Salman Shalan
Overview
Salman Shalan honored his brother after her carried out a terrorist attack. He has also glorified members of the terrorist group Hamas, praised other terrorists and expressed support for violent protesters. In March 2019, a University of South Florida (USF) web page listed Shalan as the secretary of the USF chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), from January 1 to May 17, 2019.
As of November 2019, Shalan’s LinkedIn page said he was a student at USF from 2018 to 2019. His LinkedIn page also said he was a Pharmacy Technician at CVS Pharmacy since June 2017 in the “Tampa/St. Petersburg, Florida Area.”
In February 2019, Shalan posted to Facebook a photo of himself tabling for the Arab Student Association (ASA) at USF, with the comment “Always representing [Palestinian flag].
Honoring a Terrorist
On February 26, 2019, Shalan posted to Facebook a video honoring his younger brother, Mahmoud Shalan, who reportedly was killed while carrying out a stabbing attack against Israeli soldiers manning a checkpoint near Beit-El, on February 26, 2016. Mahmoud was reportedly 17 years old at the time of his attack. On May 15, 2018, Shalan posted on Facebook a photo of his brother’s tombstone and wrote: “وطنا غالي بدم الشهداء الذي يعطر ارض بلادنا بدمائكم الغالي ... رحم الله ارواح الشهداء الأبطال اجمعين. [A precious homeland with the blood of the martyrs which perfumes the ground of our lands with your precious blood … May Allah have mercy on all the souls of the heroic martyrs].”
On February 26, 2017, Shalan posted on Facebook another image honoring his brother. The image included a logo depicting a masked youth with a Palestinian flag, firing a slingshot with hashtags below it that translated into English: “#Jerusalem_Intifada. #Mahmoud_Sha’alan.” The image Shalan posted also showed the Dome of the Rock on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount.
Since the early 2000s, the term “intifada,” which translates from Arabic as “uprising” or “insurrection,” has carried the connotation of violence.
The hashtag “#Jerusalem Intifada” was initiated during a period of incitement and violence in 2015, known as the “Knife Intifada.”
In October 2015, there was an upsurge in violence across Israel incited by Palestinian political and religious leaders. The wave of stabbings, known as the “Knife Intifada,” was characterized by young Palestinians throughout the country stabbing and attempting to stab Israeli civilians. The attacks were incited by Palestinian leaders propagating the libel that Israel intended to desecrate the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.
Glorifying Hamas
On December 13, 2018, Shalan posted to Facebook a photo montage honoring his late brother Mahmoud, Hamas terrorist Saleh Omar al-Barghouthi and Ashraf Na’alwa who killed two Israelis in an October 2018 attack. On February 6, 2018, Shalan posted to Facebook a photo honoring his brother, Mahmoud and Hamas terrorist, Ahmad Jarrar.
Ahmad Jarrar, the son of a senior Hamas commander Nasser Jarrar, was reportedly the head operative behind the drive-by shooting murder of Rabbi Raziel Shevach, in January 2018.
Praising Terrorists
On January 1, 2019, Shalan posted to Facebook a photo featuring Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) leaders Yasser Arafat, Salah Kalaf and Khalil Al-Wazir.Shalan referred to them by their nicknames and wrote: “ابا عمار و ابا جهاد و ابا اياد، ، أنتم فكرة، و الفكرة لا تموت. انتم رمز القضية، و من وجهنا لطريق الحرية. رحمة الله عليكم يا نعم القادة [Abu Ammar and Abu Jihad and Abu Iyad, you’re an idea, and the idea does not die. You are the symbol of the (Palestinian) cause, and from our face to the way of freedom. May Allah’s mercy be upon o choicest leaders].”
Yasser Arafat was the former leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and is known by some as the “father of modern terrorism.” Arafat reportedly told Arab diplomats in a secret meeting in 1996: "We will make life unbearable for Jews by psychological warfare and population explosion. Jews will not want to live among Arabs. I have no use for Jews. They are and remain Jews."
Salah Kalaf was second in command of the PLO behind Yasser Arafat. He selected the terrorists who carried out the 1972 Munich Massacre, where 11 Israeli athletes and coaches were killed at that year’s Olympic games.
Abu Jihad (Khalil Al-Wazir) headed the PLO terror organization's “military wing” and planned many deadly terror attacks, including the Maghrabi bus hijacking, the most lethal in Israeli history. The attackers killed 38 civilians, including 13 children, and wounded 71 others.
On December 20, 2018, Shalan posted to Facebook a photo of an assault rifle with a sniper scope, lying atop a display honoring Basel Al Araj. Shalan commented: “ بــ رشاشــين و كتـــاب و كوفيـــة قاومـت و اســتشهدت.رحمة الله عليك يا باسل و الرحمة على شهدائنا اجمعين. [...with two machine guns, a book (Quran), and a kefiyyeh you resisted and got martyred. Allah’s mercy upon O Basel, and mercy upon all our martyrs combined].”
Basel Al Araj was killed in a shoot-out with Israeli troops during an arrest raid. He had been suspected of belonging to a terror cell planning to carry out attacks on Israeli targets. Two M-16 assault rifles and an improvised Carlo-style submachine gun were found inside his home.
On April 27, 2017, Shalan posted to Facebook a picture of himself at his brother’s funeral, overlaid with an image that promoted the “Dignity Strike” in Arabic.
“Dignity Strike” refers to a hunger strike initiated by Marwan Barghouti on April 16, 2017. More than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners participated in the strike – most them also convicted for acts of terrorism. Barghouti headed the Palestinian Authority (PA) terrorist Tanzim force and founded the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades. He was sentenced to five consecutive life terms by an Israeli civilian court for some of his crimes, including his role in the Sbarro Cafe bombing.
