Noelle Awadallah

Overview

Noelle Awadallah has defended terrorists, glorified violent protests and promoted hatred of Israel. Awadallah was an activist with Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at Columbia College - Chicago in 2016, and performed at the 2019 National SJP Conference.

National SJP held their conference at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities (UMN), from November 1-3, 2019. The conference was themed: “Beyond Struggle: From Roots to Branches Towards Liberation.”

Awadallah has also participated in anti-Israel performance art, promoted anti-Israel agitators and is a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanction (BDS) movement.

In May 2018, Awadallah posted photos of herself wearing a graduation cap and gown to her Instagram, and added: “I graduated college today with a bfa in dance.” She also received a teaching and research residency at Diyar Theatre in Bethlehem in 2019.

In November 2020, Awadallah began a Hinge Arts Residency program with Springboard for the Arts in Twin Cities, MN, working on a solo dance performance titled “Say You are a Stone.”

Ananya Dance Theatre indicated that Awadallah was an “Apprentice” and “Assistant Stage Manager” since 2019, in Minneapolis, MN.

Defending Terrorists

On May 17, 2017, Awadallah posted to Instagram: ”30 days #dignitystrike” and added a poster calling for “Freedom for the prisoners of the Palestinian people in the jails of the occupation.” The poster also said, in Arabic: “their hunger strike is the compass of the resistance.”

Terrorist Marwan Barghouti was sentenced to five consecutive life terms for some of his crimes, including his role in the Sbarro Cafe bombing. In 2017, he initiated the hunger strike by Palestinian prisoners known as the “Dignity Strike.” He headed the Palestinian Authority (PA) terrorist Tanzim force and founded the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, which carried out many terror attacks against Israeli civilians.

On April 23, 2017, Awadallah posted to Instagram: “‘12’ performed at Mess House For Ahmad Manasrah, 14 years old and sentenced to israeli prison for 12 years.” She added: “In honor of Ahmad, my Dad, and the 1500 prisoners on hunger strike.”

Ahmed Manasra (sometimes spelled Mansara) and his 15-year-old cousin Hassan went on a stabbing spree in Jerusalem on October 12, 2015, during the Knife Intifada. They critically wounded a 13-year-old boy and moderately wounded a 25-year-old man. The spree ended when police shot Hassan and a passing motorist hit Ahmed. Ahmed was taken to an Israeli hospital. He admitted to investigators: “I went there to stab Jews.” He was later tried and convicted on two counts of attempted murder.

Awadallah also alleged: “Palestinian children are routinely subject to torture and abuse under interrogation, solitary confinement during interrogation, beating and kicking by occupation military personnel, threats of sexual assault and other forms of abuse.”

Glorifying Violent Protests

On May 14, 2018, Awadalla posted to Instagram: “We will return #nakba70 #greatreturnmarch #jerusalemispalestine #f**kisrael #occupiersalwayslose.”

In May 2018, terror group Hamas instigated violent riots on the Israeli-Gaza border. Thousands of rioters attempted to breach Israel’s border fence, declaring their intention to harm Jews across the border under the pretext of “peaceful resistance.”

On May 16, 2018, Awadallah posted to Instagram a graphic titled: “Soweto 1976 - Gaza 2018.” The graphic paired an iconicphoto of dying 13-year-old Hector Pieterson, a mortally wounded black child, taken during the Soweto uprising, with a photo of a protestor injured on May 14, 2018, during the violent “March of Return.”

The graphic suggested an equivalence between the Soweto uprising whose organizers emphasized “good discipline and peaceful action” and the violent [00:00:21] March of return.

On May 16, 2018, a Hamas senior official, Salah al-Bardawil, stated that 50 out of 62 protesters killed during the May 14 Gaza border protest were Hamas operatives. Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) also claimed that three of its members were killed at the same protest.

Hatred of Israel

On June 25, 2018, Awadallah posted to Instagram: “Visited the former women's prison today from apartheid South Africa. Honored to have met the brave and beautiful Cecilie Palmer, Joyce Dipale, and pictured Lilian Keagile who were all imprisoned for their fight. Pieced together many of their stories with our women in Palestine, continuously finding connections and through lines 🌿.”

On June 3, 2017, Awadallah shared to Instagram a cartoon by Carlos Latuff, published in Mondoweiss, which characterized Israeli Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot as “Apartheid Woman.” The graphic portrayed Gadot being struck down by an elderly “Mother Palestine,” above the Dome of The Rock, as a Palestinian Arab cheered and a religious Jew fired at her with an M-16 rifle.

Text in the cartoon read: “Apartheid Woman versus Mother Palestine” along with a stamp, reading: “Approved by the BDS Movement.”

Carlos Latuff is a Brazilian political cartoonist who has equated Israel and America with Nazi Germany and promoted violence. In 2006, he won second prize at Iran’s “International Holocaust Cartoon Competition,” for a cartoon that compared Israel’s security barrier to Nazi concentration camps.

Anti-Israel Performance Art

On October 21, 2020, Awadallah helped created and performed in the film “GREEN: An Uprising, An Intifada,” produced by her sister, Leila Awadallah, in collaboration with their brother Jamal Awadallah.

Since the early 2000s, the term “intifada,” which translates from Arabic as “uprising” or “insurrection,” has carried the connotation of violence.

The second intifada (2000-2005) was characterized by more than 120 suicide bombings targeting Israeli civilians on buses and in cafes.

