Saja Hussein

Overview

Saja Hussein has demonized Israel and expressed support for anti-Israel politicians. Hussein served as the 2019 treasurer for Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at the University of Florida (UF).

Hussein also attended the 2019 SJP National Conference.

National SJP held their conference at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities (UMN), from November 1-3, 2019. The conference was themed: “Beyond Struggle: From Roots to Branches Towards Liberation.”

As of December 2020, UF’s Gatorship social justice education program listed Hussein as an “Assistant Director.”

As of July 2020, UF’s student newspaper “The Tempest” listed Hussein as a “Staff Writer.”

In October 2019, Hussein was a sophomore at UF, reportedly majoring in Political Science.

Demonizing Israel

On July 10, 2020, Hussein tweeted: “lmao this is why you can’t be both zionist and pro-palestine. Zionism means a Jewish state for the Jewish people, which by definition means that Palestinians cannot have the same benefits. It’s an ideology with apartheid written into its very name, and zionists know that.”

Hussein was responding to a tweet by former U.S. Ambassador to the State of Israel. Daniel Shapiro, which defended Zionism and “the sovereignty in their homeland that the Jewish people deserve ...”

Zionism is the belief that Jews have the right to self-determination in their own national home, and the right to develop their national culture.

On November 24, 2019, Hussein tweeted: “thank ur SJPs for being radical bc everytime we stir the pot on campus it shows who yo racist genocide enabling friends are. it’s spring cleaning szn in this bi**h.”

On May 19, 2019, Hussein tweeted: “can y’all believe there’s been decades of injustice, blatant human rights violations, and a war criminal currently sitting as the prime minister but Madonna rly thinks she solved the conflict in Palestine bc u got a second of Palestinian flag screentime on her stage at Eurovision.”

In May 2019, Madonna performed at Eurovision in Israel.

On February 5, 2019, Hussein tweeted: “Nobody’s out here in 2019 acting like Palestine is some perfect state. Literally, nobody. People are just calling attention out to the blatant war crimes and humanitarian violations and incessant impunity Israel has. This got the same energy as ‘but black on black crime!-’😞

Supporting Anti-Israel Politicians

On December 13, 2019, Hussein tweeted: “brown twitter collectively coming to protect jeremy corbyn at all costs is an unexpected, but appreciated, development of 2019 im glad we’re finishing the year strong.”

Approximately 50 members of Jeremy Corbyn’s party were quietly suspended from the party due to their anti-Semitic comments exposed on social media.

In 2012 Corbyn invited Sheikh Raed Salah, leader of the extreme wing of the Islamic Movement in Israel, to Parliament and described Salah as "a very honored citizen."

Salah's record included endorsingthe conspiracy theory that was started by Syria’s government-owned newspaper, Al Thawra, about Jews being warned not to come to work at the Twin Towers on September 11. In a 2007 sermon, Salah also repeated the medieval European blood libel that Jews use the blood of gentile children to make matzah, for Passover.

In another incident, Corbyn stated he looked forward to hosting "our friends from Hezbollah" at an event at Parliament, and described that group and Hamas as being “dedicated toward bringing long-term peace in the entire region.”

Although he eventually expressed regret for those statements — during an investigation on anti-Semitism in his party in July of 2016 — Corbyn went on to back-handedly compare Israel’s government to ISIS.

In October 2020, Corbyn was suspended from the Labour Party after he downplayed a report that found the party “did not do enough to prevent anti-Semitism and, at worst, could be seen to accept it".

On August 16, 2019, Hussein tweeted: “today is so sad. seeing what happened to @RepRashidais such a real fear for Palestinians speaking up against the occupation abroad. we know that it could be us next. we who have had ancestral homes destroyed and stayed resilient still find moments like this incredibly trying.”

Rashida Tlaib was elected to the U.S. Congress in November 2018. She has advocated for a one-state solution, endorsed the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement and called for reduced foreign aid to Israel. In July 2019, Tlaib co-sponsored a pro-BDS bill in the U.S. Congress introduced by Rep. Ilhan Omar.

On March 4, 2019, Hussein tweeted: “I find it hilarious that lawmakers and citizens alike are calling @IlhanMN prejudiced when she and @RashidaTlaib are, in fact, the only ones NOT showing bias in the discussion on America’s foreign policy relationship with Israel. They’re just the ones who did their homework.”

Ilhan Omar was elected to the U.S. Congress in 2018. In February 2019, top Congressional leaders denounced Omar for tweeting anti-Semitic remarks.

On February 27, 2019, Ilhan Omar suggested that Israel supporters were disloyal to America. She said: “I want to talk about the political influence in this country that says it is OK for people to push for allegiance to a foreign country.” After the incident, the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee described Omar’s comments as a “vile anti-Semitic slur” and “unacceptable and deeply offensive.”

Anti-Israel Activism

On November 22, 2019, Hussein tweeted: “so so proud of my school and SJP for continuing to kick a** and kill it everyday! zionists take note: we are tired of the propaganda and bulls**t.” Hussein linked to a UF SJP video of anti-Israel activists disrupting a pro-Israel event on November 20, 2019.

