Zach Taylor

Overview

Zach Taylor is an active member of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at the University of Chicago (U of C), who makes and posts SJP posters around campus. He has fundraised for SJP and is active in the group both regionally and nationally.

Taylor supports the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. He was a team memberof the UofC Divest BDS campaign.

Taylor is also a member of Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) at UChicago (JVP UChicago).

Taylor is a junior at U of C, majoring in Geographical Studies, Comparative Race, and Ethnic Studies. Taylor works at the Ex Libris Cafe on the U of C campus. He is also a staff writer for the South Side Weekly and a regular contributor to the online magazine Palestine in America.

Painting Attempted Murderers as Victims

On October 16, 2015, Taylor on Facebook referred to Palestinian terrorists Asraa Zidan, Tawfik Abed and Ahmed Manasra as "Palestinian victims of Israeli state violence" and accused Israel of “opening fire on unarmed members of Palestinian society.”

Both Abed and Manasra were injured after attempting to kill Israeli Jews. However, SJP U of C initiated a poster campaign across campus memorializing Abed, Manasra and other participants in anti-Israel violence — claiming they were "MURDERED BY THE ISRAELI MILITARY."

On October 9, 2015, Abed was shot after she attempted to stab an Israeli soldier at a bus station. Abed was later treated at an Israeli hospital and survived.

On October 12, 2016, 13-year-old Manasra went on a stabbing spree with his 15 year-old cousin in Jerusalem and critically injured a 13-year old Israeli boy.

Although one of SJP U of C’s posters claimed — falsely— that Manasra was "shot and left to die," Mansara was treated at an Israeli hospital and fully recovered. On October 15, 2016, he admitted to the stabbing episode and said, “I went there to stab Jews.”

Another SJP U of C poster referred to Palestinian terrorist Fadi Aloon as "murdered by the Israeli police."

Fadi Aloon was shot by Israeli security forces after he stabbed a 15-year-old Israeli boy. Several hours before the attack, Aloon posted “Either martyrdom or victory” on his Facebook page.

Doubling Down on Lies and Incitement

On October 16, 2015, Taylor responded on Facebook to an on-campus flyer that criticized SJP U of C’s posters for lying about Abed and Manasra’s deaths. Taylor deflected the criticism and instead claimed "opening fire on unarmed members of Palestinian society." Taylor ended his response by deriding the criticism, stating that “[i]f anyone believed this was going to deter SJP ...this campus has another thing [sic.] coming.”

Endorsing the Bullying of Pro-Israel LGBT Groups

On January 25, 2016, Taylor wrote an article endorsing an anti-Israel rally of about 200 protesters at a major U.S. LGBT conference in Chicago. The demonstrators shut down a talk about LGBT life in Israel, which featured a Jerusalem LGBT group and an American pro-Israel LGBT group.

Taylor’s article appeared on the website Palestine in America and included a video showing agitators creating an openly hostile environment. They shouted explicit calls for Israel’s destruction — including "From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free!" and “Zionism has got to go!” The video and other footage shows protesters pushing and shoving outside the event room. Three protesters eventually broke into the room and shouted down speakers.

Some protesters reportedly used the anti-Semitic slur "k*ke" against the Jewish conference participants. One protester shouted: “we’re going to stay here and we’re going to challenge these Zionist racist motherf***kers.” Some attendees of the talk had to leave through side entrances as they were blocked from leaving the main entrance by protesters. Eventually the police were called in to intervene.

The protest was widely criticized within the LGBT community.

Deriding Jewish Self-Determination

On March 9, 2015, Taylor tweeted he was "constantly surprised at how betrayed I feel when I find out a friend is a Zio." {"snippet" : "Zio"} On January 21, 2016, Taylor used the term “zio” in another derogatory tweet: “tfw zio boys tryna with you at work lmao bye.”

Purveying Hate-Speech and Racism

On January 28, 2015, Taylor tweeted criticism of U of C students for wearing "7attas," another term for a keffiyeh, saying “if you don't support a #FreePalestine I hate you.”

On April 3, 2015, Taylor retweeted a tweet from SJP U of C of an attack on gay rights activist Dan Savage for being white, saying "White system, white tears. Dan Savage and the rest of his white, liberal gay rights activists."

On April 19, 2015, Taylor tweeted, "wow so many high school friends have went on to join zionist groups on their campuses, it's painful."

