Mohammad Fadel
Overview
Mohammad Fadel [Mohammad H. Fadel] is a professor who has spread anti-Semitism and defended Hamas terrorists.Fadel participated in the pro-Hamas encampment at the University of Toronto (UofT) in May 2024 and the Columbia University (Columbia) encampment in April 2024.
Fadel has alsopromoted hatred of Zionists, Israelis and Israel on social media.
Fadel is a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.
As of May 2024, Fadel was listed as a member of the “Programmatic Board” of the “Hearing Palestine” initiative at UofT, which states its mission is to “Provide an intellectual hub for the study of Palestine.”
Also as of May 2024, Fadel was listed on the UofT website as a full professor in the Faculty of Law. He had cross-appointments in the Department of Religion and the Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations. UofT is located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
As of August 2024, Fadel’s LinkedIn profile said he received a PhD in Near and Middle Eastern studies from the University of Chicago (UChicago) in 1995. He also graduated from the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Law with a JD in 1999.
As of the same date, Fadel’s LinkedIn said he was located in Toronto, Ontario.
As of May 2024, Fadel went by the username “Fascists Making Deserts, Calling It Peace” and used the handle “@Shanfaraa” on X.
As of June 2023, Fadel used the handle “@Shanfaraa” on X, where he had the username: “What’s a little ethnic cleansing between friends?”
Anti-Semitism
Anti-Israel activists refer to Gaza as a “concentration camp” because of the United Nations-approved [pp. 39–41], Israeli-Egyptian blockade of Gaza. The blockade was implemented in 2011 to stop Hamas from acquiring more sophisticated rockets.
In the same November 21, 2023 thread, Fadel tweeted: “#Zionist state building entailed #dispossession of the #Palestinians, their #expulusion, herding them into #ghettos and rendering them stateless through denationalization. Now, it is searching for the final solution in #Gaza.”
Fadel wrote his tweet in the wake of the Hamas terror attacks of October 7, 2023. The attacks left over 1,200 Israeli Jews dead, hundreds kidnapped and thousands wounded. Israel retaliated with a war called “Swords of Iron.”
The assertion that Jews secretly control the Western governments through banking and finance is traced to the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a fabricated anti-Semitic text that portrays wealthy Jews as conspiring to take over the world. This anti-Semitic conspiracy theory has often employed the imagery from Nazi cartoons that depict Jews as octopuses encircling the globe.
On December 9, 2021, referring to Israel’s security barrier, Fadel tweeted: “#Gaza is a concentration camp whose fences -- not borders -- are enforced with lethal military force far exceeding what East Germany used in the case of the #BerlinWall. #TearDownTheWall!”
Israel’s security barrier, 97 percent of which is a low chain-link barrier, was built as a deterrent to Palestinian terror attacks. The concrete portions of the fence were built in response to Palestinian sniper attacks.
The “right of return” is a Palestinian demand discredited as a means to eliminate Israel. International law mandates no absolute right of return and UN Resolution 194, which defined principles for “refugees wishing to return to their homes,” was unanimously rejected by Arab nations following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
On June 13, 2019, Fadel tweeted a quote of Israeli journalist Amira Hass saying: “Amira Hass: ‘Let me be blunt: #Gaza is a Huge Concentration Camp’ #Israel #Palestine #Apartheid #BDS / juancole.com/2015/07/amira-....”
On June 1, 2015, Fadel tweeted the title of a Mondoweiss article: “#Gaza is a concentration camp, and it's an American delusion not to recognize that -- Weschler mondoweiss.net/2014/07/concen….”
Defending Hamas Terrorists
On May 19, 2021, Fadel tweeted: “While it couldn’t find evidence corroborating #Israel’s claims that #Hamas uses #humanshields, it found plenty of evidence that #Israel used #Palestinians as human shields.”Fadel’s tweet was part of a thread replying to another Twitter user stating that Hamas was using human shields during Israel’s Operation Guardian of the Walls (OGW) against terror groups in Gaza.
In May 2021, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorists fired over 4,300 rockets from Gaza at major population centers in Israel. Israel responded by launching OGW, carrying out targeted military strikes in Gaza.
On May 12, 2021, Fadel tweeted in response to a thread discussing an Israeli air force bombing of a building in Gaza. Twitter user @realDavidLeon wrote: “That’s what happens when Hamas hides behind civilians which is a #WarCrime.”
