Motamed Ikhmayes

Overview

Motamed Ikhmayes [Motamed Nihad Ikhmayes] has spread hatred of Israel at protests in New York City. Ikhmayes joined a violent mob that attacked diners at a restaurant on May 20, 2021, which was the same day Ikhmayes joined other anti-Israel activists at a violent counterprotest.

Ikhmayes has participated in anti-Israel chanting at rallies organized by Within Our Lifetime (WOL), an activist group in New York City founded by Nerdeen Kiswani. Until February 2018, WOL was known as the city’s chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), using the name NYC SJP

WOL’s “Points of Unity” states [point 3]: “We defend the right of Palestinians as colonized people to resist the zionist occupation by any means necessary.”

As of May 2022, Ikhmayes’s Facebook page said he lived in Staten Island, New York. However, he graduated from high school in Brooklyn, New York, in 2020.

As of February 2023, Ikhmayes used the handle “@litty_moe_” on Instagram.

May 20 - 21, 2021 - Violent Protest

Ikhmayes participated [00:40:34] in a counterprotest against a pro-Israel rally in Times Square on May 20, 2021. The counterprotest turned violent and later that evening, Ikhmayes joined [00:00:11] a mob that physically attacked diners in a Manhattan restaurant.

During the counterprotest, Ikhmayes wore a white t-shirt and a black and white keffiyeh hung like a harness across his neck and tied behind his back. He also wore a backward dark blue Yankees baseball cap.

During the rally, as police were deployed, Ikhmayes stood [00:01:16] near two other anti-Israel activists who threatened [00:01:26] an Orthodox Jewish man.

One of the activists, who wore a black t-shirt, stood in front of the Jewish man and yelled: “ugly, ugly, f**k outta here!” The second activist, who wore a red t-shirt, threatened [00:01:32] the Jewish man: “F**kin’ b**ch! F**k you up! I’ll f**k you up!”

As a police officer escorted the Jewish man away, Ikhmayes followed and yelled [00:01:37] at the Jewish man to “get the f**k outta here!”

In other video footage from that day, Ikhmayes waved [00:32:58] a Palestinian flag and raised his middle finger while he yelled “f**k you!” at Israel supporters. He also yelled [00:39:37] “p**sies!” at Israel supporters. Other anti-Israel activists chanted [00:40:34]: “Nazis! Nazis!”

Ikhmayes was also among [00:01:35] the anti-Israel activists who pushed [00:01:33] and eventually breached [00:35:22] a barricade set up by police to separate the pro-Israel rally from the violent counterprotesters.

Ikhmayes then joined [00:35:34] the mob that crossed over the barrier. The mob chanted anti-Israel slogans, yelled at the pro-Israel side and stole Israeli flags from some of the pro-Israel activists.

Ikhmayes ran [00:05:16]with other anti-Israel activists back [00:37:54] to their side of the barrier. After repeated throwing of projectiles by the anti-Israel activists, the police removed the barrier, declared that the “assembly is unlawful” and demanded the crowd disperse or face charges.

The police proceeded to arrest several anti-Israel activists while others, including [00:03:48] Ikhmayes, fled the scene.

The anti-Israel activists also threw garbage bags into the street in an attempt to create obstacles to law enforcement following after them on bicycles. Earlier, chairs and traffic barriers were thrown into the street while large concrete planters had been overturned.

Ikhmayes was among [00:00:11] the same anti-Israel activists who later went on to harass and physically attack diners in a restaurant, some spitting [00:00:05] at the customers while they were sitting and eating at their table.

Another group of anti-Israel activists that day launched [00:00:01] fireworks from a car at passersby in Manhattan's heavily-Jewish Diamond District, burning one person.

As police and passersby tended [00:00:34] to the injured person lying on the ground, more anti-Israel activists drove [00:00:19] by, shouting from their car windows, while others on the street pushed [00:00:37] people and yelled [00:00:48]: “F**k the Zionists, f**k you!”

During the counterprotest, a mob of anti-Israel activists attacked, beat up and reportedly yelled anti-Semitic slurs at Joseph Borgen, a Jewish man who was on his way to the pro-Israel rally in Times Square. Police arrested the assailants, including two who were charged with assault as a hate crime, menacing as a hate crime and aggravated harassment as a hate crime.

More than two dozen were arrested during the day’s various incidents.

On May 21, 2021, WOL posted two Instagram posts that offered legal support and advice to anyone arrested. The two WOL posts portrayed the assailants as victims.

The counterprotest took place during Israel’s Operation Guardian of the Walls (OGW) against Hamas.

In May 2021, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorists fired over 4,300 rockets from Gaza at major population centers in Israel. Israel responded by launching OGW, carrying out targeted military strikes in Gaza.

May 18, 2021 - Emergency Rally for Palestine WOL Rally

Ikhmayes marched [00:40:29] with other anti-Israel activists at a WOL rally outside of the Israeli Embassy in New York on May 18, 2021, where he chanted [00:40:40]: “Gaza! Gaza! Don’t you cry! We will never let you die!”

Other anti-Israel activists at the rally also chanted[00:41:10]: “There is only one solution! Intifada, revolution!”

Since the early 2000s, the term “intifada,” which translates from Arabic as “uprising” or “insurrection,” has carried the connotation of violence.

On the same day, a mob of anti-Israel activists from the rally, led by Saadah Masoud, violently attacked two men, one of whom held an Israeli flag.

May 15, 2021 - Nakba Day WOL Rally

Ikhmayes participating in a May 15, 2021 WOL rally in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, where he chanted [00:01:07]: “Israel is a Terrorist state.”

WOL titled the rally: “NAKBA 73 DEFEND PALESTINE!”

The term “Nakba” is generally translated as “catastrophe” in Arabic, referring to the outcome of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It is a term often used to delegitimize the creation of the State of Israel by defining it as a catastrophe.

The rally was also during Israel’s OGW against Hamas. WOL’s Instagram post promoting the rally used the hashtags: “#Nakba73 #Nakba #SaveSheikhJarrah #Jerusalem #Alaqsa,” a reference to the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.

In May 2021, Palestinian violence erupted in anticipation of an Israel High Court ruling on eviction proceedings concerning over 70 Palestinian tenants illegally residing in Jewish-owned properties in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah.

Incitement surrounding Al-Aqsa and Sheikh Jarrah were leading factors in Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorists firing over 4,300 rockets from Gaza at Israeli population centers from May 10 to 21, 2021. In response to rocket attacks from Gaza, Israel launched “Operation Guardian of the Walls (OGW),” striking military targets in the terrorist-controlled enclave.

The allegation that Jews “threaten” to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque has been a pretext for Arab attacks on Jews long before the existence of the modern Jewish state. Such propaganda has led to multiple periods of violence against Israeli civilians.
