Beverly Bain

Beverly Bain, University of Toronto, spoke at the pro-Hamas student encampment at the University of Toronto (UofT) in May 2024

Beverly Bain is a professor who justified Hamas terrorist war crimes, spread hatred of Israel and engaged in anti-Israel activism. Bain also spoke at the pro-Hamas student encampment at the University of Toronto (UofT) in May 2024.

Bain’s late 2023 and early 2024 anti-Israel activity took place in the wake of Hamas terror atrocities and war crimes against Israeli civilians, including mass murder, torture, rape, beheadings and kidnappings, which were executed on October 7, 2023.

The Hamas terror attacks left over 1,200 Israelis dead, hundreds kidnapped and thousands wounded. Israel retaliated with a war called “Swords of Iron.”

In September 2020, Bain launched Scholars Strike Canada (SSC). The group describes itself as having “originated as a labour action in solidarity with Black Lives Matter, to protest anti-Black, anti-Indigenous, racist and colonial police brutality in the U.S., Canada and elsewhere.”

As of March 13, 2024, Bain was listed on the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) website as an assistant professor of “Historical Studies - Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies.”

Also as of March 13, 2024, Bain’s Facebook Home page said she had studied at York University (York) and UofT. Both schools are located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

As of the same date, Bain’s Facebook said she was located in Toronto.

Justifying Hamas Terrorist War Crimes

On October 7, 2023, the same day Hamas terrorists massacred 1,200 Israeli Jews, Bain tweeted a quote attributed to Marxist philosopher Franz Fanon.

Bain’s tweet said: “‘We revolt simply because for many reasons we can no longer breathe.’ Franz Fanon.Viva Palestina!”

On Saturday, October 7, 2023, approximately 2,900 heavily armed Hamas terrorists breached Israel’s border with Gaza. They executed numerous war crimes on civilians, including mass murder, beheadings of children, rape of men and women, torture, kidnappings and mutilation.

Hamas broadcast videos of their butchery on social media, often to victims’ accounts for families to see. Israel retaliated with a war called “Swords of Iron.” As of November 10, 2023, approximately 1,200 Israelis, the vast majority of them civilians, were murdered during the attacks. Hamas kidnapped 242 Israelis, including at least 30 children. At least 3,500 people were wounded, many severely.

A terrorist detained by Israel admitted he raped an Israeli woman when he broke into a kibbutz house during the October 7, 2023 attack. In March 2024, a former hostage of Hamas publicly stated she was sexually abused and tortured while in captivity.

For more information on the October 7, 2023 terror attacks, see the Canary Mission page on Hamas.

On October 9, 2023, Bain tweeted: “Olivia Chow shame on you for declaring that a protest in support of Palestine and the Palestinian people is not sanctioned. What are you going to do have the Chief of Police and his brutish squad arrest us all?”

On the same date, Toronto mayor Olivia Chow had tweeted a statement that said: “...The rally to support Hamas at Nathan Phillips Square today is unsanctioned, without a permit and I unequivocally denounce it. Glorifying this weekend’s indiscriminate violence, including murder and kidnapping of women and children, by Hamas against Israeli civilians is depolorable…”

The Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM) promoted the rally in a Facebook post, where they referred to the October 7, 2023 atrocities as “our heroic resistance in Gaza” and celebrated “over 30 Zionist hostages captured [and] the fall of settlements surrounding Gaza.” The post also said: “we remain steadfast in our right to resist by any means necessary,” and called on activists “to uplift and honour our resistance and our martyrs…and celebrate our steps closer to liberation!”

Anti-Israel activists use the term “resistance” to refer to violence and terror perpetrated against Israeli civilians and their allies. It is used to glorify and encourage anti-Israel and anti-Semitic violence. Anti-Israel activists chant slogans such as: “Resistance by any means necessary!” and “Resistance is justified when people are occupied!” in response to terror attacks.

Zionism is the belief that Jews have the right to self-determination in their own national home, and the right to develop their national culture. Zionism is a core part of the identity of most Jews.

In October 2023, during the week immediately following the Hamas terror attacks, Bain signed a statement titled: “Artists & Academics in Canada: Statement of Support for Palestine.”

The statement said: “We understand that the events of this week did not occur in a vacuum…The whole world understood in the case of Ukraine that resistance to military occupation is justified. It is in fact a right guaranteed by international law. The militant reaction from Palestinians in Gaza on October 7, 2023, is a result of decades of cruel and oppressive treatment.”

The statement also accused Israel of “brutal massacres and weapons testing” and “war crimes” in Gaza. It further said: “As artists, cultural workers, and academics, we stand strong in support of the Palestinian struggle for freedom and against all forms of racism and settler-colonial violence.”

In November 2023, Bain signed a statement by “scholars in feminist, queer, and trans studies who are rooted in social justice praxis” that accused Israel of “genocide” and said Gaza was “effectively an open-air prison.”

Referring to Gaza as an “open-air prison” is a way to delegitimize the UN-approved [pp. 39–41] joint Israeli-Egyptian blockade of the Gaza Strip imposed in 2011 to prevent Hamas from acquiring more sophisticated rockets. Following Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, the Israeli military discovered that Hamas went around the blockade by smuggling weaponry through tunnels under the Philadelphi corridor separating Gaza from Egypt.

The statement also said: “We are for the liberation and self-determination of colonized people, without exception. We believe that colonized people have the right to choose their means of resistance, within the boundaries of international law, without exception.”

Hamas is a designated terrorist organization founded in 1987 that is dedicated to destroying Israel and killing Jews. Since 2001, Hamas has launched thousands of rockets at Israel and on October 7, 2023, Hamas murdered approximately 1,200 Israelis and kidnapped over 200 hostages, including children and the elderly.

