Layla Saliba’s Participation in the Pro-Hamas Encampment at Columbia University (Columbia), Support for Terrorists & Hatred of Israel and America

Layla Saliba has expressed support for terrorists and spread hatred of Israel and America. Saliba has also engaged in anti-Israel activism, including participating in an unsanctioned protest at Columbia in January 2024 where activists called for Israel’s destruction.

Layla Saliba also participated in the pro-Hamas encampment at Columbia in May 2024.

Saliba is a supporter of the Students for Justice for Palestine (SJP) chapter at Columbia (Columbia SJP), which expressed support for the Hamas terrorist war crimes of October 7, 2023, where they murdered 1,200 Israeli Jews. Israel retaliated with a war called “Swords of Iron,” which was going on when Saliba engaged in her activism.

Saliba wrote on her personal website, according to a tip submitted to Canary Mission in October 2024: “She’s also involved with CU Apartheid Divest (CUAD), a grassroots student led movement calling upon Columbia University to divest from companies that profit off the Israeli occupation and the ongoing oppression of the Palestinian people. Layla is involved with the CUAD research committee and the CUAD press team.”

Later, Saliba changed the text on her personal website to read: “She’s also involved with Columbia Palestine Solidarity Coalition (CPSC), a Palestinian student led coalition advocating for liberation of the Palestinian people.”

Saliba is a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

As of March 2024, Saliba’s LinkedIn profile said she was studying for a master’s degree in social work at Columbia, slated to graduate in 2025. Columbia is located in New York, New York.

As of the same date, Saliba’s LinkedIn said she graduated from North Carolina State University (NCSU) with a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2022.

Also as of March 2024, Saliba’s LinkedIn said she had been working as a private nanny and a babysitter for “high net worth families in New York City” since September 2022.

As of the same date, Saliba used the handle “@itslaylas” on Twitter and the handle “@itslaylas__” on Instagram.

Support for Terrorists

On January 25, 2024, Saliba tweeted in defense of Columbia SJP activists who showed support for terror attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea by Yemen’s Houthi terror group. At a rally on campus, the activists chanted [00:00:01]: “Yemen, Yemen makes us proud! Turn another ship around!”

Following the outbreak of Israel’s 2023 war against Hamas, Houthi terrorists attacked commercial ships off Yemen’s Red Sea coast and launched missiles into southern Israel. Like Hamas, the Houthi movement is backed by Iran, and is designated as a terror group by the United States, Saudi Arabia and other countries. The Houthi slogan translated into English reads: “God is the Greatest / Death to America / Death to Israel / A Curse Upon the Jews / Victory to Islam.”

In the same tweet, Saliba wrote: “have to tell my baba [father] that the official‘state of israel’ twitter account is subtweeting us *again* pls 😭.” Saliba’s tweet was in response to a tweet from an official account of the State of Israel condemning Columbia SJP.

Saliba retweeted a January 8, 2024 tweet that said: “If the Israelis are ‘allowed’ to blockade Gaza, why aren’t the Yemenis ‘allowed’ to blockade Israel?”

Israel and Egypt implemented a UN-approved [pp. 39–41] joint blockade of the Gaza Strip in 2011 to stop Hamas from acquiring more sophisticated rockets. Hamas went around the blockade by smuggling weaponry through tunnels under the Philadelphi corridor separating Gaza from Egypt.

Saliba retweeted a January 2, 2024 tweet that included a video in which a man referred [00:00:14] to Ghassan Kanafani as a “legendary Palestinian author and journalist,” calling [00:00:20] him a “genius…a beautiful fiction writer and a brilliant academic.”

Kanafani was a leading member and spokesperson for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) during the terrorist organization’s early years. Kanafani announced the PFLP’s responsibility for the Lod Airport Massacre of May 1972 and was linked to the airport attackers. The attack killed 26 people and wounded 80 others.

Hatred of Israel and America

Saliba retweeted a January 27, 2024 tweet that promoted a policy known as the “right of return.”

The “right of return” is a Palestinian demand discredited as a means to eliminate Israel. International law mandates no absolute right of return and UN Resolution 194, which defined principles for “refugees wishing to return to their homes,” was unanimously rejected by Arab nations following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.

The tweet that Saliba retweeted claimed: “UNRWA [United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East] was founded bc the UN condition to recognise ‘Israel’ after 1948 was to let Palestinian refugees return to Palestine. ‘Israel’ refused. So the world funded ‘relief & work for refugees.’ This money is not gratitude, but compensation owed by the West to Palestinians.”

The modern State of Israel was founded in 1948.

The United Nations Relief Works Agency (UNRWA) has hired Hamas members as teachers in its schools and provided arms to the terror group. Dozens of UNRWA staff participated in the October 7, 2023, Hamas terror attack on Israel, and many kept hostages for Hamas in their homes.

Saliba retweeted a February 9, 2024 tweet that said: “apartheid exists outside the West Bank and Gaza, too. In Haifa, in Jerusalem, in every town and city in ‘Israel proper’, a system of legal, semi-legal, and informal segregation...”

On January 3, 2024, Saliba tweeted, accusing Israel of committing “genocide” in Gaza during its war against Hamas terrorists.

Saliba also shared a poem she wrote that said: “‘America’ / They will bomb your homeland / Burn your olive trees to the ground / And claim to be the greatest nation in the world.”

Saliba retweeted a November 29, 2023 tweet that said: “The belief that Israel’s war crimes in Gaza and the West Bank today are a result of ‘the most extreme and far-right government in Israel’s history’ is a figment of the liberal imagination. Decades of colonial rule by Israel’s political left and centre belies this myth…”

On Saturday, October 7, 2023, approximately 2,900 heavily armed Hamas terrorists breached Israel’s border with Gaza. They executed numerous war crimes on civilians, including mass murder, beheadings of children, rape of men and women, torture, kidnappings and mutilation.