On October 27, 2015, Taylor retweeted a photo which said, "White People out of Pilsen," a reference to a predominantly Mexican-American Chicago neighborhood.

Supporting Student-Killer Rasmea Odeh

On March 31, 2016, Taylor posed for a photo with unrepentant terrorist-murderer Rasmea Odeh as part of the "kickoff night" for UofC Divest.

Approximately a year earlier, on April 19, 2015, Taylor shared the Twitter hashtag "#Justice4Rasmea." On January 30, 2015, Taylor shared a link on his Twitter page for a fundraiser for Odeh’s legal defense. On November 7, 2014, Taylor supported Odeh on Facebook, posting an image of her with the text “#JUSTICE4RASMEA.” Taylor said in his post, “Wish I could be at the trial to show solidarity.”

Odeh was a key military operative [00:02:08]with the terrorist group the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). In 1969, Odeh masterminded a PFLP bombing that killed two college students in a Jerusalem supermarket. Odeh also attempted to bomb the British consulate.

Odeh confessed, in a highly detailed account, the day following her arrest. In a 2004 documentary, one of Odeh’s co-conspirators directly implicated [00:10:53] Odeh as the mastermind.

In 1970, an Israeli court tried and convicted Odeh for her involvement in both bombings and sentenced her to life imprisonment. However, Odeh was released 10 years later, in a prisoner swap and emigrated to the United States.

On November 10, 2014, a Michigan federal jury convicted Odeh for immigration fraud because she failed to disclose her prior conviction and life sentence on her immigration application. On March 12, 2015, she was sentenced to 18 months in prison.

In 2017, after an appeal and a lengthy court battle, Odeh admitted to immigration fraud, was stripped of her U.S. citizenship, deported to Jordan and banned from re-entering the U.S.

Supporting PFLP Member Khalida Jarrar

On April 19, 2015, Taylor shared the Twitter hashtag "#FreeKhalida" in support of Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) member Khalida Jarrar. {"snippet" : "Khalida Jarrar"}

The PFLP — designated a terrorist organization by the United States, Canada, Israel, the European Union, the Gulf Cooperation Council and Australia — pioneered aircraft hijackings to draw attention to their movement’s demands, most notably with the capture of an Air France plane in 1976.

The hijackers flew the plane to Entebbe, Uganda, where they separated nearly 100 Jewish passengers from the others and threatened to execute one Jew per hour. Israel, however, launched a successful commando raid to rescue the hostages.

The PFLP also claimed “credit” for the November 18, 2014 Har Nof Synagogue massacre — where PFLP operatives murdered six people with a gun, axes and a butcher knife during morning prayers. PFLP Gaza leader Hani Thawbta stated: “We declare full responsibility of the PFLP for the execution of this heroic operation..."

Supporting BDS’ Call to Destroy Israel

Taylor’s Facebook and Twitter accounts are full of support for campus BDS campaigns.

On September 28, 2015, Taylor criticized supporters of a two-state solution.

On April 4, 2016, Taylor calledon Facebook for the "liberation of Palestine" — a euphemism for the dissolution of Israel — as part of a UofC Divest photo campaign.

Taylor added that he has "always followed and supported" campus BDS campaigns and linked specifically to the 2005 call by “Palestinian Civil Society” for BDS. The three-tier goal of that request translates to a duplicitous summons for Israel’s demise.

Denying Israel’s Right to Self Defense

Taylor took part in at least three anti-Israel demonstrations before and during Israel’s Operation Protective Edge in 2014 — which Israel launched to destroy Hamas’ attack tunnels and stop missile attacks on Israeli civilians.

On July 5, 2014, Taylor joined an anti-Israel protest in Chicago in the run-up to the war and just weeks after Hamas kidnapped and murdered three Israeli high school students.

The rally featured many anti-Semitic images including a shirt showing a Nazi Swastika morphing into a Jewish Star of David. The rally also featured libelous chants against Israel of "How many kids have you killed today?" and inflammatory signs, including one that said “STOP KILLING CHILDREN - FREE PALESTINE.” Taylor posted a photo of the rally to his Facebook page the next day.

On July 10, 2014, Taylor participated in another anti-Israel march in Chicago where protesters held signsreading — "Operation Protective Edge = Palestinian Genocide," and ‘End the Israeli Terrorism.”

