Sarah Brammer-Shlay

Overview

Sarah Brammer-Shlay is a co-founder of IfNotNow (INN) who has participated in anti-Israel activist trips, spread incitement, led a demonstration in support of violent protesters and coordinated an INN protest against the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).

As a national leader of INN, Brammer-Shlay either made the decision or was complicit in INN’s decision to partner with the anti-Semitic American Muslims for Palestine (AMP).

She also attended an INN training event co-led by Taher Herzallah of AMP.

She led an INN event that repurposed Jewish rituals, has opposed the Birthright Jewish Heritage tour, spread hatred of Israel and promoted anti-Israel agitators. Brammer-Shlay also demonized the American Jewish community.

As of June 2019, the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College (RRC) in Philadelphia listed Brammer-Shlay as a Rabbinical student, slated to graduate in 2023.

Also as of June 2019, Brammer-Shlay’s LinkedIn page said she was a “Legislative and Political Assistant, National Nurses United” and a “Founder/Contributor” of “Real Life Athena: A Women’s Collective” since January 2013.

Brammer-Shlay’s LinkedIn page said she received a bachelor’s degree in Jewish Studies and Political Science from the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities (UMN) in 2012.

Activist Trips to Israel

In May 2017, Brammer-Shlay participated in an anti-Israel activist trip, where activists reportedly clashed with Israeli security personnel during a protest

On May 20, 2017, Brammer-Shlay was tagged in a photo on Facebook by INN with fellow INN activists on the trip.

On May 24, 2017, Brammer-Shlay took part in a disruption blocking the entrance to the Damascus Gate of the Old City of Jerusalem, during the Jerusalem Day parade. INN co-organized the disruption, along with Free Jerusalem and All That’s Left.

“All That’s Left”(ATL) is an “Anti Occupation Collective” that is “committed to building the diaspora angle of resistance,” based in Jerusalem. The group stages actions, protests and disruptions around Israel to protest Israeli policy and have partnered with anti-Israel groups like IfNotNow (INN) and Youth Against Settlements (YAS).

Brammer Shlay and other INN activists blocked the entrance to the Damascus Gate and refused [00:11:40] orders to leave. When the Israeli police physically removed the protestors individually, the protestors re-linked arms, before being physically removed again. Brammer-Shlay’s arm was broken during clashes when activists resisted removal by Israeli police.

On May 30, 2017, Brammer-Shlay authored an article in the Forward about the disruption writing: “I drove to Jerusalem that day ready to use my body to stop the violence of the occupation and prevent the right-wing March of the Flags from storming through the Muslim Quarter.”

Brammer-Shlay also said: “the occupation is a horrific system of violence and oppression that must be resisted at every opportunity.”

In 2016, Brammer-Shlay was a participant [00:07:37], along with JVP activists, on the “Occupation Is Not Our Judaism” tour with the Center for Jewish Nonviolence (CJNV)-organized and then a leader on another trip with CJNV.

As of June 2019, CJNV says on the About page on their website: “CJNV strengthens and uplifts a robust and connected movement of Palestinians, Israelis and diaspora Jews committed to active shared-resistance. These relationships of solidarity and co-resistance disrupt the material and ideological systems that uphold Occupation ..."

CJNV’s website also says that it partners with anti-Israel groups including Breaking the Silence (BtS) and Youth Against Settlements (YAS).

On July 15, 2016, Brammer-Shlay, along with INN activist Abigail Harris-Ridker, was tagged in an INN Facebook post that said: “Today, 9 IfNotNow leaders joined with members of the Center for Jewish Nonviolence...The morning ended with Israeli forces arresting 6 Jewish participants -- including IfNotNow Leader Erez Bleicher.”

Co-Founder of INN

On May 16, 2018, Brammer-Shlay gave a podcast interview to “The Great Battlefield,” where she explained [00:03:04] that she co-founded INN as a “movement to end the Jewish community’s support for the Occupation,” using [00:31:29] a primary strategy of “nonviolent direct action.”

Brammer-Shlay also clarified [00:30:15] that she and 15-20 INN co-founders took a year off, between 2014-2015, to strategize how INN would be able to gain the “amount of power we want and we think we can have.”

On April 13, 2018, Brammer-Shlay tweeted: “Direct action gets the goods. This tweet released after 9 @IfNotNowOrg members were arrested for demanding a statement from Sen Feinstein. #HowManyMore #IfNotNow.”

Spreading Incitement

On July 20, 2017, Brammer-Shlay tweeted: “Incredible acts of resistance in Jerusalem.”