Fadel replied: “David, intentionally targeting a civilian building is a #warcrime. #Reprisal is not #selfdefense in #internationahumanitarianlaw. There was no military target there, only (allegedly) a #Hamas political operative.”
On November 23, 2020, Fadel tweeted: “At the same time, the most tenuous connections to groups like #Hamas can get you in jail, to say nothing of having your assets seized. Indeed, the #US will even go out of its way to manufacture facts to convict Muslims by inducing them into joining fake #terrorist conspiracies.”
Participation in the Pro-Hamas Encampment at UofT
On May 28, 2024, Fadel participated [00:04:49] in a faculty press conference in support of the pro-Hamas encampment UofT.On May 2, 2024, UofT Occupy for Palestine (Occupy UofT) activists “stormed down” fencing around UofT’s Kings College Circle and set up a pro-Hamas and pro-BDS encampment called the “People’s Circle for Palestine.” Protesters chanted [00:02:59] for “intifada” and celebrated “resistance” [00:02:45]. Both terms are calls for terrorism. Activists chanted [00:01:28; 00:02:21] for Israel’s destruction multiple times.
After the October 7, 2023 massacre of nearly 1,200 Israelis, the inverted red triangle -
- became a Hamas symbol. It appeared on large signs at the encampment and was featured in other encampment-related activism. Openly pro-Hamas marches began elsewhere in the city and ended at the encampment. In one incident, pro-Hamas activists punched a Jewish man, stole his Israeli flag and shouted anti-Semitic slurs.Protesters occupied [00:00:17] the area from May to July 2024, despite UofT warning they were trespassing. On July 3, 2024, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice issued an injunction at UofT’s request, requiring the encampment to be cleared. Occupy UofT dismantled the encampment and wrote a statement that ended: “Long live the intifada.”
Participating in the Pro-Hamas Encampment at Columbia
On April 26, 2024, Fadel posted on X: “I just left @Columbia where I got to talk to students and faculty at the #Palestine encampment. It was a personally very moving experience…” The post included multiple photos from the pro-Hamas encampment at Columbia. On April 17, 2024, Columbia students and anti-Israel activists set up what they called the “Gaza Solidarity Encampment” on the university's main lawn. The encampment was the first of its kind and reportedly inspired a wave of as many as 140 protest encampments across North American campuses and over 20 globally.
Encampment participants protested Israel’s war against Hamas and demanded that the universities “divest from companies and institutions that profit from Israeli apartheid, genocide and occupation…” At least 14 schools pledged to meet a number of the protester's demands. Some allowed police to dismantle the encampments, which led to mass arrests in a number of cases.
Protesters reportedly harassed Jewish students. Some blocked Jews from campus facilities, while others restricted access to only those wearing special wristbands or who declared they were "not a Zionist." Some Jewish students were told [00:00:02] to “go back to Poland” and [slide 3]: “Yahoodi [Jew], f**k you!” as they walked on campus.
Hatred of Zionists and Israelis
On April 30, 2024, Fadel tweeted: “It is not fair to lay responsibility for the extermination of #Palestinians exclusively on the #Zionists. It is unlikely they would have become so madly #genocidal without the support they receive from the west…”
On October 7, 2023, the day Hamas terrorists murdered 1,200 Israeli Jews and kidnapped hundreds more, Fadel tweeted: “Perhaps she is a security risk and being held in administrative detention, like thousands of Palestinians, adults and children.”
Fadel’s tweet was in response to another tweet featuring a photo of an Israeli woman, Shiri Bibas, with her two children, who were kidnapped by Hamas terrorists and held hostage in Gaza.
On Saturday, October 7, 2023, approximately 2,900 heavily armed Hamas terrorists breached Israel’s border with Gaza. They executed numerous war crimes on civilians, including mass murder, beheadings of children, rape of men and women, torture, kidnappings and mutilation.
Zionism is the belief that Jews have the right to self-determination in their own national home, and the right to develop their national culture.
On January 29, 2023, Fadel tweeted: “If #terrorism is never morally justified, a fortiori those who reject equality are morally estopped from condemning it. The deontic wickedness of terrorism requires recognition of human equality. #Zionists deny that fundamental premise.”
