Layla Sharifi

Layla Sharifi was arrested at the pro-Hamas encampment at Columbia in April 2024. The encampment was in support of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

On May 20, 2024, The Freelance News reported that Sharifi was arrested at the pro-Hamas encampment at Columbia in April 2024. Sharifi was charged with “third-degree criminal trespass…punishable by up to three months in jail, a year of probation and/or up to a $500 fine.”

As of August 2024, Sharifi’s Instagram bio said: “...🍉.”

The watermelon has been appropriated by terrorists and anti-Israel activists as a symbol of Palestinian "resistance" to "Israeli occupation," as it shares the Pan-Arab colors. It gained widespread popularity and usage following the Hamas terror attacks of October 7, 2023.
