Danny Shaw’s Participation in the Pro-Hamas Encampment at Columbia University (Columbia), Support for Terrorism, Anti-Semitism and Hatred of Israel

Danny Shaw is a professor who expressed support for terrorism, spread anti-Semitism and promoted hatred of Israel during its war against Hamas terrorists in late 2023 and early 2024.

Danny Shaw participated in the pro-Hamas encampment at Columbia in April 2024.

Shaw was fired from his university teaching position for his anti-Israel activism in April 2024.

In February 2024, Shaw published an anti-Israel book titled: “This Is Genocide!: Forty-eight Poems for Gaza.”

Shaw wrote his remarks on social media after a series of Hamas terror atrocities and war crimes against Israeli civilians, including mass murder, torture, rape, beheadings and kidnappings, which were executed on October 7, 2023.

The Hamas terror attacks left over 1,200 Israelis dead, hundreds kidnapped and thousands wounded. Israel retaliated with a war called “Swords of Iron.”

Hamas is a designated terrorist organization founded in 1987 that is dedicated to destroying Israel and killing Jews. Since 2001, Hamas has launched thousands of rockets at Israel and on October 7, 2023, Hamas murdered approximately 1,200 Israelis and kidnapped over 200 hostages, including children and the elderly.

Support for Terrorism

On November 22, 2023, weeks after Hamas terrorists attacked Israel, Shaw posted on Instagram a picture of himself standing next to a photo of terrorist Leila Khaled holding a rifle. He wrote in the post: “Resistance is justified / when the people are occupied / The world knows who the real terrorists are / Long live #palestine🇵🇸 #gaza.”

Leila Khaled is a leading member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and participated in the hijacking of TWA Flight 840 in 1969 and El Al Flight 219 in 1970. As of 2017, Khaled was a member of PFLP's Political Bureau. Khaled has said that the second intifada failed because it was not violent enough, advocated [00:36:07] for the use of children in terror activities and compared Zionists to Nazis.

Anti-Israel activists use the term “resistance” to refer to violence and terror perpetrated against Israeli civilians and their allies. It is used to glorify and encourage anti-Israel and anti-Semitic violence. Anti-Israel activists chant slogans such as: “Resistance by any means necessary!” and “Resistance is justified when people are occupied!” in response to terror attacks.

On Saturday, October 7, 2023, approximately 2,900 heavily armed Hamas terrorists breached Israel’s border with Gaza. They executed numerous war crimes on civilians, including mass murder, beheadings of children, rape of men and women, torture, kidnappings and mutilation.

Hamas broadcast videos of their butchery on social media, often to victims’ accounts for families to see. Israel retaliated with a war called “Swords of Iron.” As of November 10, 2023, approximately 1,200 Israelis, the vast majority of them civilians, were murdered during the attacks. Hamas kidnapped 242 Israelis, including at least 30 children. At least 3,500 people were wounded, many severely.

A terrorist detained by Israel admitted he raped an Israeli woman when he broke into a kibbutz house during the October 7, 2023 attack. In March 2024, a former hostage of Hamas publicly stated she was sexually abused and tortured while in captivity.

Anti-Semitism and Hatred of Israel during a Hamas War

On October 14, 2023, Shaw tweeted: “...This is not a war against #Hamas; it is a war against the Palestinian homeland and their right to exist…”

On October 16, 2023, Shaw reportedly tweeted and later deleted a post that said: “These Zi^nists are straight Babylon swine. We need to protest their neighborhoods. Where is your humanity? Why are you racist arrogant bullies? You think you are better than others? Zionism is beyond a mental illness; it’s genocidal disease. #Israel #Gaza #Gaza_Genocide.”

Zionism is the belief that Jews have the right to self-determination in their own national home, and the right to develop their national culture. Zionism is a core part of the identity of most Jews.

On October 29, 2023, Shaw alleged in a tweet that CNN journalists “continue to interview #Israeli families about their October 7th tragedy and how horrible #Hamas is…I see nothing that would educate the #USA or world that #Gaza is experiencing a #holocaust…”

The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) highlights as one possible contemporary example of anti-Semitism: “Drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis.” The U.S. State Department adopted the IHRA’s working definition of anti-Semitism in 2016. Over 40 countries have adopted the definition as well.

On November 13, 2023, Shaw tweeted: “This 🇺🇸🇮🇱violence never had anything to do with #Hamas; this is about the 75-year displacement and genocide of a native people. #Gaza_Genocide.”

The modern State of Israel was founded 76 years earlier, in 1948.

On December 14, 2023, Shaw tweeted about Zionists, claiming: “...These are the most insecure, blood-curdling colonizers on earth. They are duping the American and Israeli populace who root on this h o l * c a us t. Imagine if the K8k8k [KKK] or the n*z.is [Nazis] banned even the use of their name? How does that make it tougher to decode for humanity what is actually playing out behind the Israeli iron curtain of de*th?”

On January 1, 2024, Shaw tweeted: “To the Traffickers of Tears and Blood / Z ero respect for human life and decency / I ncinerator of imaginations / O stracized cultivators of soulless desert holocausts / N eighborless Heartless Loveless / I nsistent of exclusion over community / S ucking the blood out of the native / T ormented by his own twisted lies and genocide.”

In February 2024, Shaw published an anti-Israel book titled: “This Is Genocide!: Forty-eight Poems for Gaza.”

The publisher’s description of the book said it was “a cry of indignation against the extermination campaign the world is watching play out in what is left of Palestine. The poet asks why are we — the underdog, the oppressed, the occupied, the colonized, the Global Palestinian Family and the vast global majority — on the defensive when recent history and the truth is clearly anti-Zionist?”

The book description further read: “Those new to the Palestinian liberation struggle as well as veterans of anti-colonial resistance are sure to take away a great deal from this poetic cri de coeur which seeks to blast through all forms of shadow banning, deplatforming and censorship and give voice to a nation that has been silenced for seventy-five years.”

Participation in the Pro-Hamas Encampment at Columbia

On April 25, 2024, Shaw posted a video from the encampment on TikTok and wrote: “Day #9 #Columbia #Gaza encampment 🇵🇸 What is colonial narcissism?”

Shaw said [00:00:22]: “So it's been beautiful to be camped out here just learning and building and all Columbia alumni, all alumni across the country, sign those petitions. Do everything we can…”

Shaw then turned [00:00:54] his camera to film pro-Israel protesters opposite the encampment and said [00:00:58]: “Over here we have the counter-protesters trying to set up and that's the nature of Zionism. It's colonial narcissism.”

On April 17, 2024, Columbia students and anti-Israel activists set up a pro-Hamas “Gaza Solidarity Encampment” on the university's main lawn. Many participants were arrested and the encampment featured multiple violent incidents, including taking over a campus building and taking a university worker hostage.

Activists protested Israel’s war against Hamas and demanded that Columbia “divest from companies and institutions that profit from Israeli apartheid, genocide and occupation…”

The action had reportedly been planned for months and was organized by the Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD) coalition. The encampment was also organized by Columbia’s banned pro-Hamas activist group Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and the university chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP). Activists reportedly received training from National SJP and other anti-Israel organizations.
