Defending Violent Protests

On May 18, 2018, Ghazal shared a May 15, 2018 Facebook post which included a video featuring anti-Israel activist Noura Erakat portraying violent riots instigated by Hamas on the Israeli-Gaza border as the “largest civil protest" in the world. Erekat also accused [00:01:17] Israel of executing “children who are protesting."

In May 2018, terror group Hamas instigated violent riots on the Israeli-Gaza border. Thousands of rioters attempted to breach Israel’s border fence, declaring their intention to harm Jews across the border under the pretext of “peaceful resistance.”

On May 15, 2018, Ghazal shared a May 14, 2018 post on Facebook by the anti-Israel organization Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) that included another video featuring Erakat in which she alleged [00:01:36] the “lethal use of force against non-violent protesters who did not pose a threat to Israel.”

Media reports confirmed [00:00:20] the March of Return protesters’ breaches and attempted breaches of Israel’s border fence, some by armed Palestinians. One Hamas leader declared [00:00:30]: “We will take down the border [with Israel] and we will tear out their hearts from their bodies.”

In her Facebook post, Ghazal commented: “Acknowledge the terminology and language people are using when describing the incident in Jerusalem this week. Watch if you are confused about what is happening, how Palestinian's are being slaughtered daily, and Palestinian's basic human rights are continuously violated.”

March participants sent scores of kites bearing explosive devices across Israel’s border to burn Israeli crops and homes. Participants also attempted to breach the border fence, which caused the Israeli Defense Forces to respond with live fire. Agitators also threw Molotov cocktails and firebombs, shot firearms and threw rocks.

In their Facebook post, WOL listed the names of Palestinians killed in clashes with Israeli security forces, including Layla al-Ghandour.

On May 24, 2018, Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry said it removed eight-month-old Layla al-Ghandour’s name from a list of people killed by Israeli troops. The child reportedly died from tear-gas inhalation during the 2018 “March of Return,” though it was later revealed that the child had a pre-existing medical condition.

In June 2018, al-Ghandour’s cousin reportedly admitted that Hamas paid the family to claim the baby was killed by Israeli tear gas, rather than a fatal blood condition that runs in the family.

On July 19, 2018, Ghazal shared a NowThis post and video on Facebook of anti-Israel activist Linda Sarsour whitewashing [00:00:50] the March of Return.

Sarsour frequently uses the word “Zionist” as a pejorative and has tweeted that “nothing is creepier than Zionism.”

Demonizing Israel

On December 24, 2020, Ghazal tweeted: “F**k Israel.”

Ghazal retweeted a July 1, 2020 tweet by anti-Israel AJ+ journalist Dena Takruri that read: “Israel plans to annex parts of the occupied West Bank – but won’t give the Palestinians living there any civil rights. So will this further entrench the apartheid that already exist? Or lead to a one state solution? I explain.”

In the spring of 2020, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israeli sovereignty would be applied to certain areas of the West Bank. The annexation plan was canceled a day before the July 1, 2020 deadline.

AJ+ is a Qatari-funded propaganda media channel known for spreading misinformation and lies about Israel.

Ghazal retweeted an August 18, 2020 tweet that read: “It’s insane how the news of Israel bombing Gaza barely makes it to the newspapers. It’s so normalized and Palestinian lives are so dehumanized by the West that they don’t even believe it’s relevant news.”

Ghazal’s retweet came days after Israeli forces reportedly bombed Hamas targets in Gaza in response to arson balloons that Hamas-affiliated groups sent from Gaza into Israel, causing thousands of fires in Israeli farms and communities.

Ghazal retweeted a May 28, 2020 tweet that read: “The United States and Israel do not only share a common settler-colonial foundation, but also tactics and trainings used against Black communities in the US and against Palestinians living under occupation. #BlackLivesMatter✊🏽✊🏿✊🏻#FreePalestine.”

In 2017, JVP launched the “Deadly Exchange” campaign that accused American Jewish organizations of promoting human rights abuses.

JVP also released a video that blamed [00:04:04] U.S.-based Jewish organizations for violence that occurs against Black and Brown communities, immigrants and activists in the U.S."