October 7, 2024, Bain posted on X: “Today October 7, is a day of commemoration, resistance and protests. We remember the thousands of women children and men killed by Israel in its genocide against Palestine. We stand with the resistance in Palestine and in Lebanon against the Israeli onslaught against 🇵🇸 and 🇱🇧✊🏾.”

Hatred of Israel

On June 21, 2025, Bain posted on X: “Let us be clear the warmongering white-ethnonationalists, zionists, f**kers led by [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanayu and facilitated by Trump has made themselves Sovereign’s and global overlords of the West and Middle East. We must rise up every where people! ✊🏿.”

On October 30, 2024, Bain posted on X: “The Israeli daily genocide of Palestinians, the genocide of Sudanese, Congolese, and attacks on Haitians and destruction of Haiti. The unbearable ongoing facilitation and conducting of this human carnage by Israel, US, Canada and western leaders. May they never know peace.”

On March 8, 2024, Bain tweeted: “On this IWD [International Women’s Day] let us remember and celebrate the women in Palestine…as they struggle against genocide and sexual violence. The women who are on the frontlines globally against zionism…”

On March 6, 2024, Bain tweeted: “Look we will make you miserable. You will loose [sic] sleep, anywhere you speak, gatherings to celebrate your friends in genocide we will be there. Demanding you stop the bombing, the slaughter, the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. You will know no peace.”

On February 11, 2024, Bain tweeted: “Israel bombing Rafa as it conducts its media campaign of victim hood [sic] at the Super Bowl! By the way that performer Usher supports Zionist Israel. I refuse to watch any of that s**t tonight!”

In February 2024, Israel launched an advertising campaign for the Super Bowl weekend in order to raise awareness of the over 130 Israeli hostages still held captive by Hamas at that time.

On December 7, 2023, Bain was featured in a webinar organized by SSC, titled: “Feminist Voices: In Solidarity with Palestinian Women in Gaza.”

During the webinar, Bain accused [01:15:09] Israel of “[raining] bombs down on Palestinian civilians, homes and hospitals, killing with such vengeance and rage with intent to wipe the Palestinian people off the face of the earth.”

On October 17, 2023, the terror group Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) fired rockets at Israel from Gaza, one of which misfired and fell on the parking lot of the al-Ahli Arab Baptist Hospital. Initial media reports blamed Israel. Following the incident, U.S. Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib immediately accused the Biden administration of funding Israel’s “genocide” of Palestinian people.

On December 6, 2023, Bain tweeted: “...Israel war is also gendered and misogynist and is particularly aimed at Palestinian women, queers and trans in the Gaza.”

On November 12, 2023, Bain posted on Facebook: “Israel genocidal war cannot be condoned. Israel is not protecting itself it is cleansing the Gaza ofPalestinians and will repopulate with Israeli settlers…”

On October 14, 2023, Bain tweeted a statement she published for SSC titled: “Scholar Strike Canada Strongly Condemns Canadian University Administrators and the Western media for their ongoing Threats against Scholars and Students in Solidarity withPalestinian People in Gaza.”

The statement claimed: “For two decades, Israel has held Palestinians in Gaza under siege, in an open-air prison, subjecting them to brutal massacres and weapons testing.” The statement also claimed: “Western nations have condoned the Israeli government’s unrelenting punishment of women, men, children and gender diverse peoples.”

Anti-Israel Activism (BDS)

On December 4, 2023, Bain tweeted: “...Businesses run by Jews that support the occupation and the genocide of Palestinians and the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] will be boycotted.”

Bain signed an April 22, 2019 statement from Faculty for Palestine Canada (F4P) “in support of” the McGill University chapter of Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR McGill). SPHR is an alternative name for Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP).

In the statement, SPHR McGill demanded that McGill cancel a course that included a two-week exchange program at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

The F4P statement also said: “As strong supporters of the campaign for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel, we are appalled by the McGill University’s continued support for and engagement in exchanges with Israeli institutions…”

May 2024 - Speaking at the Pro-Hamas UofT Encampment

Bain spoke [slide 8] at an anti-Israel rally held at the UofT encampment on May 27, 2024.

On May 2, 2024, UofT Occupy for Palestine (Occupy UofT) activists “stormed down” fencing around UofT’s Kings College Circle and set up a pro-Hamas and pro-BDS encampment called the “People’s Circle for Palestine.” Protesters chanted [00:02:59] for “intifada” and celebrated “resistance” [00:02:45]. Both terms are calls for terrorism. Activists chanted [00:01:28; 00:02:21] for Israel’s destruction multiple times.

After the October 7, 2023 massacre of nearly 1,200 Israelis, the inverted red triangle🔻 - became a Hamas symbol. It appeared on large signs at the encampment and was featured in other encampment-related activism. Openly pro-Hamas marches began elsewhere in the city and ended at the encampment. In one incident, pro-Hamas activists punched a Jewish man, stole his Israeli flag and shouted anti-Semitic slurs.

Protesters occupied [00:00:17] the area from May to July 2024, despite UofT warning they were trespassing. On July 3, 2024, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice issued an injunction at UofT’s request, requiring the encampment to be cleared. Occupy UofT dismantled the encampment and wrote a statement that ended: “Long live the intifada.”

Bain also showed support for the encampment by signing on to a statement put out by UofT community members in May 2024 [row 26, photo 1]. The May 20, 2024 statement was in support of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

The statement backed all the encampment’s demands, including divesting from the alleged “apartheid policies of the state of Israel and its ongoing genocide in Gaza.”

To show support, Bain submitted a “support selfie,” which featured her holding a sign that said: “U OF T / DISCLOSE! / DIVEST! / CUT TIES! / NOW!”

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
