Thahiya Hassan

Overview

Thahiya Hassan has spread hatred of Zionists and Israel, promoted anti-Semitism online and participated in a violent anti-Israel riot at Columbia University (Columbia).

The incidents occurred in the wake of Hamas terror atrocities and war crimes against Israeli civilians, including mass murder, torture, rape, beheadings and kidnappings, which were executed on October 7, 2023. The attacks left over 1,200 Israelis dead, hundreds kidnapped and thousands wounded. Israel retaliated with a war called “Swords of Iron.” For more information, see the Canary Mission page on Hamas.

Hassan is a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

As of May 2024, Hassan’s LinkedIn profile said she was an undergraduate student at Barnard College (Barnard), part of Columbia. She was majoring in chemistry and was slated to graduate in 2025.

As of the same date, Hassan had the username “sh*i davidai shady facts” and the handle “@ziggynutsmcgee” on Twitter. Her username referred to pro-Israel Columbia professor Shai Davidai, a leading voice against anti-Semitism at Columbia.

Columbia is located in New York, New York.

Hatred of Zionists

On April 24, 2024, Hassan tweeted: “stay safe guys love u all. gonna knock out. z*onists suck my fat 8 inch c**k and choke.”

On April 19, 2024, Hassan tweeted: “oh shut the f**k up you genocidal zionist a**hole.”

Zionism is the belief that Jews have the right to self-determination in their own national home, and the right to develop their national culture.

Also on April 19, 2024, Hassan tweeted: “ok from now on i will stop engaging with zionists and just block them because there is no way of getting through their thick skulls with actual logic and morals.”

On March 27, 2024, Hassan tweeted: “james from big time rush count your f**king days you stupid zionist b**ch… z list celebrity trying so hard to stay relevant 😭.”

Hatred of Israel

On April 25, 2024, Hassan tweeted: “death to i*srael inshallah [God willing].”

On April 24, 2024, Hassan tweeted: “because israel has been a genocidal entity for the past 75 years, hope this helps!”

Hassan’s tweet was in response to a tweet that said: “...How did the Students for Justice for Palestine @Columbia knew about Hamas revolution AKA the Oct 7th massacre before it occurred?”

The modern State of Israel was founded 75 years earlier, in 1948.

On April 20, 2024, Hassan tweeted: “we love self awareness…” in response to a tweet that showed a video of a police officer mimicking the chant: “NYPD, KKK, IDF [Israel Defense Forces], we’re all the same. I get it.”

The accusation that Israeli law enforcement teaches American police brutal tactics during police exchange programs is used to demonize Israel. Participants in these programs have stated [00:02:14] that the training in Israel focuses [00:13:36] on public policy, counterterrorism and leadership training in the form of lectures and discussions.

On April 13, 2024, Hassan tweeted: “i have absolutely zero sympathy for i*srael right now… may they suffer the pain they inflicted on gaza for the past 75 years ten times over 🙏what goes around comes around i guess!”

Hassan’s tweet was referring to the April 14, 2024, Iranian missile attack on Israel, which took place during Israel’s war against Hamas. At the time of the missile attack, it was still April 13, 2024, in the United States.

On April 14, 2024, Iran fired “Over 350 ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, armed drones and rockets” toward Israel in an unprecedented attack. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and several international partners intercepted 99% of the projectiles. The IDF named the operation Iron Shield. The missile attack took place during Israel’s war against Hamas terrorists.

Iranian media claimed the attack was in retaliation for an alleged Israeli strike on an Iranian consular building in Damascus, Syria, earlier that month. The Damascus attack killed several members of designated terrorist organization Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), including a senior commander and a brigadier general.

On April 1, 2024, Hassan tweeted: “i f**king hate you israel.”

Anti-Semitism

Hassan retweeted an April 27, 2024 tweet that said: “zionists deserve no response except womp womp and a block. u dont educate nazis u [redacted] them.”

The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) highlights as one possible contemporary example of anti-Semitism: “Drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis.” The U.S. State Department adopted the IHRA’s working definition of anti-Semitism in 2016. Over 40 countries have adopted the definition as well.

On April 24, 2024, Hassan tweeted: “i trusted you” in response to a tweet from actor Mark Ruffalo that said: “Protest the War but do not advocate for violence against our Jewish brothers and sisters. There is no place for that in a peace movement…”

Participating in a Violent Anti-Israel Campus Riot

On April 30, 2024, Hassan tweeted that she participated in aiding the illegal and violent occupation of Columbia’s Hamilton Hall where protesters barricaded themselves in the building. She wrote that “they had me help move the tables to barricade hamilton hall.”

On the same date, Hassan tweeted: “i am so scared for the people in hamilton right now… nypd [New York Police Department] you will pay.”

Hassan also indicated in other tweets that she participated in the “Gaza Solidarity Encampment” on campus.

On April 17, 2024, Columbia students and anti-Israel activists set up what they called the “Gaza Solidarity Encampment” on the university's main lawn. Participants protested Israel’s war against Hamas and demanded that Columbia “divest from companies and institutions that profit from Israeli apartheid, genocide and occupation…”

The action had reportedly been planned for months and was organized by the Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD) coalition, as well as Columbia’s banned pro-terror groups Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP). The Columbia activists reportedly consulted with and received training from National SJP and other anti-Israel organizations.

The encampment was forcibly dismantled at the directive of Columbia’s president and administration. The NYPD [New York Police Department] entered the area, cleared the encampment and arrested more than 100 students. They were also charged with trespassing and suspended from Columbia indefinitely.

Two days later, activists created a new encampment. When divestment negotiations with Columbia failed, protestors illegally forced their way into the university’s Hamilton Hall on April 30, 2024. They smashed [00:00:55] through a glass-paneled door, broke security cameras and threw university property out of the windows.

While barricading themselves in the building, agitators kept three Columbia custodians hostage and stopped them from leaving. When the NYPD raided and dismantled the encampment a second time, they arrested more than 100 students, nearly half of whom were reportedly not affiliated with Columbia.

NYPD shared on Twitter photos of objects the police found in Hamilton Hall. These included knives, hammers, gas masks, ropes and a pamphlet that read [video 1]: “...DISRUPT/RECLAIM/DESTROY zionist business interests everywhere! DEATH TO ISRAELI REAL STATE! DEATH TO AMERICA!...LONG LIVE THE INTIFADA!” The term “Intifada” is Arabic for uprising or insurrection, and carries the connotation of violence.

The Columbia encampment reportedly inspired a wave of protest encampments across North American campuses, where pro-Israel students were blocked or restricted from campus facilities. Jewish students were reportedly harassed in several other ways. Some were told [00:00:02] to “go back to Poland” and [slide 3]: “Yahoodim [Jews], yahoodi [Jew], f**k you!” as they walked from campus to their dorm rooms.

Hassan retweeted an April 22, 2024 tweet that said: “It's an incredible grift, being a Zionist on a college campus. To have every institutional power at school and in your society coddle you, bend to your will, and excuse you of all wrongdoing...”

On April 19, 2024, Hassan tweeted: “i know the zionists at columbia are SEETHING at the level of solidarity shown this week. they may have the money, the nypd, and the admin backing them up, but they will NEVER have the people, and that’s worth a thousand times more than anything they could retaliate with.”

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