The video accused mainstream Jewish organizations in the United States of coordinating exchange programs between American and Israeli security personnel, to advance “worst practices” and “racist policies.”

The campaign page claimed that these “policies” included: “extrajudicial executions, shoot-to-kill policies, police murders, racial profiling, massive spying and surveillance, deportation and detention.”

On July 20, 2018, Ghazal shared a July 18, 2018 NowThis post and video on Facebook of IfNotNow (INN) activist Elon Glickman participating in an INN-staged walk-off from a Birthright Israel trip.

Birthright Israel is a heritage trip to Israel for Jewish young adults from across the world.

In the video, Glickman likened [00:00:01] visiting Israel on Birthright to “going to the Jim Crow South during segregation.”

Spreading Hatred of Zionists

Ghazal retweeted a June 29, 2020 from anti-Israel poet Remi Kanazi that read: “Zionists be like ‘I know a spot’ and then steal your house.”

Poet Remi Kanazi is known for his aggressively anti-Israel spoken-word performances. He has supported terrorism and has compared Israel to both ISIS and the Ku Klux Klan.

Ghazal retweeted a June 27, 2020 tweet read: “zionists be like ‘i know a spot’ and then occupy all of palestine”

Ghazal retweeted a June 19, 2020 tweet that read: “I don’t understand how zionists are for BLM [Black Lives Matter] but can’t treat Palestinians like humans.....”

On January 18, 2020, Gazal tweeted referring to the 2020 DC Women’s March: “Reminder that @womensmarch has succumb to Zionism and Islamaphobia and doesn’t give a sh*t about Muslim or Arab women anymore and by extension, POC [person of color] women either.”

Promoting Anti-Israel Agitators

On December 20, 2017, Ghazal shared an AJ+ post and video on Facebook showing the arrest of Ahed Tamimi.

Ahed Tamimi has a long history of physically attacking Israeli soldiers. Tamimi is the daughter of Bassem Tamimi, who is known for exploiting young children as political props in staged confrontations with Israeli soldiers.

In her Facebook post, Ghazal commented: “And yeah the Israeli army has been doing this for years and the international community has continuously been brushing these Human Rights violations under the rug.”

Ghazal retweeted a December 18, 2019 tweet that was captioned: “That’s our sister @RashidaTlaib✊🏼✊🏼.” The tweet embedded a video of Tlaib speaking before the U.S.House of Representatives.

Rashida Tlaib was elected to the U.S. Congress in November 2018. She has advocated for a one-state solution, endorsed the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement and called for reduced foreign aid to Israel. In July 2019, Tlaib co-sponsored a pro-BDS bill in the U.S. Congress introduced by Rep. Ilhan Omar.

On February 13, 2019, Ghazal shared to Facebook a post and a video by Hasan Piker titled “Ilhan Omar Said NOTHING Wrong.”

Ilhan Omar was elected to the U.S. Congress in 2018. In February 2019, top Congressional leaders denounced Omar for tweeting anti-Semitic remarks.Omar has demonized Israel and endorsed BDS. In July 2019, Omar introduced a pro-BDS resolution in the U.S. Congress, which she described as “an opportunity for us to explain why it is we support…the BDS movement.”

In his Facebook post, Piker commented: “Freshman Congressperson and her statement about AIPAC’s influence over legislation is completely accurate. Just ask AIPAC.”

Piker also said [00:02:05] in the video that Omar’s comments were “a very normal statement to make about AIPAC and lobbying.”

Piker’s statement referred to a February 10, 2019 tweet by Omar, where she made explicit her earlier suggestions that AIPAC bribed American lawmakers.

The implication that AIPAC buys political support for Israel has been described as playing into “anti-Semitic tropes” that led to “centuries of stereotypes about Jews using money to control the world.”

Ghazal retweeted a June 7, 2020 tweet that read: “‘Palestine under Israeli occupation is the worst possible example of a carceral society.’ —Angela Davis”

Davis made the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitive List in 1970, after being charged as a principal in an aggravated kidnapping and first-degree murder of a judge.

Davis has advocated for BDS and accused Israel of apartheid and ethnic cleasing.