On August 10, 2014, Taylor participated in an anti-Israel march organized by Chicago Coalition for Justice in Palestine (CCJP) that was attended by other members of SJP U of C and JVP UChicago.

Demonizing Israel

On November 14, 2015, Taylor on Facebook implied that Israeli soldiers are "terrorists."

On May 8, 2014, Taylor posted a photo on Facebook of himself protesting Israeli Independence Day. Taylor stood alongside other SJP U of C and JVP UChicago members who accused Israel of "ethnic cleansing" in the 1948 Israeli War of Independence.

On November 6, 2013, Taylor on Facebook shared an SJP U of C poster promoting Israel-hater Sarah Schulman's event on"pinkwashing," a claim that Israel promotes gay rights to deflect attention from its human rights violations.

Defending Hate Speech as "Free Speech"

On March 31, 2015, Taylor retweeted a tweet in support of Steven Salaita.

In 2014, The University of Illinois withdrew an offer of employment to Salaita after becoming aware of his anti-Semitic tweets. One tweet, posted shortly after Hamas kidnapped three teenage Israeli high school students, read: "You may be too refined to say it, but I’m not: I wish all the f**king West Bank settlers would go missing.” In 2017, Salaita posted to Facebook: “People ask if I would go back in time and change anything. I would not…I will die unapologetic.” In February 2019, Salaita stated that he had become a school bus driver in the Washington, D.C., area.

On April 1, 2016, Taylor promoted on Facebook an event titled "Narratives of Resistance" organized by several organizations including SJP and JVP UChicago. The event featured New York based poet, Remi Kenazi. Kenazi recites aggressively anti-Israel poetry. The event also featured Lubna Morrar, who spreads incitement against Israelis and hatred of America in her poetry.

Endorsing Israel-Hater Max Blumenthal

On May 18, 2015, Taylor posed for a photo on Twitter with anti-Semitic journalist Max Blumenthal’s book "Goliath: Life and Loathing in Greater Israel." The book has been dubbed “The Israel Hater’s Handbook” by Eric Alterman of progressive magazine The Nation. Taylor’s tweet said:“"I have @MaxBlumenthal's book on my bedside table"

Lying To Slander Israel

On May 13, 2015, SJP U of C held Palestine Solidarity Week, which featured a JVP UChicago workshop titled, "Facing the Nakba."

Taylor participated in the event holding a placard that called Israel a "colonial project." JVP UChicago posted pictures of other SJP U of C and JVP UChicago members with similar placards containing anti-Israel propaganda on Facebook.

One placard stated, that "in 2011 the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) passed a bill which bars any public funding for any commemoration of Nakba day."

The bill penalized local authorities and other state-funded bodies for holding events marking Nakba (Arabic for catastrophe) Day on Israel’s Independence Day, holding events that support armed resistance or racism against Israel, or desecrating the state flag or national symbols.

Other placards propagated the unique definition of "refugee" that UNRWA applies to Palestinian Arabs, with one placard stating that over 4.4 Million Palestinian refugees are registered with the U.N. and others estimatingthe total number of Palestinian refugees at 7 Million.

Israeli Apartheid Week

From October 26-30, 2015, SJP launched their annual Israeli Apartheid Week. This five day event was dedicated to demonizing Israel with propaganda.

On October 29, 2015, Taylor attended an event with anti-police agitator Page May from We Charge Genocide and co-founder of the BDS movement Omar Barghouti, who rejects the existence of Israel, calling for a boycott of Israel. The panel was moderated by John Mearsheimer, who has made anti-Semitic claims that the pro-Israel lobby in the United States has undue influence over US foreign policy and that the lobby’s agenda is detrimental to US interests.

On October 27, 2015, Taylor attended another SJP-hosted talk featuring Eliat Maoz, who perpetuated a blood libel claiming that Israel’s wars with Hamas in Gaza are simply used as a testing ground for the weapons industry. Maoz described the "Occupied Palestinian Territories" as “the largest and most advanced weapon-testing laboratory,” and that Israel uses its operations as a means of marketing and exporting its technology and weapons abroad.

