Abeer Husein
Overview
Abeer Husein has demonized Israel as an activist with Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP). Hussein was reportedly the vice president of SJP at the College of Staten Island (CSI SJP), in 2015.In 2015 Husein was reportedly a student at CSI, part of the City University of New York (CUNY) and graduated in May of that year. Husein was a History major with a concentration in Adolescent Education, and a minor in English Literature. In May 2017, Husein tweeted that she was “Officially a masters graduate.”
As of September, 2017, Husein posted on Facebook that she started working as an adjunct professor at CSI. As of September 2019, her Facebook page indicated that she remained an adjunct professor at CSI.
Demonizing Israel
In November 2013, Husein posed for a photo posted to Facebook by CSI SJP as part of a “Right to Education” week, sponsored by CSI SJP and initiated by Birzeit University (Birzeit).CSI SJP posted a photo album on Facebook that was captioned: “CSI SJP demonstrates as a part of right to education week.”
The Right to Education Tour brings Birzeit University students to U.S. campuses, where they claim that Israel is obstructing the rights of Palestinians to higher education. This claim mischaracterizes the sweeps Israeli security forces have made to shut down terror cells operating on the Birzeit campus, including cells linked to Hamas.
Anti-Israel Activism
On November 4, 2014, Husein promoted a CSI SJP event on Facebook called: “Gaza 2014: Chronicle of a Death Foretold.” Husein urged: “Come, come, come! This is an event you don't want to miss!”The event’s Facebook description said it would feature two anti-Zionist Israeli Jews, Eran Efrati of Breaking the Silence and Maya Wind, an activist who refused to serve in the IDF.
In July 2016, Breaking the Silence (BTS) was discredited by Israel’s investigative Channel 10 TV show, HaMakor (The Source). HaMakor presented a report revealing that a substantial number of BTS testimonies are untrue or distorted.
On March 6, 2014, Husein participated in an “Israeli Apartheid wall” event at CSI, held as part of Israeli Apartheid Week.
During the event, Husein and other CSI SJP members posed for a photo campaign. The CSI SJP members held signs, reading: “The Right to End Apartheid,” “Reclaim justice” and “The right to live free of humiliation.” Husein held a sign saying: “Where Is Justice?” while other members posed holding signs that demonized Israeli security checkpoints.
Israeli checkpoints were built to prevent terror attacks, such as suicide bombings, against Israel's civilian population.
The Apartheid Wall featured a montage of maps of Israel, known as “the Map That Lies.” The “Map That Lies” is a propaganda poster that presents lands once controlled by Britain, Egypt and Jordan as autonomous “Palestinian land” purportedly stolen by Israel.
On June 7, 2013, Husein was tagged in a photo posted by CSI SJP to Facebook, celebrating their anti-Israel activity on campus. The photo featured an article in the CSI newspaper “The Banner” about SJP receiving their club charter and their first event protesting Israeli Independence Day on campus.
On May 12, 2013, Husein was featured in a CSI SJP “Nakba Week” photo campaign on Facebook, holding a sign with the hashtag: “# We will Return.”
The term “Nakba” is generally translated as “catastrophe” in Arabic, referring to the outcome of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It is a term often used to delegitimize the creation of the State of Israel by defining it as a catastrophe.
The “right of return” is a Palestinian demand discredited as a means to eliminate Israel.
In the CSI SJP Nakba Week photo campaign some CSI SJP members posed with signs similar to Husein’s while while T-shirts featuring Leila Khaled and claiming: “Resistance is not Terrorism.” SJP’s comments on the photo campaign promoted the T-shirts
Leila Khaled is a leading member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and participated in the hijacking of TWA Flight 840 in 1969 and El Al Flight 219 in 1970. As of 2017, Khaled was a member of PFLP's Political Bureau. Khaled has said that the second intifada failed because it was not violent enough, advocated [00:36:07] for the use of children in terror activities and compared Zionists to Nazis.
Husein posed for a photo with disgraced anti-Israel professor Steven Salaita and other supporters of Salaita, for a photo CSI SJP posted to Facebook on November 19, 2014. The picture was taken after Salaita addressed the group about being censored for his anti-Israel hate speech.
CSI SJP - Supporting Anti-Israel Agitators
On March 10, 2015, CSI SJP shared a photo campaign organized by SJP at Hunter College to support Lina Khattab.Khattab was detained on December 13, 2014, and sentenced to six months jail time on February 16, 2015 for throwing rocks, while celebrating the 47th anniversary of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP)’s founding.
On January 29, 2015, CSI SJP posted an article on Facebook supporting disgraced anti-Israel Professor Steven Salaita. The CSI SJP Facebook post said: “Down with foreign government lobbies bribing universities to silent dissenters and organizers against settler-colonial states!”
CSI SJP - Spreading an Anti-Israel Conspiracy Theory
On February 22, 2015, CSI SJP posted on Facebook an article stating: “Hundreds of Palestinians flee as Israel opens dams into Gaza Valley.”The article claimed that “hundreds of Palestinians were evacuated from their homes after Israeli authorities opened a number of dams near the border, flooding the Gaza Valley in the wake of a recent severe winter storm.”
Al-Jazeera shared and later retracted the story, admitting: “In southern Israel, there are no dams of the type which can be opened.”
CSI SJP - Demonizing Israel
On December 5, 2014 CSI SJP uploaded to Facebook a video of their activists chanting [00:00:09]: “How do you spell racist? NYPD! How do you spell murderers? IDF!”SJP
SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.
The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.
SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.
SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.
SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.
Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.
