally that took place that day outside Columbia’s gates. The event was held to protest the arrests of encampment participants and the police raid on Columbia’s Hamilton Hall, which had been taken over by activists and vandalized the day before.

The Instagram post said: “Columbia University faculty…took to the sidewalk outside the University gates to protest the University’s repression of political speech and flagrant disregard for student well-being.”

In the video, Fortna can be seen [00:00:05] holding a sign that said: “SHAME,” while standing next to anti-Israel professor Rashid Khalidi as he addressed the crowd. Khalidi claimed [00:01:56]: “The United States is part of this war.” He later said [00:05:02] “This is about a genocide being carried on with American money and with American weapons, against a people that has been living under occupation…”

Khalidi also said [00:03:04] with regard to the arrests of encampment participants and those who occupied Hamilton Hall: “What we are witnessing in terms of police repression is a tiny fraction of what people under occupation in Palestine have been experiencing for 56 years [since the Six Day War]...”

Fortna also showed support for the encampment in April 2024 on her social media accounts.
