Mohammed William Shalalfeh Led a March to the Pro-Hamas Encampment at the University of Toronto (UofT) where he Spoke

Mohammed William Shalalfeh [Mohammed William Alshalalfeh] led a march to the pro-Hamas encampment at UofT in May 2024. During the march, he celebrated terrorism and called for Israel’s destruction. At the encampment, he promoted hatred of Israel. In other activism, he has spread anti-Semitism outside a synagogue, promoted incitement and expressed support for Hamas terrorism.
On May 11, 2024, Shalalfeh led [00:00:10] an anti-Israel protest march titled: “76 YEARS OF NAKBA / RESISTANCE UNTIL RETURN,” that joined the UofT encampment.
The term “Nakba” is generally translated as “catastrophe” in Arabic, referring to the outcome of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It is a term used to delegitimize the creation of the State of Israel by drawing a comparison to the Holocaust, known in Hebrew as the Shoah, meaning “catastrophe.”
Among anti-Israel activists, the term “resistance” is a euphemism for terrorism and is used to glorify and encourage anti-Israel and anti-Semitic violence.
During the march, Shalalfeh led protesters in chanting [00:00:27]: “From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free!”
“From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be Free,” is a chant used [00:02:52] to call for the elimination of the State of Israel.

At the protest, Shalalfeh spoke as a representative of PYM and said [00:10:30] “...We understand the responsibility bestowed upon us by our ancestors to continue to carry the torch of resistance!...We are carrying the torch that has been passed down to us from the great revolt of 1936 to…the first and second intifada…”
Over 400 Jews were murdered during the violent Arab Revolt of 1936–1939.
The term “intifada,” which translates from Arabic as “uprising” or “insurrection,” carries the connotation of violence. Palestinian intifadas waged against Israel have been marked since 1987 by hundreds of hijackings, shootings, stabbings, bombings and suicide missions.
Shalalfeh further said [00:11:54]: “...the only path towards ending the dispossession, the destruction and the death that Zionism represents is the path of armed resistance...” and continued [00:13:21]: “...the collapse of the Zionist entity will not come from one decisive blow but it will come through a million small cuts that are inflicted over the course of decades and from every direction…”

Zionism is the belief that Jews have the right to self-determination in their own national home, and the right to develop their national culture.
At the encampment, Shalalfeh announced [00:00:51]: “...we’re here obviously today to commemorate 76 years since the start of the Nakba, but this has transformed into a rally also to support these students…we urge you all to please keep an eye on these mediums so we can know and mobilize as soon as the students need us…”
On May 4, 2024, Shalalfeh led a “Workers United for Palestine” contingent at a Worker’s Day March, organized by PYM Toronto, Toronto4Palestine and Labour For Palestine Toronto. The march began at Toronto City Hall Square and ended at the UofT encampment.
Shalalfeh was also featured [00:01:18] in an Instagram video from the UofT encampment on May 18, 2024.
UofT is located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Protesters harassed Jewish students, blocked Jews from campus facilities and shouted anti-Semitic slogans. They occupied campus grounds, in many cases illegally, caused property damage, violently took over buildings, celebrated terrorism and promoted the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.
Activists set up encampments to oppose Israel’s right to wage war against the Hamas terror group following October 7, 2023, when Hamas murdered approximately 1,200 people, including 32 American and 8 Canadian citizens. Hamas also kidnapped 252 people, including 11 Americans and the bodies of 2 murdered Canadians. As of May 26, 2024, 125 hostages remained in Hamas captivity.
At the protest, Shalalfeh said [00:03:31]: “As you can see, you have Zionists lining up to defend genocide...they claim to be indigenous to the land and yet with this little sun they have, all these white people are burning up. Let’s laugh as these white people claim that they are indigenous to the land [of Israel]! Shame!”
Shalalfeh continued [00:09:15]: “...the world is seeing your white supremacy…the world stands with us, and Zionism will fall…”
At the same protest, Shalalfeh together with Nabil Jalbout, another anti-Israel activist, led [00:00:57] protesters in calling for “intifada” and chanting [00:03:00]: “Settlers, go back home, Palestine is our home!” and [00:05:01]: “Palestine is not for sale, Zionists go to hell!”
On April 6, 2024, Shalalfeh said [00:05:48] in a speech at the annual Al Quds Day rally in Toronto: “...As Canada, the U.S. and the U.K. states collaborate with Israel to keep the Arab and Muslim world under the boot of imperialism, the axis of resistance is more united and coordinated than ever…”
Shalalfeh continued [00:07:19] “...We are a part of a global intifada, which is united in its resistance against Zionism…and against Western imperialism…”
The Iranian government initiated International Quds Day in 1979, as an annual protest against Israel’s existence. The protest has historically been a platform for anti-Semitism.
On October 7, 2023, Hamas murdered approximately 1,200 Israelis, kidnapped hundreds and wounded thousands. War crimes included mass rape and torture. Israel retaliated with a war called “Swords of Iron.” For more information, see the Canary Mission page on Hamas.
Referring to Gaza as an "open-air prison" is a way to delegitimize the United Nations-approved [pp. 39–41] joint Israeli-Egyptian blockade of the Gaza Strip imposed in 2011 to prevent Hamas from acquiring more sophisticated rockets.
As of July 2024, Shalalfeh was an organizer with the Toronto chapter of the pro-terror activist group Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM) since at least 2021. He was a spokesperson for PYM in 2024.
As of January 2024, Shalalfeh was director of outreach at the Legal Centre for Palestine, which he co-founded in 2021.
Shalalfeh was affiliated with the Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR) chapter at McMaster University (McMaster SPHR) in 2020 and 2024. SPHR is an alternative name for Students For Justice In Palestine (SJP).
As of July 2024, Shalalfeh was the Community Engagement Coordinator at Hamilton Community Benefits Network, since December 2022.