Hamas broadcast videos of their butchery on social media, often to victims’ accounts for families to see. Israel retaliated with a war called “Swords of Iron.” As of November 10, 2023, approximately 1,200 Israelis, the vast majority of them civilians, were murdered during the attacks. Hamas kidnapped 242 Israelis, including at least 30 children. At least 3,500 people were wounded, many severely.

A terrorist detained by Israel admitted he raped an Israeli woman when he broke into a kibbutz house during the October 7, 2023 attack. In March 2024, a former hostage of Hamas publicly stated she was sexually abused and tortured while in captivity.

For more information on the October 7, 2023 terror attacks, see the Canary Mission page on Hamas.

Hamas is a designated terrorist organization founded in 1987 that is dedicated to destroying Israel and killing Jews. Since 2001, Hamas has launched thousands of rockets at Israel and on October 7, 2023, Hamas murdered approximately 1,200 Israelis and kidnapped over 200 hostages, including children and the elderly.

Anti-Israel Activism (BDS)

On February 3, 2024, Saliba condemned Columbia’s suspension of Columbia SJP and the Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) chapter on campus (Columbia JVP). University administration suspended both groups for violating school policies.

On January 19, 2024, Saliba reportedly participated in an unsanctioned protest on the Columbia campus, where activists chanted: “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.”

“From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be Free” is a chant used [00:02:47] to call for the elimination of the State of Israel. It has also been employed by Hamas leader Khaled Mashal to call for the replacement of Israel with an Islamic state. In April 2024, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution condemning the chant as antisemitic.

On January 8, 2024, Saliba tweeted, promoting the “March on Washington for Gaza” demonstration in Washington, D.C., on January 13, 2024. The march was organized by several anti-Israel groups, including American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) and Muslim Student Association (MSA).

On January 2, 2024, Saliba tweeted: “teach in event about Vietnam and Palestine next Friday, Feb 9th at 5 PM!!...🕊️♥️.”

The event was organized by Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD), a pro-terror and anti-Israel coalition of campus groups in support of BDS.

On November 8, 2023,Saliba tweeted a picture from an anti-Israel protest and wrote: “sit in for palestine at columbia university school of social work!!”

Participation in the Pro-Hamas Encampment at Columbia

On May 1, 2024, Saliba was featured in an Instagram video participating in a press conference at the Columbia encampment. Saliba can be seen standing to the left of the speaker, wearing a black mask and a keffiyeh across her shoulders.

On April 17, 2024, Columbia students and anti-Israel activists set up a pro-Hamas “Gaza Solidarity Encampment” on the university's main lawn. Many participants were arrested and the encampment featured multiple violent incidents, including taking over a campus building and taking a university worker hostage.

Activists protested Israel’s war against Hamas and demanded that Columbia “divest from companies and institutions that profit from Israeli apartheid, genocide and occupation…”

The action had reportedly been planned for months and was organized by the Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD) coalition. The encampment was also organized by Columbia’s banned pro-Hamas activist group Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and the university chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP). Activists reportedly received training from National SJP and other anti-Israel organizations.

SJP

SJP is a student organization engaged in anti-Israel activity on North American college and university campuses.

The first chapter of SJP was founded in 2001 at the University of California at Berkeley by Professor Hatem Bazian. Bazian has spread classic anti-Semitism, reportedly promoted religious anti-Semitism and defended the Hamas terror group. In 2004, Bazian called for “intifada” in America.

SJP organizes anti-Israel campaigns, including running annual Israel Apartheid Weeks, often in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and Muslim Student Association (MSA) campus chapters.

SJP has been a major force in pushing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on campuses. Chapters have initiated dozens of BDS resolutions in student governments, which have been proposed on or around Jewish holidays, a time when many Jewish students are off-campus.

SJP activists have reportedly physically assaulted, intimidated and harassed Jewish students, disrupted pro-Israel campus events and demonized pro-Israel campus organizations.

Chapters have often endorsed and campaigned for numerous terrorists and whitewashed terrorism.

BDS

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded by Omar Barghouti in 2005 to challenge “international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism.” BDS is an allegedly “Palestinian-led movement,” although leading BDS activists have admitted [00:01:01] this is not true.

One of the demands of BDS includes [point 3] what is generally known as the “right of return,” a demand discredited as a way to eliminate Israel. Barghouti said the “right of return” is a means to “end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.”

Barghouti has said that BDS “aims to turn Israel into a pariah state, as South Africa once was.”

In his activism, Barghouti has also said [00:05:55] regarding Israel: “Definitely, most definitely, we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No…rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

The movement has been linked to numerous terrorist organizations and received a public endorsement from Hamas in 2017.

BDS initiatives include calling on institutions and individuals to divest from Israeli-affiliated companies, promoting academic and cultural boycotts of Israel, and organizing anti-Israel rallies, protests and campaigns.

The movement’s most notable achievement has been the infiltration of university campuses through lobbying for “BDS resolutions.” In these cases, student governments and student groups, backed by their own anti-Israel members and affiliates, have proposed resolutions on some form of boycott of, or divestment from, Israel and Israeli-affiliated entities.

Boycott resolutions, although non-binding, have been passed by student governments on numerous North American campuses.

BDS activity is often aggressive and disruptive. It has been noted that universities that pass BDS resolutions see a marked increase in anti-Semitic incidents on campus. On one campus, when the student government debated a BDS resolution, reports emerged of violent threats against those opposing it.