Fadel’s tweet was referring to a January 27, 2023 tweet from the @UN_Spokesperson Twitter account that said: “@antonioguterres strongly condemns today’s terrorist attack by a Palestinian perpetrator outside a synagogue in Jerusalem. / There is never any excuse for acts of terrorism. They must be clearly condemned and rejected by all.”
On January 27, 2023, on the evening of the Jewish Sabbath, Palestinian terrorist Alqam Khayri opened fire on Jewish civilians in the Neve Yaakov neighborhood of Jerusalem. Khayri killed seven people and wounded three before he was shot and killed by the police.
On June 1, 2023, Fadel tweeted: “Excellent thread that explains in detail the absurdity of the charge of hate speech against Fatima Mohammed. The fanaticism of #Zionists is matched only by their desperation to suppress truth…”
On December 17, 2022, Fadel tweeted: “According to these #Zionist groups, the religious sanctity of #Israel for some #Jews should immunise it from criticism for #ethniccleansing #occupation #landtheft and #apartheid.”
On December 10, 2022, Fadel tweeted: “For #Zionists the #Nakba was just the ‘miraculous emptying of the land’. For people in the fact-based universe, it was #ethniccleansing and a #crimeagainsthumanity…”
The term “Nakba” is generally translated as “catastrophe” in Arabic, referring to the outcome of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It is a term used to delegitimize the creation of the State of Israel by drawing a comparison to the Holocaust, known in Hebrew as the Shoah, meaning “catastrophe.”
On December 24, 2021, Fadel tweeted: “#Zionist #justice is all about #justus. #ApartheidIsrael #ethniccleansing #occupation.”
Hatred of Israel
The keffiyeh is a Palestinian headdress traditionally worn by men, which has become a symbol of Palestinian nationalism.
Fadel’s post was in response to another post from Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO and national director of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), comparing a keffiyeh to a Nazi swastika.
On April 20, 2022, Fadel tweeted: “@POTUS How can you be the leader of the free world when you can't even stop #Israel from criminalizing human rights groups? #PalestineException #Genocide.”
On April 13, 2022, Fadel tweeted: “Fill in the blank: “I think it’s genocide because I think they’re trying to wipe out the idea of being _________.” A. Jewish B. Palestinian C. American @POTUS @SecBlinken #ApartheidIsrael.”
On April 12, 2022, Fadel tweeted: “If the #Zionist goal of an ethnic #Jewish state is legitimate, you are forced either to affirm the legitimacy of #apartheid or #ethniccleansing or both. #ApartheidIsrael #Nakba.”
On October 31, 2021, Fadel tweeted: “This very long thread about the #holocaust #colonialism and the politics of #Zionism in today’s #Germany must be read to understand the insidiousness of the #IHRA definition of #antisemitism…”
On July 4, 2021, Fadel tweeted: “#Zionism simply denies the existence of #Palestinians except as the product of a historical ‘mistake’ and accordingly, there is no injury to them if they are forced to live their lives elsewhere. Hence, they are always generic #Arabs.”
On June 20, 2021, Fadel tweeted: “...Canada, stop funding genocide in Palestine…”
On May 12, 2021, during OGW, Fadel tweeted: “The failure of liberals to challenge #Zionism in #Palestine has emboldened #whitesupremacy in liberal democracies.”
On the same date, Fadel tweeted: “...liberals should get over their cowardice on #Zionism and confront its ethno-religious chauvinism, not only because that's the right thing to do, but it is a requirement to defeat #whitesupremacy at home.”
On May 30, 2020, Fadel tweeted: “Where do US police train? #Israel exports its oppression of #Palestinians to the world, in #weapons, #surveillancetechnology #rhetoric (everything is #terrorism”) and just outright brutality. #BlackLivesMatter…#PalestinianLivesMatter #BDS.”
The accusation that Israeli law enforcement teaches American police brutal tactics during police exchange programs is used to demonize Israel. Participants in these programs have stated [00:02:14] that the training in Israel focuses [00:13:36] on public policy, counterterrorism and leadership training in the form of lectures and discussions.
On May 5, 2020, Fadel tweeted: “Apparently, the only way to avoid the label of #antisemitism is to support #apartheid #JewishSupremacy and the #ethniccleansing of #Palestinians….”
BDS
The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.
One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”
Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”
In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”
The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.
BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.
The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.
Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.
BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
