Guangtian Ha

Guangtian Ha is a professor of religion who called for Israel’s destruction and spread hatred of Zionists following the murder of approximately 1,200 Israelis by Hamas on October 7, 2023. For more information on the attacks, see the Canary Mission page on Hamas.

Ha is a supporter (p. 60) of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

On September 9, 2024, the Deborah Project, a “public interest law firm representing victims of antisemitism and anti-Zionism in education,” filed a class action lawsuit against Haverford College (Haverford).

Ha was cited (p.58, number 182, erroneously identified as “Guantian Ha”) in the Amended Complaint as an example of Haverford “allowing its professors to issue abusive, obscene denunciations of Zionism, and of any person...who is a Zionist.”

Guangtian Ha received a PhD in cultural anthropology from Columbia University (Columbia) in 2014.

As of November 2024, Ha was listed on Haverford’s website as an associate professor of religion and listed as a member of Haverford’s Quaker Studies Working Group. Ha joined the faculty at Haverford in 2018.

Haverford is located in Haverford, Pennsylvania.

As captured in the Amended Complaint (p. 60, top of page), on August 19, 2024, Ha posted on X: “By this point matter is no longer just ceasefire. The state of Israel must be dismantled and the society de-Nazified. Arms embargo, sanction, boycott, attack Zionism on all fronts. Zionism is Nazism, it is fascism. Zionists are racists”

Zionism is the belief that Jews have the right to self-determination in their own national home, and the right to develop their national culture. Zionism is a core part of the identity of most Jews.

The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) highlights as one possible contemporary example of anti-Semitism: “Drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis.” The U.S. State Department adopted the IHRA’s working definition of anti-Semitism in 2016. Over 40 countries have adopted the definition as well.

On Saturday, October 7, 2023, approximately 2,900 heavily armed Hamas terrorists breached Israel’s border with Gaza. They executed numerous war crimes on civilians, including mass murder, beheadings of children, rape of men and women, torture, kidnappings and mutilation.

Hamas broadcast videos of their butchery on social media, often to victims’ accounts for families to see. Israel retaliated with a war called “Swords of Iron.” As of November 10, 2023, approximately 1,200 Israelis, the vast majority of them civilians, were murdered during the attacks. Hamas kidnapped 242 Israelis, including at least 30 children. At least 3,500 people were wounded, many severely.

A terrorist detained by Israel admitted he raped an Israeli woman when he broke into a kibbutz house during the October 7, 2023 attack. In March 2024, a former hostage of Hamas publicly stated she was sexually abused and tortured while in captivity.

As captured in the Amended Complaint (p. 59, top of page), on August 15, 2024, Ha posted on X: “...the only way to deal with zionists is to stop talking to them and refuse to let them waste your time. Liberal zionists in particular. And I learned a new term, ‘reluctant Zionist’, and I guess there were plenty of reluctant Nazis, too. Perhaps majority of them were.”

As captured in the Amended Complaint (p. 59, bottom of page), on August 16, 2024, Ha posted on X: “Anyone who says ‘what about Hamas' can go f*** themself. This *is* Zionism and if you say it is not, then you are basically contradicting yourself by saying you are a non-racist racist and you humanise others by dehumanising them — and you kill to save. GO F*** YOURSELF.”

As captured in the Amended Complaint (p. 60, bottom of page), in an undated post on X, Ha wrote: “Zionism is fundamentally a modern racist ideology that has next to nothing to do with Judaism as an ancient religion.”

On August 21, 2024 (using the handle “@sulaymangt” on his now private X account), Ha posted: “Obv this is what my institution is instilling in all our incoming students. Straight copy & paste out of ADL talking points.”

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) was founded in 1913 “To stop the defamation of the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment to all.

Ha’s post included two slides of what appears to be an online presentation at Haverford, with text partially displayed.

The slide on the left appears to be titled: “...Antisemitism @ Haverford” and reads in part: “...the word ‘Intifada’ may invoke terror attacks against Jews in Israel…” and “...from the ‘River to the Sea’ as a call for peace–that is NOT how Jews [experi]ence it…” and “...someone a ‘zio’...”

The term “intifada,” which translates from Arabic as “uprising” or “insurrection,” carries the connotation of violence. Palestinian intifadas waged against Israel have been marked since 1987 by hundreds of hijackings, shootings, stabbings, bombings and suicide missions.

“From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be Free” is a chant used [00:02:47] to call for the elimination of the State of Israel. It has also been employed by Hamas leader Khaled Mashal to call for the replacement of Israel with an Islamic state. In April 2024, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution condemning the chant as antisemitic.

The term "Zio" is a common derogatory reference to Zionists, as well as an often-used anti-Semitic slur among white supremacists.

The slide on the right appears to be titled: “...Antisemitism @ Haverford” and read in part:: “Antisemitism today can also target the Jewish State of Israel…” and then: “[D]emonization (portraying Jews/Israelis as inhuman, satanic, or monstrous…” and then: “[D]legitimization (denying Jews alone the right to self-determination in…[an]cestral homeland…” and then “[D]ouble Standards (demanding of the Jewish state of Israel behavior not re…democratic nations)...”

This slide appears to address the "3D test" of antisemitism, a set of criteria designed to “distinguish legitimate criticism of Israel from anti-Semitism.” 3D stands for Delegitimization, Demonization, and Double Standards.

Ha (using the handle “@sulaymangt” on his now private X account) reposted a September 5, 2024 post on X from Ussama Makdisi that said: “...Israel has ensured a polio outbreak in Gaza because of its deliberate and methodical obliteration of society, housing, infrastructure, water supply, sanitation and hospitals there…”

Makdisi’s post continued: “The liberal West has enabled this led by the United States which has provided billions of dollars of weapons and ammunition for Israel’s genocide…Israel continues to slaughter civilians and children…”
