Razan Samara
Overview
Razan Samara has spread hatred of Israel and engaged in anti-Israel activism. Samara is a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement. In 2019, Samara was affiliated with Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR) at McMaster University (McMaster) in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. SPHR is an alternative name for Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP).
In 2020, Samar was affiliated [00:03:12] with the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM) chapter in Toronto, Ontario.
Samara won a 2022-2023 academic-year fellowship sponsored by the anti-Israel group Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME).
As of August 2023, Samara’s LinkedIn profile said she graduated from McMaster with a bachelor’s degree in life science in 2020. Her LinkedIn also said she was studying for a master’s degree in adult education and community development at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto (U of T), due to graduate in August 2023.
As of the same date, Samara’s LinkedIn said she had been a program coordinator at the Syrian Canadian Foundation since June 2020, and a freelance “Storytelling and Art Workshop Facilitator” since August 2018.
As of August 2023, Samara’s LinkedIn said she was located in Mississauga, Ontario.
Hatred of Israel
In May 2021, Samara signed an anti-Israel letter in the wake of Israel’s Operation Guardian of the Walls (OGW) against terror groups in Gaza. The letter accused Israel of “the random destruction of residential buildings, hospitals, schools, and infrastructure” in Gaza, claiming they were “war crimes.” The letter also accused Israel of “apartheid and settler colonialism with the aim of ethnic cleansing.”
In May 2021, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorists fired over 4,300 rockets from Gaza at major population centers in Israel. Israel responded by launching OGW, carrying out targeted military strikes in Gaza.
The letter that Samara signed expressed support for BDS and urged the Canadian government “to impose military and economic sanctions on Israel.” The letter also urged Canadian art organizations and institutions “to end any form of collaboration with Israeli state-financed and sponsored art and cultural activities with Israel.”
Anti-Israel Activism (BDS)
On July 4, 2020, Samara photographed the “DAY of RAGE - No to Annexation Rally” organized by Toronto BDS Network and other anti-Israel groups. In the spring of 2020, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israeli sovereignty would be applied to certain areas of the West Bank. The annexation plan was canceled a day before the July 1, 2020 deadline.
The Facebook event description said: “Please come out to support this Palestinian and youth-led demonstration of rage and rejection…WE ARE OUTRAGED AT ZIONIST COLONIAL EXPANSION AND VIOLENCE…WE MUST TAKE LEADERSHIP IN OUR NATIONAL LIBERATION. WE WILL RETURN.” The event was promoted with a photo of a Palestinian using a slingshot.
The “right of return” is a Palestinian demand discredited as a means to eliminate Israel. International law mandates no absolute right of return and UN Resolution 194, which defined principles for “refugees wishing to return to their homes,” was unanimously rejected by Arab nations following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
Toronto BDS Network also posted slides on Instagram listing the demands of the protest that included [slide 2] “placing sanctions onto Israel,” calling to [slide 3] “dismantle the West Bank apartheid wall” and demanding [slide 4] “the end of the ‘Deadly Exchange.’”
Israel’s security barrier, 97 percent of which is a low chain-link barrier, was built as a deterrent to Palestinian terror attacks. The concrete portions of the fence were built in response to Palestinian sniper attacks.
In 2017, anti-Israel group Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) launched the “Deadly Exchange (DX)” campaign, which accused American Jewish organizations of promoting human rights abuses. JVP also released a video that blamed [00:04:04] U.S.-based Jewish organizations for violence that occurs against Black and Brown communities, immigrants and activists in the U.S.
Samara’s photos from the protest included signs held at the protest that accused [slide 3] the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) of “colonial genocide” and said Israel was funding “ethnic cleansing, extrajudicial killings, the violation of minors.” Another sign Samara photographed said [slide 6]: “from the RIVER to the SEA PALESTINE will be FREE.”
“From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be Free,” is a chant used [00:02:52] to call for the elimination of the State of Israel.
On July 6, 2020, Samara’s podcast Instagram page posted a photo of her taking photos at the July 4, 2020 protest, with the caption: “So you wanna protest? Keep an eye out for this week’s (hopefully) helpful upload on a very pertinent and relevant topic!
#protest #justice #blm #bds #freepalestine.”On a July 7, 2020 Instagram podcast recorded on July 4, 2020, the day of the “No to Annexation” rally, Samara said [00:00:38] she would be attending and volunteering [00:05:43] there. Samara also said [00:03:12] the rally was co-organized by “the BDS movement for Toronto” and PYM.
PYM supports and has glorified terrorists, promotes incitement to violence and spreads anti-Israel conspiracy theories. PYM also advocates for the dissolution of the State of Israel, supports BDS, demonizes Israel, supports anti-Israel agitators and praises violent protesters.
In the video, Samara also warned [00:07:15] protest attendees to be prepared because there would be “Zionists and white supremacists” counterprotesting.
Zionism is the belief that Jews have the right to self-determination in their own national home, and the right to develop their national culture.
SJP
SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.
The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.
SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.
SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.
SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.
Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.
BDS
The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.
One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”
Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”
In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”
The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.
BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.
The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.
Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.
BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
