Randa Serhan

Randa Serhan [Randa B. Serhan] is a Columbia professor who participated in the pro-Hamas encampment at Columbia in April 2024.

On April 22, 2024, Randa Serhan, along with other Columbia faculty members, participated [00:00:39] in the “FACULTY WALK OUT FOR PALESTINE AT COLUMBIA.” The event was held in support of the students arrested by the New York Police Department (NYPD) and suspended by the university. Serhan can be seen [00:00:39] wearing a red sweater with black pants and holding a sign that said: “END STUDENT SUSPENSIONS NOW.”

Faculty members carrying signs with the same slogan and “HANDS OFF OUR STUDENTS,” walked out of their classrooms and made their way to the steps of the library facing the encampment. A crowd gathered and chanted: “Disclose! Divest! We will not stop, we will not rest!” A few walkout participants addressed [00:00:14] the crowd expressing faculty support for their students and the encampment.

Serhan also participated [photo 2] in an anti-Israel ceremony organized by “The People’s Grad for Palestine” on May 16, 2024.

The event, titled: “The People’s Graduation,” was planned by “an independent group of faculty [who] wanted to create a graduation ceremony for their students who have been excluded from campus for peacefully protesting Israel’s genocide in Gaza [at the Columbia encampment].”

The ceremony was organized “following the cancellation of [Columbia’s] University wide Commencement ceremonies and in the aftermath of the April 18 and April 30 police sweeps of the ‘Gaza Solidarity Encampment’ and occupied Hamilton [Hall].”

The encampment was also in support of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Columbia is located in New York, New York.