Cheering Violent Resistance

On May 15, 2014, Taylor on Facebook promoted a film, titled "Omar," by Hany Abu Assad — whose earlier film, “Paradise Now,” humanized suicide bombers. Official trailers for Omar describe one of the main protagonist’s fatal shooting of an Israeli soldier as “a deadly act of resistance” and the protagonist as a “freedom fighter.” The Jewish Israeli characters in the film are overwhelmingly portrayed as brutish, negative figures. SJP U of C promoted the film’s May 16, 2014 screening as part of its Nakba Weeks 2014. Taylor said in the post, “SUCH A GOOD MOVIE.”

U of C Divest

U of C Divest is a coalition of organizations including JVP UChicago, Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at U of C (SJP U of C)Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán (M.E.Ch.A) at UChicago and QUIP.

On March 28, 2016, the coalition launched the ‪‎UofC Divest campaign, calling on U of C’s College Council to support divestment from targeted companies doing business with Israel. The launch urged students to sign a petition supporting the resolution.

UofC Divest’s inaugural Facebook post claimed that "we act in direct response to the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement" — that lists the Council of National and Islamic Forces in Palestine as the first member of its national committee and takes its financing, inspiration and marching orders from foreign sources.

Also on March 28, 2016 UofC Divest hung banners throughout the (U of C) campus, supporting the divestment resolution. Dozens of BDS supporters held a rally, marching with a huge Palestinian flag through U of C’s central quad.

On March 31, 2016, Students at the U of C who were opposed to UofC Divest responded by launching a counter campaign — "University of Chicago Coalition for Peace."

On April 11, 2016, UofC Divest uploaded a video promoting its campaign. Rubinstein featured in the video, with SJP and JVP members. Rubinstein falsely branded Israel with "Settler colonialism" and “Apartheid.”

On April 14, 2016, two-weeks after the UofC Divest campaign’s launch, the College Council passed the resolution in an 8-4-3 vote.

In a marked departure from prior College Council policy, all photography and voice recordings were prohibited at the divestment vote. Representatives’ individual votes on amendments disassociating the resolution from the international BDS movement and asserting Israel’s right to exist were not captured on the record. Two attempts by the university newspaper to re-poll members of the Council yielded different numbers than the totals from that night — and indicated that at least two representatives misreported their votes.

Following the vote, some students sought to illustrate that UofC Divest was not about human rights, but about singling out Israel. They proposed a resolution to the college council to divest from Chinese weapon manufacturers due to China’s record of human rights violations and its occupation of Tibet. Council members condemned the resolution — and tabled it indefinitely— claiming it was political and offensive to Chinese students.

UofC Divest Promotional Video

On April 11, 2016, Taylor featured in a UofC Divest promotional videoThe UofC Divest promotional video featured SJP and JVP members. One member said — “this University shouldn’t be profiting off the murder of women and children.” Another student who presented herself as a recipient of financial aid complained that “it makes me really angry to know that the money used to fund my education comes from loads of human rights violations.” Another student said she supports UofC Divest because she doesn’t “support a state founded on Apartheid.” Diana Lozano, co-chair of M.E.Ch.A. —  speaking in Spanish claimed — “the same colonial forces in the U.S.-Mexico borders are the ones that are oppressing Gaza.”

SJP U of C and JVP UChicago - Exalting Terror

On November 2, 2015, JVP UChicago and SJP U of C erected a shrine honoring Palestinian terrorists killed during the upsurge of stabbings, car rammings and other terrorist attacks against Jews, that began in October 2015.

In October 2015, there was an upsurge in violence across Israel incited by Palestinian political and religious leaders. The wave of stabbings, known as the “Knife Intifada,” was characterized by young Palestinians throughout the country stabbing and attempting to stab Israeli civilians.

The shrine featured Palestinian terrorist Fadi Aloon, whom it portrayed as an innocent civilian was shot while "run[ning] from a racist mob."

Fadi Aloon was shot by Israeli security forces after he stabbed a 15-year-old Israeli boy. Several hours before the attack, Aloon posted “Either martyrdom or victory” on his Facebook page.

SJP U of C - Supporting Terrorists

On May 16, 2016, SJP U of C approvingly posted on Facebook the U.S. Palestinian Community Network (USPCN) stance on Palestinian terrorism against Israel.

The text stated: "Regardless of the charges brought against them by occupying Israeli military courts, we stand in defense of all Palestinian prisoners." The text continued, “[t]hose held by Israel are all prisoners of conscience and national heroes, and we reject the criminalization of our resistance. To defend and advocate for them is to support the sacred right of the Palestinians to National Liberation and Independence.”