Pro-Hamas Encampment at the University of Toronto
On May 2, 2024, activists from the UofT Occupy for Palestine (Occupy UofT) group “stormed down” [00:00:24] the fencing around UofT’s Kings College Circle and set up a pro-Hamas encampment, which they called the “People’s Circle for Palestine.”That day, Occupy UofT called on “community members to…help us defend our encampment” at an emergency rally in the evening. Protesters chanted [00:02:59] for “intifada” and celebrated “resistance” [00:02:45]. Both terms are calls for terrorism. The activists also chanted [00:01:28; 00:02:21] for Israel’s destruction multiple times.
One speaker, Nabil Jalbout, said [00:09:02]: “...we are not fighting for peace, we are fighting for liberation, because ‘peace’ is a white man's word.” Another speaker, Ahmad Jarrar Hajahmad, claimed [00:05:52]: “All these Israeli and Zionist entities fill all these politicians with money in their pockets…we already know who runs this system…”
Signs displayed at the encampment said: “LONG LIVE THE INTIFADA” and “LIBERATION FOR ALL REQUIRES RESISTANCE FROM ALL.”
On May 4, 2024, anti-Israel protesters at the encampment assaulted a Jewish man, punching him in the stomach as they forcibly took his Israeli flag. The attackers told the man [00:01:02]: “God bless the armed resistance,” and: “Go back to Europe!” They also reportedly called him “a “dirty Jew.”
Protesters “occupied” [00:00:17] the area from May to July 2024, despite UofT’s warning they were trespassing. The group said they would not leave until UofT divested from companies that “sustain Israeli apartheid, occupation and illegal settlement of Palestine” and terminated partnerships with Israeli academic institutions.
Following the October 7, 2023 massacre of nearly 1,200 Israelis, the inverted red triangle -
- became a Hamas symbol. This symbol appeared on large signs at the encampment multiple times. Erin Mackey, one of the primary organizers, is openly pro-Hamas, having used the symbol in her activism. In addition, pro-Hamas marches that began in other parts of the city concluded at the encampment.

Occupy UofT dismantled the encampment and wrote [slides 5-6]: “We are just getting started…come fall, every incoming student will hear our message loud and clear…Whatever institution you have access to and influence over - you need to take this campaign there!” The statement concluded: “Long live the intifada.”
Background on Pro-Hamas Encampments
The encampment was one of over 140 pro-Hamas and anti-Israel college encampments set up in North America, and over 20 more globally, in the spring of 2024. The first began on April 17, 2024, at Columbia University. The encampments were unofficially known as the “student intifada,” borrowing a term associated with terrorist violence.Protesters harassed Jewish students, blocked Jews from campus facilities and shouted anti-Semitic slogans. They occupied campus grounds, in many cases illegally, caused property damage, violently took over buildings, celebrated terrorism and promoted the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Mohammed William Shalalfeh’s Anti-Semitism
On March 7, 2024, Shalalfeh led a protest, titled: “No Stolen Land Sales,” outside the Beth Avraham Yosef of Toronto (BAYT) synagogue in Thornhill, Ontario, which was holding an Israeli real estate expo.At the protest, Shalalfeh said [00:03:31]: “As you can see, you have Zionists lining up to defend genocide...they claim to be indigenous to the land and yet with this little sun they have, all these white people are burning up. Let’s laugh as these white people claim that they are indigenous to the land [of Israel]! Shame!”
One way anti-Israel activists spread anti-Semitism is by denying [00:17:45] Jewish history, with the aim of delegitimizing restored Jewish sovereignty, attacking Israel’s legitimacy and portraying Jews as foreign to the Land of Israel.
Mohammed William Shalalfeh’s Promoting Incitement
On October 12, 2021, Shalalfeh co-wrote an article, in which he accused Israel of “indiscriminate brutality, leading to the storming of Al Aqsa mosque…” in May 2021.On May 7-10, 2021, violent clashes broke out between Palestinian worshippers and Israeli police at the Al-Aqsa compound, following claims that Al-Aqsa Mosque was in danger. The allegation that Jews “threaten” to destroy Al-Aqsa has been a traditional pretext for Arab attacks on Jews long before the existence of the modern Jewish state.

He also claimed: “...The people of Gaza just did the worlds biggest prison break…”On October 7, 2023, Hamas murdered approximately 1,200 Israelis, kidnapped hundreds and wounded thousands. War crimes included mass rape and torture. Israel retaliated with a war called “Swords of Iron.” For more information, see the Canary Mission page on Hamas.