Her tweet linked to a Haaretz piece celebrating the Palestinian “nonviolent protest that included an exceptional boycott on entering the Al-Aqsa compound” that “forced Israel into a corner from which the government is seriously considering giving in and removing the metal detectors it installed at the Mount’s entrances.”

The Temple Mount is the site of Judaism’s ancient First and Second temples and the holiest site in Judaism. The Mount refers to the plaza located above the Western Wall, in Jerusalem.

On July 21, 2017, Brammer-Shlay tweeted: “How have we as Jews gotten to a point where as a community we have dehumanized Palestinians to this point? #AlAqsa.”

On that same day, Brammer-Shlay tweeted: “I am so deeply saddened by my people's actions. I am inspired by the resilience and belief of the Palestinians who protested today #AlAqsa.”

On July 14, 2017, terrorists murdered two Israeli police officers outside the entrance to the Al-Aqsa compound, reportedly following claims that the Al-Aqsa Mosque was in danger. In response to the terror attack, Israel installed metal detectors and security cameras at the entrance to the holy site, which the authorities later removed, after further rioting and escalation in violence.

Supporting Violent Protesters

On April 4, 2018, Brammer-Shlay tweeted: “Thanks @btselem for your campaign urging Israeli soldiers to disobey orders & NOT shoot unarmed protestors at #TheGreatReturnMarch. Just donated $18, the numeric value of Hebrew word for life, because they actually seem to care about life. Wanna join me? https://www.btselem.org/donate.”

March participants sent scores of kites bearing explosive devices across Israel’s border to burn Israeli crops and homes. Participants also attempted to breach the border fence, which caused the Israeli Defense Forces to respond with live fire. Agitators also threw Molotov cocktails and firebombs, shot firearms and threw rocks.

Most of the Gazans who died between March 30 and April 6, 2018, were identified as terror operatives who were killed while carrying out terrorist attacks, rioting against IDF forces or attempting to breach the border fence between Israel and the Gaza Strip.

On May 14, 2018, Brammer-Shlay helped lead [00:00:43] an INN DC demonstration in Washington, D.C. to mourn [01:09:33] the Palestinians killed during the Great March of Return protests on Israel’s border with Gaza.

In May 2018, terror group Hamas instigated violent riots on the Israeli-Gaza border. Thousands of rioters attempted to breach Israel’s border fence, declaring their intention to harm Jews across the border under the pretext of “peaceful resistance.”

During the protest, Brammer-Shlay condemned [00:00:43] “Israel’s violent response to Palestinian non-violent protests.”

INN protestors also chanted [01:32:00] “We are horrified by Israel’s violent response to Palestinian non-violent protests.”

On May 16, 2018, a Hamas senior official, Salah al-Bardawil, stated that 50 out of 62 protesters killed during the May 14 Gaza border protest were Hamas operatives. Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) also claimed that three of its members were killed at the same protest.

The May 14, 2018, event also protested the U.S. government’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the decision to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

That same day, Brammer-Shlay was featured in an INN Instagram photo with the caption: “37 Palestinians have been killed today.” INN added: “How many more have to die before our community condemns the violence?”

On May 17, 2018, tweeted: “I added a🔥 to my name because my Jewish tradition tells me that bold leaders like Moses guided their communities to act in just and brave ways. 🔥 because killing non-violent Palestinian protestors is deeply immoral and we must stand up and oppose this violence.”

Also on May 17, 2018, Brammer-Shlay tweeted: “If you're more upset that Mourner's Kaddish was recited for non-Jews than the fact 62 people were killed, your priorities are really off.”

The Jewish ritual of the Mourner’s Kaddish is a prayer customarily reserved for close relatives or Jews murdered for being Jews.

Protesting Against AIPAC

On March 26, 2017, Brammer-Shlay helped coordinate an INN protest outside the Washington, D.C. venue of the AIPAC policy conference, where some activists chained themselves to the entrance of the conference center, to block entry [00:51:57] to the conference.

The stated mission of AIPAC is to “strengthen, protect and promote the U.S.-Israel relationship in ways that enhance the security of the United States and Israel.”

In an INN-produced video filmed during the protest and posted to Facebook, Thomas Corcoran, then-INN Digital Coordinator, said [00:35:37] that AIPAC had “perpetuated Islamophobia” for years.

Cornel West, anti-Israel Professor, spoke [00:43:42] at the rally. West has dismissed Jewish historical connections to Israel, labeled Israel an apartheid state and equated [00:00:23] the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) with Hamas.

