Sufian Nabhan

Overview

Sufian Nabhan [Sufyan Nabhan] has spread anti-Israel conspiracy theories and promoted the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) leader Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi.

As of December 2018, Nabhan was a national board member of American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) and served as its Michigan chapter president. He helped found AMP in 2006.

As of November 2000, Nabhan served on the board of the Islamic Association for Palestine (IAP), which has been tied to the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) and Hamas. IAP has been defunct since 2004.

As of December 2018, Nabhan served as the president of the Islamic Center of Detroit (ICD), which he founded in 1999. Nabhan was also listed as the Vice President of the American Arab & Muslim Political Action Committee (AAMPC) and a board member of the American Midwest Leadership Council (AMLC).

As of the same date, Nabhan’s LinkedIn page said he was the President and CEO of Global Link Group LLC, an international telecommunications company in Dearborn Heights, Michigan.

His LinkedIn page also said he received an executive master’s degree in Business Administration in 2017 from the Jack Welch Management Institute (JWMI) and a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Spring Arbor University (SAU) in 2013.

Spreading Anti-Israel Conspiracy Theories

Nabhan retweeted an October 8, 2015 tweet from al-Qaradawi that included the hashtags “#الانتفاضة_انطلقت #انتفاضة_الأقصى [#Intifada_Launched #Intifada_AlAqsa].”

In October 2015, there was an upsurge in violence across Israel incited by Palestinian political and religious leaders. The wave of stabbings, known as the “Knife Intifada,” was characterized by young Palestinians throughout the country stabbing and attempting to stab Israeli civilians. The attacks were incited by Palestinian leaders propagating the libel that Israel intended to desecrate the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.

Nabhan retweeted a February 19, 2015 tweet promoting the claim that ISIS leader Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi was actually an Israeli Jew, named Simon Elliot.

The original tweet contained a montage of photos and text reading: “An Israeli Jew, Simon Elliot, Mossad agent and leader of ISIS.” The image text went on to claim: “The devil is a Zionist Jew and lives in Israel. Boycott Israel and save lives. Boycott Israel made products. Boycott Zionist Jewish businesses.”

On February 21, 2015, Nabhan tweeted an article alleging that the U.S. and Israel are behind ISIS. The article had a graphic of an ISIS fighter with “JSIL” and “CIA” tattoos, ripping off a mask that resembled Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.

The hashtag “#JSIL” means “Jewish State in the Levant” and is used as a way of comparing Israel to the Islamic State (ISIS), also known as the Islamic State in the Levant (ISIL).

On April 21, 2016, Nabhan tweeted a graphic claiming that Israel and ISIS share many things in common, including “using religion as an excuse” for “terrorising indigenous inhabitants” and of being an “illegally created ‘state’” that was “funded by the West.”

On July 26, 2017, Nabhan tweeted a graphic for an AMP rally at the Dearborn Centennial Library, that read “AL-AQSA OF JERUSALEM IN GRAVE DANGER - DEFEND AL-AQSA NOW! STOP ISRAELI TAKEOVER!”

On July 14, 2017, terrorists murdered two Israeli police officers outside the entrance to the Al-Aqsa compound, reportedly following claims that the Al-Aqsa Mosque was in danger. In response to the terror attack, Israel installed metal detectors and security cameras at the entrance to the holy site, which the authorities later removed, after further rioting and escalation in violence.

Promoting MB Leader Yusuf Al-Qaradawi

On November 17, 2016, Sabhan referred to Yusuf al-Qaradawi in a tweet as “ شيخنا الفاضل [our honorable Shaikh].”

Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi is the president of the European Council for Fatwa and Research. The Wall Street Journal reported that the council has used the anti-Semitic Protocols of the Elders of Zion as a basis for some of its legal-theological deliberations.

In a January 9, 2009 sermon shown on Al-Jazeera, Qaradawi prayed: "O Allah, take this oppressive, tyrannical band of people. O Allah, take this oppressive, Jewish Zionist band of people. O Allah, do not spare a single one of them. O Allah, count their numbers, and kill them, down to the very last one."

Nabhan retweeted a December 7, 2017 tweet from al-Qaradawi in protest of U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and to relocate the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Nabhan retweeted an August 21, 2016 tweet from al-Qaradawi that said: “ينبغي ألا تنسى الشعوب العربية والإسلامية وهي في خضم معاركها لنيل حريتها وكرامتها، أن قضية الأمة الأولى هي فلسطين والقدس الشريف.”

The tweet said in English: “Arab and Islamic nations should never forget, while they’re in the middle of their war to achieve their freedoms and dignity, that the nation’s first issue is Palestine and the honorable Jerusalem.”

AMP

American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) was founded by UC Berkeley Professor Hatem Bazian as a vehicle to generate mainstream support in the United States for the Palestinian national cause.

On its website, the organization lists Bazian as the chairman of its national board and describes itself as “a national education and grassroots-based organization, dedicated to educating the American public about Palestine and its rich cultural, historical and religious heritage.”

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has accused AMP of promoting “extreme anti-Israel views and has at times provided a platform for anti-Semitism under the guise of educating Americans” about Palestinians. The ADL further stated that AMP is directly involved in campus-based anti-Israel activity through Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP).

Prior to founding the AMP in 2006, Dr. Bazian created SJP together with fellow UC Berkeley Professor Snehal Shingavi in 2001. The close working relationship between AMP and SJP has been documented several times over the years by several organizations, including NGO Monitor and StandWithUs

In addition to providing financial, public relations and legal assistance to SJP, AMP has also been accused of having connections to Hamas. The AMP national board includes former members of both the Islamic Association of Palestine (IAP) and Holy Land Foundation (HLF), both of which were found liable for aiding and abetting Hamas. The IAP was founded by Mousa Mohammed Abu Marzook, a senior member of Hamas.