On November 27, 2019, Hussein tweeted: “Any false equivalency of anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism acquiesces to more human rights violations under a corrupt regime and government. I talked about just ~some~ of those violations occurring last week for the Alligator:”

Hussein linked to an op-ed she authored in the UF student newspaper, The Alligator. In her article, Hussein detailed how UF SJP organized “a vigil and walkout during an event featuring former Israel Defense Forces (IDF) sergeant Yoni Michanie” on the UF campus.

Hussein also condemned Israel’s treatment of violent agitators in Gaza during the 2018 “great March of Return,” and alleged that “over 400 Gazans have been murdered while protesting for a better future for their children.”She also condemned Seargant Michanie’s referring “to Hamas and the Palestinian struggle as ‘Islamic Jihad.”

On March 30, 2018, some 30,000 Palestinians in Gaza approached Israel’s border to take part in “Land Day Protests” or the “March of Return.” The violent demonstrations were instigated by Hamas on the Israeli-Gaza border. Participants declared their intention to harm Jews across the border under the pretext of “peaceful resistance.”

March participants sent scores of kites bearing explosive devices across Israel’s border to burn Israeli crops and homes. Rioters also made numerous attempts to breach Israel’s border fence, which caused the Israeli Defense Forces to respond with live fire.

Agitators also threw Molotov cocktails, firebombs, shot firearms and threw rocks under the cover of smoke from burning tires.

The violent riots during the “March of Return” continued into 2019 and included armed protesters using gunfire, penetrating Israeli territory, launching incendiary kites into Israel and throwing IEDs, hand grenades and Molotov cocktails. Some of the attacks were carried out by Hamas operatives.

On October 17, 2019, Hussein helped organize [00:01:11] a UF SJP “Palestine 101: A Teach in” panel event.

The event description claimed that most people lack the “knowledge on the truth of the illegal occupation due to impartial media outlets and pervasive propaganda.”

During the teach-in, UF SJP President Laila Fakhouryas well as [01:46:25] event panelists labeled Israel [00:20:48] a settler colonialist and [00:57:07] “apartheid” state, likening [00:31:59] Israel to apartheid South-Africa. Panelists also promoted [00:31:06] the BDS movement

Attending the 2019 National SJP Conference

On November 3, 2019, UF SJP posted a photo featuring Hussein and UF SJP activiststo Twitter, and added: “RT @SJPUF: UF SJP is learning lots @NationalSJP, and we’re giving back by teaching other SJPs the gator chomp!”

The 2019 National SJP Conference was held at the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities (UMN), from November 1-3. The Conference themes centered on support for BDS as well as the rejection of Israel and Zionism.

The Conference partnered with numerous anti-Israel organizations and conducted their event in a clandestine manner.

2019 National SJP - Supporting BDS

The Conference website called to capitalize on shifts in the political climate, represented by the elections to the U.S. Congress of Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, who both support BDS. National SJP speakers also reportedly drew attention to Rep. Omar’s support for the BDS movement as the Representative for UMN’s Congressional district.

During the Conference, National SJP speakers reportedly “noted the success of past divestment campaigns at the University [UMN], which ultimately resulted in the passing of a campus-wide [BDS] referendum in 2018.”

The UMN resolution passed in 2018 by a margin of 3.4 percent of those students who voted, translating to approval by 6.18% of all eligible voters. Less than 13% of the eligible voters actually voted on UMN’s BDS referendum.

2019 National SJP - Rejecting Israel and Zionism

The 2019 National SJP Conference website indicated that the goal of their “solidarity movement” was to push for policies that “demanded the end of” the state of Israel, referred to as “the Israeli occupation.”

The website clarified that “the Palestinian struggle against Zionism, extends beyond the confines of 1967, and well before the Nakba,” and was based on the rejection of Jewish national self-determination in Israel.

Nakba is an Arabic term for “catastrophe” and refers to the outcome of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It is a term often used to delegitimize the creation of the State of Israel.

2019 National SJP - Heightened Secrecy

The 2019 National SJP Conference required attendees to be “verified and vouched for” by an SJP chapter to which they belonged and required each chapter to register as a group. The conference also required each group to be verified by a “reference––someone who is NOT going to this conference but who is or has recently been a part of your SJP.”

Members of allied student groups could register only as part of an SJP chapter delegation which, in turn, needed to be “vouched for by their campus’s SJP” for “security culture and accountability reasons.”

The Conference also restricted media access to journalists “registered and confirmed by our Media Committee in advance to attend the conference. Absolutely no exceptions will be made.”

During the Conference, National SJPreportedly covered the windows of the conference hall.

2019 National SJP - Partnering Organizations

National SJP partnered with other anti-Israel organizations to table, sell merchandise and lead workshops, including CODEPINK, Palestine Youth Movement (PYM), Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), US Palestinian Community Network (USPCN), Palestine Legal, Watan Palestine and the Adalah Justice Project.

Keynote speakers included Loubna Qutami, Chair of PYM, as well as Taher Herzallah of American Muslims for Palestine (AMP). Other speakers included Miko Peled, Sandra Tamari, Suhad Katib, Chris Gazaleh, Clarissa Bitar, Tariq Luthun, Maytha Alhassen and Sima Shakhsari.

SJP

SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.

The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.

SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.

SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.

SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.

Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.