Four INN activists purchased tickets to the conference, posing as AIPAC delegates, in order to gain access to the building. Once inside, the INN activists dropped banners from the center’s third floor, stating that they “reject AIPAC and the occupation,” before being removed by security.

On March 28, 2017, following the anti-AIPAC rally, INN’s activities were endorsed by Robert Warren Ray, a “Feature Writer” from the Neo-Nazi website the Daily Stormer.

Ray wrote on the Daily Stormer: “I am officially endorsing the Jew vs Jew AIPAC protests...You’re doing our work for us. Keep it up.”

On March 27, 2017, Brammer-Shlay participated in an INN-organized training event in Washington D.C., titled: “ResistAIPAC Anti-Islamophobia Training,” that was “developed and facilitated in coordination” with Taher Herzallah, the Associate Director of Outreach and Grassroots Organizing for AMP.

The training event’s Facebook page promised to “continue the theme of the day with an action” that focused on the ways “AIPAC supports Islamophobia.”

The INN organizers wrote they were “excited to be joined by” Ramah Kudaimi, the Director of Programs and Operations for U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights (USCPR), a coalition of American-based anti-Israel organizations, which lobbies the U.S. Congress to adopt anti-Israel policies and to end support for Israel.

INN reported that the event was attended by “55 IfNotNow members from Washington D.C, Boston, Philadelphia, and New York City.”

They also reported that the training session looked at “messages of Islamophobia” and “focused on the ways the Jewish institutions in which many of us grew-up teach and propagate these messages.”

INN then listened to Herzallah go into “greater detail about various Jewish institutions that perpetuate Islamophobia support the occupation.”

The training event was followed by a protest outside of AIPAC's Conference at the Mt. Vernon Convention Center that evening to focus “on the ways AIPAC supports Islamophobia.”

At the protest, INN organizer Jill Raney said that the training earlier that day taught [00:22:10] her how Islamophobia is closely tied to the “American support for the Occupation.”

During the protest, one leader claimed [00:30:18] that AIPAC is “Islamophobic” and “peddles Islamophobia.” Another INN speaker took the bullhorn to explain  [00:09:04] that he came out to “make sure that we continue to resist the awful influence that AIPAC has on the Jewish community and our country as a whole.”

Repurposing Jewish Rituals

On August 5, 2014, Brammer-Shlay led [00:15:18] an INN DC vigil outside of the national office of the Jewish Federation of North America (JFNA), timed to coincide with the Tisha B’Av fast day.

Tisha B’Av, regarded as the saddest day in the Jewish calendar, is a day of mourning for the destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem.

Brammer-Shlay posted to the Facebook event: “Remember to please wear black and if your religious conviction calls for it any religious clothing that feels right to you.”

The INN vigil called on the JFNA to “condemn the actions of the Israeli government in Gaza.”

During the vigil, one INN leader accused [00:03:19] Israel of the “indiscriminate killing of civilians and especially children. Attacks on UN schools and shelters.”

In a 2018 podcast interview, Brammer-Slay noted [00:14:50] that the 2014 INN demonstration was designed with the intention to say the Mourner’s Kaddish for Palestinians killed.

Opposing Jewish Heritage Tour

Brammer-Shlay was reportedly INN’s spokesperson for their #NotJustAFreeTrip campaign, targeting Birthright Israel.

Birthright Israel is a heritage trip to Israel for Jewish young adults from across the world.

On June 28, 2018, Brammer-Shlay tweeted: “The world watched as over 100 Palestinians were killed this spring. 40,000 Jews every year go on #Birthright trips and the trip doesn’t teach adequately about the occupation. 5 courageous Jews decided enough they needed to see it for themselves. Birthright is #NotJustAFreeTrip.”

The hashtags “#NotJustAFreeTrip” and “#NoSuchThingAsAFreeTrip” are from an IfNotNow campaign titled: “Not Just a Free Trip” that claimed: “Birthright’s programming has been funded by right-wing donors and designed to obscure, rationalize, and defend the Israeli Occupation.”

Five INN activists staged a walkoff of their Birthright Israel trip, in June 2018.

On July 16, 2018, Brammer-Shlay promoted on Twitter INN’s #NotJustAFreeTrip campaign, multiple times.

On July 19, 2018, Brammer-Shlay tweeted: “#NotJustAFreeTrip” and attached a NowThis tweet and video of INN activist Elon Glickman disrupting a Birthright trip and then taking part in an INN-staged walk-off from the trip.

Spreading Hatred of Israel

On January 27, 2013, Brammer-Shlay tweeted: “Forced sterilization is what happened to Ashkenazi Jews in Germany. Israel, why are you doing the same to our sisters from Ethiopia?”

