Sueda Polat organized the pro-Hamas encampment at Columbia in April 2024. The encampment was also in support of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Sueda Polat is a Columbia student who was also a negotiator and spokesperson for the encampment, which began on April 17, 2024.

On April 26, 2024, Polat told [00:00:59] the Wall Street Journal in a video interview: “I’m a student organizer with CUAD, which is Columbia University Apartheid Divest. I’m also one of two negotiators. I’ve been here since [the encampment] began…”

On April 27, 2024, the Washington Post quoted Sueda as saying: “Students are prepared to confront militarized police violence. I think people underestimate how powerful and tough students are.”

On April 29, 2024, Polat said [00:00:42] in a press conference: “The university’s negotiations [with encampment leaders] evidenced an elementary understanding of the words boycott and divest, which have been at the heart of the student movement and at the heart of our encampment…” She continued [00:00:51]: “We demand divestment. We will not be moved unless by force…”

While Polat spoke, student protesters could be heard in the background chanting [00:05:39]: “There is only one solution, intifada revolution!”

The term “intifada,” which translates from Arabic as “uprising” or “insurrection,” carries the connotation of violence. Palestinian intifadas waged against Israel have been marked since 1987 by hundreds of hijackings, shootings, stabbings, bombings and suicide missions.

On May 3, 2024, the Wall Street Journal reported that Polat had helped set up the encampment, adding: “Polat said student organizers at Columbia learned the discipline and planning needed to pull off an effective protest movement not only from their work with veteran demonstrators and outside groups, but from participating in Black Lives Matter marches or student labor organizing.”

Columbia is located in New York, New York.
