Jennifer Hirsch
Jennifer Hirsch [Jennifer S. Hirsch] participated in and expressed support for the pro-Hamas encampment at Columbia in April and May 2024.
On May 2, 2024, Columbia professor Jennifer Hirsch posted on X: “Outside agitator idea is an insult to these students’ passion, commitment, global solidarity, sense of their power to shape history. Do i love every chant? Not really. But am I awed by their vision and courage? By the Jewish students’ praying with their feet?
.”
Her post included a photo of an orange tent at the encampment with a sign that said [photo 1]: “To RESIST IS TO LOVE.”
Among Palestinians and anti-Israel activists, the term “resistance” is a euphemism for nationalistic terror and is used to glorify and encourage anti-Israel and antisemitic violence.
On April 29, 2024, Hirsch was featured [slide 5] in a photo posted on Instagram alongside other faculty members wearing an orange vest and holding a sign that said: “HANDS OFF OUR STUDENTS.”
Numerous Columbia faculty and staff members participated in the encampment wearing bright orange vests with yellow and gray stripes. Taped to each vest was a label that said either “FACULTY” or “STAFF.” They had organized to support the student protestors in various ways. Some made up a “human barricade” to prevent Jewish students from entering [00:03:16] the campus, and some held signs saying: “HANDS OFF OUR STUDENTS" and [00:00:31] “No cops on campus.” Other faculty and staff “lined up in front of the encampment in a show of solidarity with the student body."
There was also a group of Columbia faculty and staff members who wore [00:01:00, 00:02:12] yellow vests with gray stripes during the encampment. On one occasion, they prevented [00:03:06] those they deemed “provocateurs” [00:01:09, 00:01:26] from entering Columbia as well.
On April 22, 2024, Jennifer Hirsch, along with other Columbia faculty members, participated [00:01:19] in the “‘Faculty Walkout’ rally…to support Palestine and Liberated Zone Encampment.” The event was held in support of the students arrested by the New York Police Department (NYPD) and suspended by the university.
Hirsch featured [slide 3] in a photo posted on Instagram standing to the right of the cameraman wearing a blue and black graduation gown while holding a sign that said: “HANDS OFF OUR STUDENTS.”
Faculty members carrying signs that said [00:00:35]: “END STUDENT SUSPENSIONS NOW” and HANDS OFF OUR STUDENTS,” walked out of their classrooms and made their way to the steps of the library facing the encampment. A crowd gathered and chanted: “Disclose! Divest! We will not stop, we will not rest!” A few walkout participants addressed [00:00:14] the crowd expressing faculty support for their students and the encampment.
On the same date, Hirsch posted on X: “My marvelous colleague Prof Christopher Brown (@CUHistoryDept) brought the
at today's Columbia faculty action opposing the arrests of students, suppression of free speech and the congressional threat to independence in higher education. Here's the whole thing. #NoCopsOnCampus #HandsOffOurStudents.”
Hirsch also expressed support for the encampment. On April 20, 2024, Hirsch posted on X: “Outraged at the student arrests, lack of due process, cops on campus? @Columbia @BarnardCollege students/faculty/staff alums sign on here.” Her post linked to a petition titled: “Condemning the arrest of students on Columbia’s campus.”
The petition included a declaration by the Barnard College (Barnard) and Columbia chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) that said: “We condemn in the strongest possible terms the Administration’s suspension of students…” Barnard is part of Columbia.
The declaration also said: “We demand that all Barnard College and Columbia University suspensions and charges be dismissed immediately and expunged from the student’s records, and that all rights and privileges be restored to them immediately.”
The encampment was also in support of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.
Columbia is located in New York, New York.