On January 8, 2014, Brammer-Shlay tweeted: “@dreamhampton @MsJamilaAisha Going to Hebron was one of the most disturbing things I have ever done. That city is apartheid.”

On July 17, 2014, during Operation Protective Edge (OPE), Brammer-Shlay tweeted: “but I gotta be real. Gazans are under attack right now and we cannot deny that as Jews. Israel is POWERFUL lets stop pretending otherwise.”

Israel commenced Operation Protective Edge (OPE) in July 2014, to stop rocket fire targeting Israeli civilians and to destroy Hamas attack tunnels.

On July 27, 2014, Brammer-Shlay tweeted: “Whether its saying Hamas is sacrificing children or using them as human shields, I see my people ridding themselves of all responsibilty.”

Throughout the summer of 2014 — during Operation Protective Edge (OPE) — Hamas's deployment of human shields was extensively documented and publicized. Hamas encouraged Gazans to act as human shields to frustrate Israeli efforts to avoid civilian casualties in Gaza.

On March 22, 2015, Brammer-Shlay tweeted: “Yes. What will it say about jews if one of our most public examples of Judaism is racism and apartheid? #JSt2015.”

On March 22, 2015, Brammer-Shlay tweeted: “Noam Schuster speaks about how white supremacy (my words) in Israel keeps Mizrachi and marginalized groups OUT of the left camp #JSt2015.”

On December 7, 2016, Brammer-Shlay tweeted: “The @ADL_National should do anti hate work but it's gotten tied up in defending racist state & lost focus on mission #JewishResistance.”

During a May 16, 2018, podcast interview to The Great Battlefield, Brammer-Shlay claimed [00:16:28] that “a massive human rights atrocity is happening, supported and administrated by our people in Israel.”

Promoting Anti-Israel Agitators

On October 16, 2016, Brammer-Shlay tweeted: “‘A big part of nonviolent activism is being creative and flexible’-@Issaamro. Always inspiring to hear Issa speak. #PalRights2016.”

Anti-Israel agitator Issa Amro is known for vandalism and attacks on Israeli soldiers and civilians. Amro heads the Youth Against Settlements (YAS) movement, an anti-Israel organization based in Hebron that promotes anti-Semitism, rock-throwing and violence against Israelis.

On December 22, 2017, Brammer-Shlay tweeted: “This rabbinical student says #FreeAhedTamimi,” along with a photo of herself holding a sign with the same wording.

Ahed Tamimi has a long history of physically attacking Israeli soldiers. Tamimi is the daughter of Bassem Tamimi, who is known for exploiting young children as political props in staged confrontations with Israeli soldiers.

On November 29, 2018, Brammer-Shlay tweeted: “Same. Was proud to stand with @lsarsour [Linda Sarsour] then and still am. My beautiful Jewish people, let’s remember who our true enemies and allies are. Linda is our ally in the fight for liberation.”

She embedded a tweet by INN leader Yonah Lieberman who wrote: “I was proud to sign this letter in support of @lsarsour back in May, in addition to dozens of Jewish leaders. Is incredibly telling that the language could have easily been written today. My dear Jewish community: we can and must do better.”

Brammer-Shlay’s tweet referred to a June 1, 2017 statement she signed, titled: “Jewish Leaders Statement Against Attacks on Linda Sarsour.” The statement condemned attacks on Sarsour and declared the signers’ “commitment to working alongside [Sarsour] for a more just and equal society.”

Linda Sarsour has frequently used the word “Zionist” as a pejorative and has tweeted that “nothing is creepier than Zionism.” She has aligned with noted anti-Semite Louis Farrakhan, dismissed [00:07:45] those who see her alignment with Farrakhan as problematic and slammed the “Jewish Media” for calling attention to it.

At Farrakhan’s 2015 #JusticeOrElse March, Sarsour asserted [00:00:36]: “The same people who justify the massacres of Palestinian people and call it ‘collateral damage’ are the same people who justify the murder of young black men and women.”

Also on November 29, 2018, Brammer-Shlay tweeted: “I kinda wanna write a long Facebook post about the unjust firing of @marclamonthill and simultaneously want to curl up in bed and do all the other work I need to do. Let’s see what wins.”

In November 2018, Marc Lamont Hill was fired from his position as a contributor to CNN (Cable News Network) following controversial comments he made during a meeting held at the United Nations for an “International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.”

During the meeting, Hill reportedly whitewashed Palestinian violence and accused Israel of “state violence and ethnic cleansing.” He also called for a “free Palestine from the river to the sea.”