On November 8, 2016, Shalan posted to Facebook a photo glorifying Ahmed Manasra. Shalan began his post: “...يا رمزٓ الشموخِ [O symbol of glory … ].”
Ahmed Manasra (sometimes spelled Mansara) and his 15-year-old cousin Hassan went on a stabbing spree in Jerusalem on October 12, 2015, during the Knife Intifada. They critically wounded a 13-year-old boy and moderately wounded a 25-year-old man. The spree ended when police shot Hassan and a passing motorist hit Ahmed. Ahmed was taken to an Israeli hospital. He admitted to investigators: “I went there to stab Jews.” He was later tried and convicted on two counts of attempted murder.
Supporting Violent Protesters
Most of the Gazans who died between March 30 and April 6, 2018, were identified as terror operatives who were killed while carrying out terrorist attacks, rioting against IDF forces or attempting to breach the border fence between Israel and the Gaza Strip.
On April 14, 2018, Shalan posted on Facebook that he was “attending” the SJP USF co-hosted event titled: “Great Return March: Tampa Rally.”
The event’s Facebook description said: “Moved by the Great Return March in Gaza, the Palestinian diaspora in Tampa Bay is steadfast in our right to return to our lands as stipulated by UN Resolution 194.”
UN Resolution 194 defined principles for “returning Palestine refugees to their homes,” but was unanimously rejected by Arab nations following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
The BDS movement cites the UN resolution as the foundation for the “right of return,” which has been discredited as a means to eliminate Israel.
Anti-Israel Activism
On March 3, 2019, Shalan posed with other activists and Eran Efrati for a photo posted to Instagram by SJP USF. Efrait is a former researcher with Breaking the Silence (BtS) and a board member of the anti-Israel Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) organization.SJP USF hosted Efrati on February 25, 2019 and promotions for the event quoted Efrati saying he was a “the terrorist” when he served as an Israeli soldier.
In July 2016, Breaking the Silence (BTS) was discredited by Israel’s investigative Channel 10 TV show, HaMakor (The Source). HaMakor presented a report revealing that a substantial number of BTS testimonies are untrue or distorted.
On October 13, 2018, Shalan shared to Facebook an SJP USF video celebrating an SJP USF event held the day before, that featured anti-Israel activist Benjamin Ladraa. Shalan also appeared in an SJP USF Instagram photo with Ladraa on the day of SJP USF’s event.
On October 10, 2018, SJP USF posted an Instagram photo featuring Shalan and other SJP USF activists in front of a display that portrayed Israel’s security barrier as an “Apartheid Wall.” The display also promoted the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.
Israel’s security barrier, 97 percent of which is a low chain-link barrier, was built as a deterrent to Palestinian terror attacks. The concrete portions of the fence were built in response to Palestinian sniper attacks.
SJP USF - Leaders Idolizing Terrorists and Spreading Anti-Semitism
In March 2019, SJP USF officers included vice president Abdallah Junio Mansour, who has a history of spreading anti-Semitism on Facebook and secretary Salman Shalan.Mansour and Shalan have both expressed support for Hamas operatives, as well as other terrorists and idolized terrorist Yasser Arafat.
SJP USF - Supporting Violent Riots
On April 11, 2018, SJP USF posted an Instagram photo for an April 14, 2018 rally it co-sponsored in downtown Tampa, FL. The rally was in support of “The Great Return March” riots that had begun two weeks earlier, in Gaza.On March 30, 2018, some 30,000 Palestinians in Gaza approached Israel’s border to take part in “Land Day Protests” or the “March of Return.” The violent demonstrations were instigated by Hamas on the Israeli-Gaza border. Participants declared their intention to harm Jews across the border under the pretext of “peaceful resistance.”
March participants sent scores of kites bearing explosive devices across Israel’s border to burn Israeli crops and homes. Rioters also made numerous attempts to breach Israel’s border fence, which caused the Israeli Defense Forces to respond with live fire.
On May 14, 2018, SJP USF posted on Instagram: “52 Palestinians have been killed on the border of Gaza by Israeli snippers [sic] as the US embassy opens in Jerusalem.”
On May 16, 2018, senior Hamas official, Salah al-Bardawil, stated that 50 out of 62 protesters killed during the May 14 Gaza border protest were Hamas operatives. Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) also claimed that three of its members were killed at the same protest.
On October 27, 2018, SJP USF claimed on Instagram: “For over six months the people of Gaza have been peacefully protesting at the border …”
In April 2018, media reports confirmed [00:00:20] the March of Return protesters’ breaches and attempted breaches of Israel’s border fence, some by armed Palestinians. One Hamas leader declared [00:00:30]: “We will take down the border [with Israel] and we will tear out their hearts from their bodies.”
SJP USF - Demonizing Israel
On February 22, 2019, SJP USF posted an Instagram image promoting its event featuring Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) board member Eran Efrati. The SJP USF image quoted Efrati as saying that as an Israeli soldier, he was “the terrorist.”On February 6, 2019, SJP USF posted an Instagram image promoting BDS and accusing Israel of“settler colonialism” and “apartheid.” The image called for a boycott of a performance by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO) in Sarasota, Florida.
On October 8, 2018, SJP USF posted an Instagram video of its activists making a display portraying Israel’s security barrier as an “Apartheid Wall.” The display promoted BDS and was for an event on campus the next day.
On January 6, 2019, SJP USF posted an Instagram image claiming that Israel simultaneously will “play the victim” and “commit war crimes.”
On September 7, 2018, SJP USF posted on Instagram that Israel has a “genocidal, ethnic cleansing project.”
SJP
SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.
The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.
SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.
SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.
SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.
Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.