The USPCN post quoted by SJP U of C urged taking "immediate action" by registering to attend Rasmea Odeh’s next status hearing and labeled her a “beloved community icon.”

On March 17, 2016 the SJP U of C Facebook page’s cover photo featured a likeness of Rasmea Odeh. On April 23, 2015, JVP UChicago members attended a fundraising event for her.

The SJP U of C Facebook cover photo also included an image of domestic terrorist Assata Shakur, who was convicted of killing a NJ State trooper and grievously wounding another in 1973. Shakur escaped from prison in 1979 and managed to flee to Cuba in 1984 — where she resides today. She is listed on the FBI Most Wanted Terror List under her legal name, Joanne Deborah Chesimard.

Further, the SJP U of C Facebook cover photo included an image of Commandanta Ramona, a deceased leader of the militant separatist Mexican group the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN).

Lastly, the cover photo included an image of Angela Davis. Davis made the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitive List in 1970, after being charged as a principal in an aggravated kidnapping and first-degree murder — for purchasing the shotgun used in the abduction and killing of a judge. Davis was eventually arrested — but later acquitted.

SJP U of C -Spreading Hatred of Israel

From October 26-30, 2015, SJP U of C launched its annual Israeli Apartheid Week — a five-day event dedicated to demonizing Israel.

One of the week’s events began with a panel moderated by John Mearsheimer, who is notorious for anti-Semitic claims that the “Israel Lobby” in the United States exercises undue influence over U.S. foreign policy and that the Lobby’s agenda is detrimental to U.S. interests.

The event also featured anti-police agitator Page May from We Charge Genocide and co-founder of the BDS movement Omar Barghouti, who rejects the existence of Israel.

On October 27, 2015, SJP U of C hosted a talk featuring Eliat Maoz, who propagated a blood libel, claiming that Israel’s wars with Hamas in Gaza are “a testing ground” for the weapons industry. Maoz described the “Occupied Palestinian Territories” as “the largest and most advanced weapon-testing laboratory,” and that Israel uses its operations as a means of marketing and exporting its technology and weapons abroad.

On April 24, 2015 —  a day after Israeli Independence Day — SJP U of C posted photos of their protest with JVP UChicago members. The protesters held Israel responsible for the creation and continuation of the Palestinian refugee problem. One sign suggested that Israel is engaged in an “ongoing genocide, ethnic cleansing and apartheid.”

SJP U of C - Hosting Anti-Israel Speakers

SJP U of C has a history of inviting Israel-haters to speak at events, including Dr. Leila Farsakh, Dr. Sa'ed Atshan and New York-based poet and writer Remi Kanazi.

On May 11, 2015, SJP U of C organized an event featuring Farsakh. Farsakh advocates for a one-state solution that would see the dissolution of Israel as a Jewish State. Farsakh attended Harvard's One State Conference in March 2012, where in response to a question concerning the fate of Israeli Jews were they to become disempowered by the voluntary dissolution of Israel, Farsakh reportedly suggested they could "reconnect with their Arabism."

On May 13, 2015, as part of Palestine Solidarity Week, SJP U of C organized an event featuring Atshan. Atshan has long rejected the two-state solution, does not accept that Israel is a democracy and wants the Jewish state to be dissolved and replaced with another. democratic state.

In 2012, Atshan wrote an article that accused Israel of "ethnic cleansing" and “colonization” — and roundly condemned Native American poet Joy Harjo for rejecting Palestinian calls to boycott Israel. Harjo posted on her Facebook page from Tel Aviv, saying: “Now my social media pages and message boxes are filled with a campaign to force a boycott, with messages of polarization, as if there is one way to poetry, resistance or empowerment.” Harjo went on to mention “an atmosphere of censure now in the ultimatum that I am being given to boycott.”

On January 17, 2012, SJP U of C hosted a panel event featuring Kanazi, condemning Israel’s 2008 - 2009 Operation Cast Lead. The event also featured Ali Abunimah, the co-founder of the anti-Israel online magazine Electronic Intifada.

SJP U of C - Propagating Blood Libels

On September 16, 2014, SJP U of C shared on Facebook an image of Palestinians massacred in the Sabra and Shatilla refugee camps in Lebanon by Lebanese Christian Phalangists — and suggested that Israel committed the massacre. The post further alleged that "63 noted Palestinian intellectuals in Sabra and Shatila were shot execution-style by Israeli forces."