In September 2018, during a U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights (USCPR) conference, Hill insinuated [00:31:01] that Israel poisons Palestinian water and seemingly approved [00:30:34] of violence against Israelis.

Demonizing the American Jewish Community

On September 24, 2017, Brammer-Shlay promoted INN’s #YouNeverToldMe campaign on Facebook and linked to an article she wrote in the Forward where she said: “I am speaking out as part of the #YouNeverToldMe campaign.”

The #YouNeverToldMe campaign accuses American Jewish institutions of providing one-sided education “about the occupation.”

The campaign features INN members providing testimonials about their Israel-related educational experiences with different Jewish organizations, including United Synagogue Youth (USY), Camp Ramah, the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) and the Solomon Schechter Day School Network.

Some of the testimonials were published as op-ed pieces in publications including The Forward, the JewSchool and 972mag.

On August 12, 2016, Brammer-Shlay and fellow INN leader Ethan Miller were interviewed by Radio Sputnik about their reaction to the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston (JCRC)’s condemnation of the Movement for Black Lives (M4BL) policy platform.

The JCRC of Greater Boston issued a statement on August 3, 2016, saying that it was “deeply dismayed” by elements of the M4BL policy platform, “specifically the co-opting and manipulation of a movement addressing concerns about racial disparities in criminal justice in the United States in order to advance a biased and false narrative about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.”

Brammer Shlay said [00:08:44] she was upset by JCRC Boston’s statement and decision [00:09:20] “to stand by Israel at all costs.” She also claimed [00:14:55] “what specifically you call this, whatever this atrocity is, that shouldn’t be a barrier to participating in the fight to end the occupation”

The JCRC statement continued: “JCRC cannot and will not align ourselves with organizations that falsely and maliciously assert that Israel is committing ‘genocide.’ We denounce...the ‘BDS’ movement. We reject participation in any coalition that seeks to isolate and demonize Israel singularly amongst the nations of the world.”

Brammer-Shlay said [00:11:26] that INN stands “strongly in support with the movement for Black lives and pushing our community to end our community’s support for the occupation.”

An INN statement issued August 7, 2016 claimed: “Instead of embracing the core values of the Movement for Black Lives — dignity and freedom for all people — the JCRC has chosen to prioritize its support for Israel and endless occupation.”

On November 18, 2015, Brammer-Shlay tweeted: “To my fellow white Jews we must acknowledge how we as a community have accepted and perpetuated white supremacy.”

On August 6, 2014, during OPE, Brammer-Shlay tweeted: “The amount I see Jewish institutions justify the murder of Palestinian children is disgusting. #ifnotnow #NotInMyName.”

On August 3, 2014, Brammer-Shlay authored an article in the Twin Cities Daily Planet titled: “Not in my name: A call to American Jewish organizations during Operation Protective Edge.”

In her article, Brammer-Shlay labeled the American Jewish support for Israel “atrocious” and accused the American Jewish community of viewing “Palestinians as less than human.”

IfNotNow (INN)

IfNotNow (INN) is an anti-Israel organization founded in 2014, in response to Israel’s Operation Protective Edge (OPE) against Hamas.

INN claims to be “young Jews angered by the overwhelmingly hawkish response of American Jewish institutions” to OPE. INN presents three demands on its website: “Stop the War on Gaza, End the Occupation, and Freedom and Dignity for All.”

INN defines “the Occupation as the military rule over Palestinians in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza,” which is land Israel has controlled for nearly 50 years since the 1967 Six-Day War. However, INN leaders have made [00:34:32] the claim [00:13:49] at protests that the occupation is 70 years long, referring to Israel’s founding in 1948.

INN actions have aimed to demonize [00:38:13] Israel, harass [00:05:44] mainstream American Jewish organizations like the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and decrease support for Israel among American Jews.

INN has used “public action and imaginative ritual” to achieve its goals, including disruptions where activists were arrested.

One of the high-profile arrests occurred at a May 2018 disruption at a U.S. Senator’s office in Washington, D.C. to protest legislation against the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

At the same incident, INN used [00:07:17] the Jewish ritual of the Mourner’s Kaddish prayer to mourn [00:09:10] protesters who were killed during the Hamas-organized and funded Great March of Return riots on the Israel-Gaza border.

INN activists have also staged and promoted walk-offs from Birthright Israel trips, a heritage trip to Israel for young Jewish adults from across the world.

INN claims to take no position on the BDS movement and that it is “open to any who seek to shift the American Jewish public away from the status quo that upholds the Occupation.” However, INN organizes with pro-BDS, anti-Israel organizations including American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) and Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP).
