Jumanah-Imad Albahri

Overview

Jumanah Imad Albahri was a member of the Muslim Student Associations (MSA) at the University of California San Diego (UCSD).

On May 10, 2010, while UCSD was hosting pro-Israel advocate David Horowitz, Albahri asked a question of the speaker. She noticed that the pamphlet she was given claimed correlations between the MSA and terrorist organizations like the Muslim Brotherhood.

In his response, Horowitz asked her to denounce Hamas, which Albahri would not, likening it to throwing herself "on the cross." Later, she invited Horowitz to "Hitler Youth Week" activities, mocking the name he had given to "Palestine Week" at UCSD.

He then asked if she was for or against the radical Islamist militant group Hezbolla's given desire for all Jews to gather in one place, making them easier to annihilate. She responded "For it."

Since that video was released four years ago, it has gone viral, with scores of views and articles both in support of and against Albahri. There was an instantly negative reaction once the video was released, with both Facebook groups and petitions to expel Albahri from UCSD for hate speech.

Soon after the event, Albahri created a blog where she gave a statement, as did her university's MSA chapter. Neither statement clearly negated what she had said. Her statement clarified her position, placed her as a victim and painted Horowitz as a bully.

Little is found of Albahri since the incident, either on the internet or social media.

Albahri is a graduate of the University of California San Diego (UCSD).

As of September 2018, Albahri’s LinkedIn said she an Interpreter at the International Rescue Committee in the greater San Diego Area. She has also been an Arabic and Islamic Studies Instructor at the Islamic Center of Eastlake School since October 2013.

MSA

The MSA was  established by members of the Muslim Brotherhood in January 1963 at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, with the goal of "spreading Islam as students in North America." A 2004 FBI investigation uncovered an internal Muslim Brotherhood document in which a brotherhood leader identified the MSA as "one of our organizations."

The MSA reportedly has “nearly 600 chapters” located in the United States and Canada, and is “the most visible and influential Islamic student organization in North America,” boasting conferences, special events, publications, websites and other activities.

The organization includes a number of previous chapter presidents with explicit links to terrorist groups. Included are al-Qaeda cleric Anwar al-Awlaki (Colorado State University), Somali al-Shabaab militant leader Omar Shafik Hammami (University of South Alabama) and Pakistani Taliban recruiter Ramy Zamzam of the MSA's Washington, D.C. council.

I condone Hamas in its struggle to free the 10,000 Palestinian men, women, and children unjustly locked away in Israeli prisons.”
“If I support Hamas, because your question forces me to condemn Hamas. If I support Hamas, I look really bad.”
