Bikrum Gill

Overview

Bikrum Gill [Bikrum Singh Gill] is a professor who was arrested while participating in a pro-Hamas protest in April 2024 at Virginia Tech. Gill has expressed support for terrorism, spread hatred of Israel and Zionists and spoke at an anti-Israel protest.

Bikrum Gill’s activism occurred on and after October 7, 2023, following a series of Hamas terror attacks and war crimes against Israeli civilians, including mass murder, torture, rape, beheadings and kidnappings, which were executed on October 7, 2023.

The Hamas terror attacks left approximately 1,200 Israelis dead, hundreds kidnapped and thousands wounded. Israel retaliated with a war called “Swords of Iron.”

Hamas is a designated terrorist organization founded in 1987 that is dedicated to destroying Israel and killing Jews. Since 2001, Hamas has launched thousands of rockets at Israel and on October 7, 2023, Hamas murdered approximately 1,200 Israelis and kidnapped over 200 hostages, including children and the elderly.

As of November 2024, Gill was listed online as an assistant professor in the Department of Political Science at Virginia Tech (VT) in Blacksburg, Virginia, reportedly since Fall 2018.

Gill received a PhD in political science from York University (York) in 2016. York is located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

As of November 2024, Gill was listed as the Section Deputy Chair / Chair-Elect of the International Studies Association, for the term April 2024 through March 2025.

Arrest

On April 28, 2024, WDBJNews7.com reported that protesters occupying campus in violation of university policy were arrested for trespassing.

On May 2, 2024, WDBJNews7.com reported that Gill was one of five faculty arrested during an anti-Israel protest at VT. Gill reportedly said: “I think this movement is not going anywhere. I think we’ve seen across campuses that the more institutions try to repress this, the more it kind of grows.”

A video from the newscast showed Gill sitting [00:06:15] on the campus lawn behind a row of student protesters sitting with locked arms, and later being led away [00:07:16, 00:07:22] in handcuffs by police arresting protesters.

Support for Terrorism

On October 7, 2023, Gill posted on X: “Following the victory in Jenin in July, the Palestinian resistance today has shown again that it understands the fundamental question of decolonization. What is at stake is an overturning of the equation of force that enables Israel to terrorize Palestinians with impunity.”

On October 7, 2023, Hamas murdered approximately 1,200 Israelis, kidnapped hundreds and wounded thousands. War crimes included mass rape and torture. Israel retaliated with a war called “Swords of Iron.” For more information, see the Canary Mission page on Hamas.

In early July 2023, Israeli forces launched a two-day counterterrorism operation in the Jenin refugee camp. Its goal was to target terrorists and dismantle the terror infrastructure of organizations such as Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ). By the end of the operation, the Israeli army had reportedly dismantled “hundreds of explosives, weapons caches and underground tunnels.”

Among anti-Israel activists, the term “resistance” is a euphemism for terrorism and is used to glorify and encourage anti-Israel and anti-Semitic violence.

Also on October 7, 2023, Gill posted on X: “...the Palestinians have learned that liberation from Zionist colonialism and Western Imperialism necessitates an overturning of the material equation of force. This has been proven from the South of Lebanon in 2000, the 2006 summer war, 2014, 2021…”

Also on October 7, 2023,Gill posted on X: “So see now how Gaza responds to the heroic actions of the Jenin resistance this past summer. How the divided Palestinians materially unify the struggle against ethnic cleansing in the West Bank with the defense of Al-Aqsa and the end of the blockade in Gaza.”

The allegation that Jews “threaten” to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque has been a pretext for Arab attacks on Jews long before the existence of the modern Jewish state. Such propaganda has led to multiple periods of violence against Israeli civilians.

Israel and Egypt implemented a UN-approved [pp. 39–41] joint blockade of the Gaza Strip in 2011 to stop Hamas from acquiring more sophisticated rockets. Hamas went around the blockade by smuggling weaponry through tunnels under the Philadelphi corridor separating Gaza from Egypt.

On October 27, 2023, Gill posted on X: “Do not just condemn israeli and western barbarism on display tonight in Gaza. Stand with the Palestinian armed resistance as they valiantly defend their land and peoples in Gaza and the West Bank and all of historic Palestine…”

On November 9, 2023, Gill was a panelist with Nerdeen Kiswani and Charlotte Kates in a webinar titled: “From the River to the Sea: Palestinian Resistance and the Threat of Regional War.” The webinar was sponsored by the International Democratic Socialists of America and promoted as “a political education event about the Palestinian resistance to Zionist occupation, colonization, genocide…”

Zionism is the belief that Jews have the right to self-determination in their own national home, and the right to develop their national culture. Zionism is a core part of the identity of most Jews.

During the webinar, Gill said [01:17:49]: “It is the impunity…at the international scale that is enabling this systematic genocide. We must stand with the armed resistance…by disrupting the flow of weapons to Zionists…”

Hatred of Israel and Zionists

On October 7, 2023, Gill posted on X: “Look at how the entirety of the Western political class has shown, yet again, both its pathetic moral bankruptcy in condemning the Palestinian right to armed resistance, and its genocidal impulse in giving Israel carte blanche to restore its desired status quo.”

In October 2023, Gill was a signatory to an October 18, 2023 letter published by the Act Now To Stop War And End Racism (ANSWER) coalition, titled: “Open letter against intimidation at Harvard University: Defend the freedom to speak in support of Palestine!”

The letter read: “We stand together against the racist harassment and demonization of Pro-Palestine student activists at Harvard and elsewhere across the country. These attacks are designed to intimidate, weaken, and silence people's right to speak out in support of the Palestinian people's struggle against occupation and apartheid. “

On October 8, 2023, the Harvard Palestine Solidarity Committee (PSC) chapter released on Instagram a “Joint Statement by Harvard Palestine Solidarity Groups on the Situation in Palestine.”

The statement read: “We, the undersigned student organizations, hold the Israeli regime responsible for all unfolding violence.” The statement also claimed the atrocities “did not occur in a vacuum” and that “The coming days will require a firm stand against colonial retaliation.” The list of student groups that signed on to the statement was later removed following public outrage.

On November 20, 2023, Gill posted on X:  “Israel and its Western imperialist backers have created hell on earth in Gaza…The barbarity of a Western world order which authorizes Israel to commit such crimes.”

Anti-Israel Activism (SJP, DSA)

On October 20, 2023, The Roanoke Times published an article titled: “Protest in support of Palestinian cause held in Blacksburg.” The protest took place in the city, near the Virginia Tech campus, and was organized by Students for Peace and Justice in Palestine (SJPVTECH) and Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

The Roanoke Times reported: “The protesters were led in chants…with leaders shouting slogans like, ‘From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free…’”

“From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be Free” is a chant used [00:02:47] to call for the elimination of the State of Israel. It has also been employed by Hamas leader Khaled Mashal to call for the replacement of Israel with an Islamic state. In April 2024, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution condemning the chant as antisemitic.

The article included photos of protesters shouting slogans against Israel and included a photo of Gill with a megaphone speaking to the protesters.

The article reported that Gill said: “When people like [VT president] Sands, and like President Joe Biden refuse to mention Palestinians, they are speaking Palestine out of existence.”