In 2015, David published a book, titled "Freedom is a Constant Struggle: Ferguson, Palestine and the Foundations of a Movement," in which she purported to reveal “the deep connections between the incarceration of Black Americans and the continued occupation of Palestine by the state of Israel."
SJP Activism

On February 25, 2020, Ghazal featured in a photo on SJP at Kalamazoo’s Instagram story, posing with fellow SJP activists “On the way to see Vivien Sansour!”

Vivien Sansour is a Palestinian seed activist and founder of the Palestine Heirloom Seed Library initiative.

On February 12, 2019, Ghazal promoted on Facebook an SJP fundraising event on campus.

On October 24, 2018, the KZOO student school newspaper, The Index, reported that Ghazal was “a new member of SJP.”

Attending the 2019 National SJP Conference

On November 4, 2019, Ghazal appeared in an SJP at Kalamazoo Instagram photo participating in the 2019 NSJP Conference.

On November 4, 2019, Ghazal appeared [slides 3 and 4] in an SJP at Kalamazoo Instagram photo at the 2019 NSJP Conference, leading a session titled “Activism in the Face of Anti-Palestinian Sentiment - The Case of Alex Odeh.”

On November 6, 2019, Ghazal posted a photo with fellow SJP at Kalamazoo activist, Luma Qashou, at the 2019 NSJP Conference.

The 2019 National SJP Conference was held at the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities (UMN), from November 1-3. The Conference themes centered on support for BDS as well as the rejection of Israel and Zionism.

The Conference partnered with numerous anti-Israel organizations and conducted their event in a clandestine manner.

2019 National SJP - Supporting BDS

The Conference website called to capitalize on shifts in the political climate, represented by the elections to the U.S. Congress of Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, who both support BDS. National SJP speakers also reportedly drew attention to Rep. Omar’s support for the BDS movement as the Representative for UMN’s Congressional district.

During the Conference, National SJP speakers reportedly “noted the success of past divestment campaigns at the University [UMN], which ultimately resulted in the passing of a campus-wide [BDS] referendum in 2018.”

The UMN resolution passed in 2018 by a margin of 3.4 percent of those students who voted, translating to approval by 6.18% of all eligible voters. Less than 13% of the eligible voters actually voted on UMN’s BDS referendum.

2019 National SJP - Rejecting Israel and Zionism

The 2019 National SJP Conference website indicated that the goal of their “solidarity movement” was to push for policies that “demanded the end of” the state of Israel, referred to as “the Israeli occupation.”

The website clarified that “the Palestinian struggle against Zionism, extends beyond the confines of 1967, and well before the Nakba,” and was based on the rejection of Jewish national self-determination in Israel.

Nakba is an Arabic term for “catastrophe” and refers to the outcome of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It is a term often used to delegitimize the creation of the State of Israel.

2019 National SJP - Heightened Secrecy

The 2019 National SJP Conference required attendees to be “verified and vouched for” by an SJP chapter to which they belonged and required each chapter to register as a group. The conference also required each group to be verified by a “reference––someone who is NOT going to this conference but who is or has recently been a part of your SJP.”

Members of allied student groups could register only as part of an SJP chapter delegation which, in turn, needed to be “vouched for by their campus’s SJP” for “security culture and accountability reasons.”

The Conference also restricted media access to journalists “registered and confirmed by our Media Committee in advance to attend the conference. Absolutely no exceptions will be made.”

During the Conference, National SJPreportedly covered the windows of the conference hall.

2019 National SJP - Partnering Organizations

National SJP partnered with other anti-Israel organizations to table, sell merchandise and lead workshops, including CODEPINK, Palestine Youth Movement (PYM), Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), US Palestinian Community Network (USPCN), Palestine Legal, Watan Palestine and the Adalah Justice Project.

Keynote speakers included Loubna Qutami, Chair of PYM, as well as Taher Herzallah of American Muslims for Palestine (AMP). Other speakers included Miko Peled, Sandra Tamari, Suhad Katib, Chris Gazaleh, Clarissa Bitar, Tariq Luthun, Maytha Alhassen and Sima Shakhsari.

SJP

SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.

The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.

SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Students Association (MSA) campus chapters.

SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.

SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.

Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.