The film description on Vimeo stated: “We learn that this administration / American empire will continue funding and supporting the illegal apartheid on indigenous Palestinian land.”

The film description also stated “We learn that Minneapolis police participate in training on stolen Palestinian land that equates innocent civilians to terrorist” and linked anti-Israel websites as resources, including Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and the anti-Israel news site Electronic Intifada (EI), described as “Palestine Grassroots News Source.”

In 2017, JVP launched the “Deadly Exchange (DX)” campaign, which accused American Jewish organizations of promoting human rights abuses. JVP also released a video that blamed [00:04:04] U.S.-based Jewish organizations for violence that occurs against Black and Brown communities, immigrants and activists in the U.S.

On August 1, 2020, Awadallah published to her Vimeo page a dance film that she performed in, titled: “Reflection on Stolen Land and Bodies attacked by the state.” The film was produced by Awadalla’s sister, Leila.

Promoting Anti-Israel Agitators

On December 20, 2017, Awadallah posted to Instagram a photograph of anti-Israel agitator Ahed Tamimi harassing [00:00:08] Israeli soldiers. Awadallah commented: “#AhedTamimi long live our fierce girls long live our women long live Palestine.”

Ahed Tamimi has a long history of physically attacking Israeli soldiers. Tamimi is the daughter of Bassem Tamimi, who is known for exploiting young children as political props in staged confrontations with Israeli soldiers.

On March 28, 2017, Awadallah posted to Instagram: “‘In memory of Rachel Corrie’ Joanna Kadi” and added a selection of Kadi’s writing about the fall of apartheid South Africa, as well as Guatamala’s and India’s freedom movements.

RCF was created to honor the memory of Rachel Corrie, a former International Solidarity Movement (ISM) member who was accidentally killed while interfering with an Israeli military operation in 2003 during the Second Intifada. A wrongful death suit brought by Corrie’s family was dismissed when the judge ruled that Corrie unreasonably chose to put her own life in danger.

Supporting BDS

On December 30, 2018, Awadallah posted a photo of herself to Facebook with a frame featuring an illustration of “Handala” and the hashtag #RightToBoycott, in reference to the BDS movement.

Handala is a cartoon representing a demand known as the Palestinian “right of return” to Israel. The “right of return” is a demand discredited as a means to eliminate Israel.

Performing at National SJP 2019

On November 2, 2019, Awadallah featured in a video posted to Clarissa Bitar’s Instagram story, performing a dance at the 2019 National SJP Conference.

On that same day, Awadalla also appeared in a video posted to Instagram stories by her brother, Jamal Awadallah, performing a dance at the Conference.

The 2019 National SJP Conference was held at the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities (UMN), from November 1-3. The Conference themes centered on support for BDS as well as the rejection of Israel and Zionism.

The Conference partnered with numerous anti-Israel organizations and conducted their event in a clandestine manner.

2019 National SJP - Supporting BDS

The Conference website called to capitalize on shifts in the political climate, represented by the elections to the U.S. Congress of Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, who both support BDS. National SJP speakers also reportedly drew attention to Rep. Omar’s support for the BDS movement as the Representative for UMN’s Congressional district.

During the Conference, National SJP speakers reportedly “noted the success of past divestment campaigns at the University [UMN], which ultimately resulted in the passing of a campus-wide [BDS] referendum in 2018.”

The UMN resolution passed in 2018 by a margin of 3.4 percent of those students who voted, translating to approval by 6.18% of all eligible voters. Less than 13% of the eligible voters actually voted on UMN’s BDS referendum.

2019 National SJP - Rejecting Israel and Zionism

The 2019 National SJP Conference website indicated that the goal of their “solidarity movement” was to push for policies that “demanded the end of” the state of Israel, referred to as “the Israeli occupation.”

The website clarified that “the Palestinian struggle against Zionism, extends beyond the confines of 1967, and well before the Nakba,” and was based on the rejection of Jewish national self-determination in Israel.

Nakba is an Arabic term for “catastrophe” and refers to the outcome of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It is a term often used to delegitimize the creation of the State of Israel.

2019 National SJP - Heightened Secrecy

The 2019 National SJP Conference required attendees to be “verified and vouched for” by an SJP chapter to which they belonged and required each chapter to register as a group. The conference also required each group to be verified by a “reference––someone who is NOT going to this conference but who is or has recently been a part of your SJP.”

Members of allied student groups could register only as part of an SJP chapter delegation which, in turn, needed to be “vouched for by their campus’s SJP” for “security culture and accountability reasons.”

The Conference also restricted media access to journalists “registered and confirmed by our Media Committee in advance to attend the conference. Absolutely no exceptions will be made.”

During the Conference, National SJPreportedly covered the windows of the conference hall.

2019 National SJP - Partnering Organizations

National SJP partnered with other anti-Israel organizations to table, sell merchandise and lead workshops, including CODEPINK, Palestine Youth Movement (PYM), Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), US Palestinian Community Network (USPCN), Palestine Legal, Watan Palestine and the Adalah Justice Project.

Keynote speakers included Loubna Qutami, Chair of PYM, as well as Taher Herzallah of American Muslims for Palestine (AMP). Other speakers included Miko Peled, Sandra Tamari, Suhad Katib, Chris Gazaleh, Clarissa Bitar, Tariq Luthun, Maytha Alhassen and Sima Shakhsari.

SJP

SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.

The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.

SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.

SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.

SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.

Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