On May 7, 2014, SJP U of C shared a poster on Facebook objecting to Israel’s Independence Day, and rejecting Israel’s right to exist. The poster urged: "Decolonize Palestine. Free Palestine." The poster accused Zionists of “celebrating” and trying “to normalize ethnic cleansing.” SJP U of C and JVP UChicago members paraded similar signs on the grounds of the U of C campus.

SJP U of C - Shutting down Free Speech

On February 21, 2016, SJP members opposed a lecture by Bassem Eid, founder of the Palestinian Human Rights Monitoring Group, who opposes the BDS movement. During the talk Eid was threatened with physical violence.

After Eid criticized the Palestinian Authority (PA) and Hamas for repression and human rights abuses against the Palestinians, protesters repeatedly interrupted Eid. A former student at Chicago’s Columbia College, who said he was from Gaza, yelled in Arabic, "I’m going to destroy this place!" Later, he said, “I’m going to kill this motherf**cker!” and “Wait until you go to your car!”

In October 2009, over a hundred SJP U of C and MSA U of C members disrupted a lecture by former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert visiting U of C, organized by the Harris School of Public Policy. Demonstrators shouted,"You deserve to be executed!" One agitator was dragged out by police, yelling “You’re a f**king snake! You goddamn pig!” The protesters turned violent against the police; some were arrested.

The anti-Israel agitators waved banners with Olmert’s likeness and the phrase "war criminal." Demonstrators denied Israel’s right to exist in any part of Palestine — chanting “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” Across the Palestinian political spectrum, from Hamas to the PA that phrase has always referred specifically to the destruction of Israel and expulsion of the Jews.

On February 26, 2013, SJP protested a talk by Israeli-American Law Professor Amos Guiora from the University of Utah. Protesters picketed and turned their chairs away from Guiora in the middle of his talk. One student continuously interrupted Guiora until being escorted out of the room.

JVP UChicago - Spreading Blood Libels

On August 21, 2014, JVP UChicago members serially disrupted speakers, including the former Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Michael Oren, at a Jewish Federation/Jewish United Fund of Chicago fundraising event, during Israel’s Operation Protective Edge. The JVP UChicago members also accused Israel, misleadingly, of "killing children."

JVP UChicago protesters outside the event chanted the slogans like "Free, free Palestine, Long Live Palestine" — and “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” used by Hamas leader, Khaled Mashal and others to call for the replacementof Israel with an Arab, Islamic state.

SJP

SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.

The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.

SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.

SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.

SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.

Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.

JVP

JVP was founded in Berkeley, California in 1996, as an activist group with an emphasis on the “Jewish tradition” of peace, social justice and human rights. The organization is currently led by Rebecca Vilkomerson and its board members include Israel critics Naomi Klein, Judith Butler, Noam Chomsky and Tony Kushner.

JVP, which generally employs civil disobedience tactics to disrupt pro-Israel speakers and events, consists of American Jews and non-Jewish “allies” highly critical of Israeli policies. A staunch supporter of the BDS movement, JVP claims to aim its campaigns at companies that either support the Israeli military (Hewlett-Packard) or are active in the West Bank (SodaStream).

Although several Jewish groups critical of Israeli policies, like J Street and Partners for a Progressive Israel, make efforts to operate within the mainstream American Jewish community, JVP functions outside. The group is often criticized for serving as a tokenized Jewish voice for the pro-Palestinian camp and is widely regarded as the BDS movement’s “Jewish wing.”

JVP denies the notion of “Jewish peoplehood” and has even gone so far as to refer to its own Ashkenazi (Jews who spent the Diaspora in European countries) leadership as “white supremacy inside of JVP.”

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has accused JVP of being “the largest and most influential Jewish anti-Zionist group in the United States,” and said the group “exploits Jewish culture and rituals to reassure its own supporters that opposition to Israel not only does not contradict, but is actually consistent with, Jewish value.”

The ADL also claimed that “JVP consistently co-sponsors rallies to oppose Israeli military policy that are marked by signs and slogans  comparing Israel to Nazi Germany, demonizing Jews and voicing support for groups like Hamas and Hezbollah.”

According to the ADL website, JVP “uses its Jewish identity to shield the anti-Israel movement from allegations of anti-Semitism and provide it with a greater degree of legitimacy and credibility.”
